Woudnt Boris Johnson is a.... Count as a non Christmas song

I find the comments saying "disqualify old Christmas songs from the UK singles chart" ridiculous. The charts are meant as a measure pf what is the most popular tune in Britain in any given week - and not engineered to make a song look falsely popular to appease artists or fans of an artist.

And for a few weeks and especially the couple near Christmas that will be classic Christmas songs. People say its not fair on non seasonal songs but in that case don't release your song in those couple of weeks when Christmas songs proliferate in the charts. As an oldie myself the Christmas chart is the only one I look at these days and how the various Christmas songs do each year is interesting in itself. any fiddling with the chart to remove certain types of record would be the death knell for the charts as we've known them for the past nearly 70 years.

Where is the big selling track about our erstwhile prime minister? Even Relax and God Save The Queen where given their dues in chart placings if still banned from airplay. Controlling media in such a fashion smacks of something very dodgy indeed.

Dear Mr Aardvark, this chart is last weeks chart, representing last weeks sales. The song you mentioned was released this week and will feature in the chart released later today.

That song will be charting in this weeks chart on Friday. This chart is the last weeks which that song didnā€™t make to the top 100, Iā€™m not even sure if it was out at that point.

This year, as the chart is announced on Christmas Day, there's the potential for 2 Christmas No 1s!
Mariah Carey can already claim one of them.
If she can hold on to the top spot, she'll be Christmas No 1 all day, but if she's knocked off the top of the Christmas tree, the new No 1 will claim the other spot.
Merry Christmas!

This is incorrect. Spaces 2,3 and 4 in Amazon's best sellers are versions of "Boris Johnson Is A C***" bu The K*nts, but not a mention...

I wish the OCC would get their numbers right. Fairytale of New York should be 109 weeks on Top 100 and 98 weeks in Top 75. They have missed out the 1st re-issue in 1991 which charted for 5 weeks. If you going to be the Official Charts at least get your numbers correct!!!

Here's all the UK #1s of 2020 ranked from best to worst in my opinion. I'm not going to count All I Want For Christmas Is You because it's from the 90s and I'm not going to count the two charity songs we've already had this year as I think it would be a bit unfair to judge them purely as a song and we're probably going to have a charity song next week for the Christmas #1 so I won't include that either.

1) Blinding Lights
2) Head & Heart
3) Rain On Me
4) Mood
5) Roses
6) Own It

After all these years it really is a dream come true to see Mariah at No1. Maybe Wham next year? Interesting to see how many of the Christmas songs have dropped down the chart this week and just a few making modest rises. I wonder how much of this is due to more shops being closed and therefore not constantly streaming Christmas music all day?

I'm probably going to get a lot of backlash for this, but...

... this chart kind of proves why the rules introduced in 2017 donā€™t work.

Like, you ban all album bombs by all artists so that they can only have a maximum of three songs each in the chart, yet you allow like 60 Christmas songs to fill up the Top 100? Either let both of them happen, or neither of them happen, not just the one.

Iā€™m sorry, but for as much as I adore most Christmas songs, itā€™s just really unfair on artists who want to release their own music in December!

Maybe cap them to like the Top 20 or something? Then weā€™d still get the festive favourites each year, but itā€™d be much better for some newer or upcoming artists. :)

avatar

GS

3

I hate album bombs but 3 songs per artist is way too little. Maybe 6 or 7 per album.

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

2

well, i do adore christmas songs but they shouldnā€™t take up that much space. the three songs rule is nonsense. but hey, thatā€™s just how the charts work... (shrugs)

avatar

GS

3

I love the christmas songs filling up the chart, i would love the whole top 100 to be xmas songs

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I like said on the server earlier, you can't really make a fair comparison between Christmas songs to "normal" songs in December, since streaming playlists will obviously prioritise the former.

I've also said my piece many times on ACR too! :P

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, or again, only count the songs from an album bomb that would've made the Top 20 anyway & exclude all the others below #20.

That wouldn't have affected Taylor at all this week though! :P

P

PN

1

Probably cap them to arould 40 songs in the top 100 then I'd be happy

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, a Top 40 would work too, since we'd still get to see a bit more variety in the charts even then. :)

avatar

Cameron

4

I agree that the rules introduced in 2017 don't work but I don't see a problem with loads of Christmas songs being in the chart lol

avatar

Piran

0

I just think the Christmas songs flooding the charts aren't consistent with the rules that all other songs would be! I certainly love them being in the chart every December, but were the charts made to tell us that people listen to Christmas songs at Christmas? I don't think so, haha.

Oh well, I'm back home now, so I'm starting to feel a bit more festive tonight! :P

PK

Philip King

3

Agree and disagree...I agree with the album tracks, if the track has not been officially released as a SINGLE then it should not be allowed in the SINGLES chart. but disagree with limiting how many tracks per artist. If someone releases 10 singles in one week and they all sell enough to chart then all 10 deserve to be there or if someone has a previous singles still hanging in the charts that's fine too as long as they are selling enough to chart. Same as the Christmas stuff if has been released as a single and sells enough it has a right to chart.

avatar

Cameron

4

The charts are meant to show what people are listening to and right now people are listening to Christmas songs lol

avatar

Shadowcat222

0

Yes but you dont let one hit wonders go into the top 40^^

avatar

Piran

0

Ah. so your point is saying that it has to be released as an official single in order to chart... I kind of agree, due to the name of the chart, but what about if somebody puts out an album & there's a very clear fan favourite within that week? There's not really a lot of time to start promoting that, especially if some pre-released tracks will still be getting a lot radio airplay, but I do get your point to some extent. :)

avatar

Piran

2

I guess, but it just means that we get one month of the year where people who aren't releasing Christmas songs will find it almost impossible to chart! I don't want to see that... even if a rising star appeared with a credited Top 100 (hence the cap idea) that would still be good to see. :)

P

PN

2

If a cap isn't introduced, who knows, maybe one day the entire top 100 will be filled entirely of Christmas songs! XD

avatar

Cameron

3

Well the earliest that Christmas songs appear in the chart is around mid to late November and then they're out the chart by January so it's only about 6 weeks having Christmas songs out of 52 weeks of the year

avatar

Piran

1

That's what I'm thinking! The Christmas takeover is just going to get bigger & bigger every year, as we've seen since the introduction of streaming into the charts, haha. :)

avatar

Piran

0

That's still over 10% of the year, which means that some of the biggest Christmas songs ('All I Want For Christmas Is You' & 'Last Christmas') will probably sneak on to the Chart Of The Year for 2020! :P

P

PN

1

Precisely. Even last year Wham were 95th in the EOY chart, and Mariah 84th! Both will be higher this year, definitely

avatar

Piran

0

Maybe 'Fairytale Of New York' could sneak in there too, haha. :)

P

PN

1

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Probably Mariah around 63rd, Wham 80th, and FONY about 96th

avatar

Piran

1

Good guesses! Will we get a year where Mariah gets so many streams in December that she ends up in the Top 40? ;)

avatar

šŸ§” oliviasnoodles šŸœ

0

thatā€™d be overkill lmao, but itā€™d definitely be interesting.

M

Mark

1

What they should do is restrict the number of ACR songs to around 10 so only the top of the charts is flooded with Christmas songs allowing newer songs to chart.

P

PN

0

They won't do that though as there are so many songs on ACR, meaning that the likes of Dance Monkey might get another run in the top 40

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, that sounds like an approach that might work. :)

P

PN

1

Definitely, maybe not next year but sometime this decade I think

avatar

Sakgra

1

at least legends like Mariah take their revenge haha

avatar

Piran

1

They do! That being said, she'll be dethroned by sausage roll guy on Friday. :/

avatar

Piran

1

I think so too, especially given how early everyone started this year, haha. :)

avatar

Michael

2

Seems that a lot of the christmas songs are dropping this week, which means people must be getting fed up of them since mid November. They started listening way too early

avatar

Piran

1

I don't think it's even the fact that everyone started early this year, but more because the latest restrictions around a large part of the country means that people are sadly feeling less festive. :/

Also, the First Look & Monday's Update are always based more on sales, so the Christmas classics tend to climb back throughout the course of the week!

Yeah, that's a very polarising list, haha.

At least you really love her indie approach, giving her latest two albums perfect scores! :D

You really liked her last 2 albums which is cool.

I like 1989 best, followed by Evermore. Not sure about the others yet but Folklore is probably in the lower ranks.

Oh wow, so 'Evermore' is a big improvement over 'Folklore' for you then? ;)

NBNC is by FAR the best on evermore. Exile wins folklore

exile was clearly the best on folklore, but the last great american dynasty, mirrorball, this is me trying, cardigan and epiphany are up there.

For as much as Iā€™d be very tired of seeing it for the third year running, it looks like LadBaby will probably be taking the Christmas #1 of 2020 next week, given the massive first day sales numbers that heā€™s got!

Iā€™m personally backing JBā€™s remake of ā€˜Holyā€™ with the NHS Choir! After the disaster that 2020 has been for everyone, the tributes & proceeds need to go to the tirelessly working doctors & nurses of our nation have that saved many lives during this pandemic.

Mind you, given the insane streaming numbers that sheā€™ll be getting throughout the next week & the fact that Christmas Day falls on a Friday (the day the tracking week changes) this year, I wouldnā€™t even rule out Mariah just yet! :P

To be honest, its clear that he actually cares about the charity this year. The past two years the song was solely about sausage rolls, but this year the lyrics are majoritively about supporting key workers and the Trussell Trust. But the song itself, aside from the lyrics, is worse than the last two years in terms of rhythm and flow, but it does grow on you the more you listen to it. Currently a strong 6/10 but could get higher in the next few days. Personally, as much as I don't like his songs that much, I'm backing JB like you, but I think its a three-way-race between LadBaby, JB and Mariah, which will end in that order.

avatar

Piran

2

LadBaby had like a 60x times lead though & yeah, while his songs are getting annoying, I always have to respect him for the cause, especially in a year like this.

Either way, it's going to be one of the more interesting Christmas #1 battles in a while! :P

avatar

Mrsliver

1

And he'll fall the week after lol

P

PN

0

Yep. Last year he went from 1 to 52, the second biggest fall for a song in OCC history, after Three Lions went from 1-97

avatar

Piran

1

I bet he'll almost drop out of the Top 100 by next week, since the following chart update will be on New Year's Day! :P

P

PN

1

That's a good point, I didn't think of that. Usually the week after Christmas is when the Christmas songs rise a bit more (and when Mariah peaks at 2 annually), but this time that probably won't happen, Mariah might still be there on New Year's day, but she will definitely be gone on my birthday (the week after)

I'm confused about the rules nowadays. Would the Justin Bieber / NHS thing count as a new single or just another version of the single that was in recently? That's what they did with Levitating and lots of other things with a million remixes and re-recodings. They seem to whack all the Band Aids together even though they're completely different artists in every conceivable way. All very confusing!

avatar

Piran

1

I don't know, but I imagine they'll just recredit it, but with the NHS Choir featuring alongside JB instead of Chance The Rapper. :)

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

The band aids still chart separately, you will most likely see band aid 2 in next week's chart

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Why does everyone think JB will do so well next week?

avatar

Piran

1

Interesting that you have Christmas Day, New Year's Day & your birthday all in the same two weeks of one another! Extra big celebration for you each year then, I'm guessing? ;)

P

PN

1

Exactly, the best time of year for me, definitely!

P

PN

0

They're all hoping for LadBaby to not be number 1 XD. It probably will peak at 2 next week

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

To be fair, I do not think they will stand a chance of being No.1 again as there is much more competition than ever and to be honest it is all about sausage rolls and eating. I respect that they are releasing this for charity and I am not being rude but the lyrics are sorta lame. I guess it gets more boring through the years when they release a song.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I have nothing against LadBaby doing this for charity at all, but it's becoming repetitive at this point!

We need another charity song like supporting our hard-working key workers to get #1 instead! I wouldn't even mind the song against the person who ruined Christmas to get there either. :/

avatar

Piran

It would be for me normally, buy yesterday's announcement badly affected our family's plans. :/

P

I can understand, I'm assuming you live in a tier 4 place. Living in tier 2 though, I can only empathise.

avatar

Piran

I live in a Tier 1 actually, but my older brother lives in Tier 4, so we'll really be missing him this Christmas! :(

avatar

Cameron

6

Since it's Christmas next week, a lot of us will be spending our time enjoying ourselves with our families at home. But there are some people who sadly won't have that luxury and they are the heroes called the NHS workers who have had to deal with a real a horrible year working endless hours to put others first and provide care for others. Make sure they are in your hearts when you wake up Christmas morning and are sitting at the table for Christmas Dinner. God bless the NHS.

avatar

Piran

2

Well said! This is why I really want them to be #1 next week. :)

avatar

Cameron

2

Even if it isn't #1, it will raise so much money for charity which what it's all about, same with LadBaby

avatar

Piran

2

As I've always said, the chart position doesn't really matter, the proceeds do. :)

avatar

Shadowcat222

2

Yes they will be, in England you teally support charity singles, in France no one cares about charity, sad!

P

PN

2

The amount of charity singles this year is mental. THe money that will go towards all of these causes is amazing and I'm supportive of all of the causes

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, we're probably the country that support charity singles the most. :)

Speaking of France, did you hear that OCC are going to be taking over from SNEP in compiling the French Singles Chart?

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Perhaps they are more charitable in France and donate to charity without feeling the need to have something in return?

avatar

Shadowcat222

3

Yes I commented on the article^^ its cool I think. The french singles chart is not as good as the british one...but this week the number one is fever by Angele & Dua, my favourite song for weeks so Im happy!

You're welcome! ;)

I've got a Taylor list of my own coming either later or tomorrow, haha.

Honestly, I donā€™t know how to feel about ā€˜Willowā€™ debuting at #3!

On one hand, Iā€™m incredibly happy that Taylor can still manage to get Top 3 singles after almost 15 years in the music industry & with her ninth studio album, but itā€™s so frustrating knowing that this amazing ballad was purely denied going all the way only because of the particular time of the year it is. :/

Literally, this would probably be a clear winner if it was released in any month!

Oh well, at least itā€™s awesome that ā€˜Champagne Problemsā€™ & especially ā€˜No Body, No Crimeā€™ joined it as the next highest debuts. :)

Iā€™m also delighted that ā€˜Evermoreā€™ itself became her sixth #1 album, making her the first living artist of the 21st century to lead the albums chart twice in the same year! :D

No matter what you think of the album (& youā€™re always entitled to your opinion), you canā€™t deny that she put a lot of time & effort into this over lockdown.

avatar

Ian Robert Herechuk

2

Yes, seemed a strange Decision to go up against all the Christmas songs in the singles charts. But albums usually sell more in December, so perhaps that's the driving force.

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, I think Taylor is trying to be more of an albums artists than a singles artist at this point! I also have a feeling that she also wanted to release it now to drive Christmas sales & also because it was her birthday this past weekend. :)

avatar

Blank

1

Give it 2 weeks after all the Christmas dropout and the traditional low January sales.
#1 then!

avatar

Piran

2

'Positions' is also going on ACR soon, so it doesn't look like there's a lot that'll challenge it in the New Year for now. :)

K

Kevan

3

Those older holiday hits should have a separate chart since they come back every year. Only new releases are allowed to chart on the OSC Top 100. It's so frustrating to see my queen being blocked from topping the singles chartšŸ˜£

avatar

David N'jama

2

Tbh. This particular time of the year is the reason why it's number 3, nothing much to compete with. So fingers crossed for January

avatar

Piran

2

Hopefully... we know who's getting it on Christmas Day though. :/

avatar

Piran

2

I kind of agree & yeah, it would've been amazing to see Taylor score her second #1 today. She's my queen too! Actually, no, she's my goddess, haha. :)
