Streaming has made the charts totally meaningless, there are too many dinosaurs in this list. Don't get me wrong, I love dinosaurs, in fact dinosaurs made the better music than modern day. But I look at the chart now (speaking as a dinosaur myself) looking to see what artists of today who are on the top of their game and (this is a total exaggeration to make a point) see a list dominated by relics of the past.

Midnight Sky and Prisoner would've both been at the top10 if it weren't for christmas songs. ughh

Plastic Hearts (track) made it to the charts this week! Yayyy!

Miley is becoming such a huge force in the UK this era.

Can someone explain to me how can the single Live it up by Mental as anything be number 1 in the downloads charts yet not be in the official top 100? Something doesnt add up here.

avatar

Rector

0

It doesn't take a lot of downloads to be number 1 there. Its total sales this week is just over 3,300, barely half required to chart in the official top 100

DK

Dave Knight

0

Blimey thats weird, so based on that, to be lets say number 100 in the download charts might be from only 2 or 3 downloads?
To put it another way what format are the majority of people using to get singles in the official top 100? Surely not streaming alone?

avatar

GS

1

Because no one want to listen to it

DK

Dave Knight

0

I just clicked on sales top 100 and Mental as anything is number 1 there too, so is sales a combination of downloads and physical sales? If so you gotta wonder how it still hasent made the official top 100.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Not sure what you mean by that? If a single is number 1 in the sales charts and download charts combined how on earth doesnt it impact on the official charts? Does this mean in other words the majority of the official top 100 is made up of streaming? You got to ask the question this seems strange given streaming was only made legal towards influencing the charts a few years ago. Now all of a sudden its dominating it which doesnt seem fair at all. It only means people of a very young age are dominating the charts from how they obtain their music. For example I am 51 but wouldnt stream music, I'd much prefer to have the product in my hands. Its widely known that artists are getting a raw deal in terms of streaming so it begs the question why is it allowed to influence chart positions on the official charts. Its an injustice to the artists to me.

DK

Dave Knight

0

The other thing is where do we draw the line with how we listen to music and how it should affect chart positions? Streaming seems a fickle way to let it create a chart position if you think about it. You could argue well I heard Weekend Blinding lights 10 times today on various radio stations so should that push it up a few notches in the charts based on the fact I heard it 10 times in one day? Its all become farcicle.

avatar

GS

1

Nobody is streaming it, which means its not charting

avatar

GS

2

Also, the christmas songs are in the way of it charting

avatar

Rector

0

I wouldn't say 2 or 3 but more of tens or hundreds.
It is mainly streaming, yes. With a little download/physical to help.

avatar

Rector

0

Sales = downloads + physicals yes. But Mental's song is not available as a physical copy (as seen in the Physical Singles Chart) so it doesn't help. Also the 3,300 is its total sales this week, not just downloads alone.

avatar

Rector

0

to be fair, it is the first time ever that a number 1 in the downloads/sales chart did not appear in the official top 100. As explained earlier, the downloads and sales chart are two different charts and account for the same amount of charts sales. (3,300 total sales. It doesn't mean 3,300 in downloads chart and 3,300 in sales chart = 6,600)

As much as I agree downloads/physicals should dominate the charts, we are currently in the streaming era and there is really nothing we could do. Downloads already outweigh streaming by counting as 1 sale while streaming needs 100 (premium) or 600 (ad-funded) plays to count for 1 sale but it's obviously not enough. It also doesn't help that we are approaching Christmas (a larger one no less) so the track gets pushed down by these festive classics.

DK

Dave Knight

0

I just find that a shame that streaming doninates the charts now, especially as artists are getting a raw deal on streaming. I am surprised the charts company are allowing streaming as a legal way of compiling the charts.

DK

Dave Knight

0

I think people sign up to places like Spotify or Deezer reasonably cheaply and overnight it seems this is the way people listen to their music. But I dont think it would be so popular had people had to pay a fair price for it. Which is why artists are getting the raw deal. This needs sorting in my opinion asap.

DK

Dave Knight

0

But thats my point, it shouldn't be this way.

The charts today looks farcicle and a joke. If people had to part with hard earned cash to buy the physical product it would look completely different. Streaming should be banned simply on the fact artists dont get paid their fair share. Official charts please get this changed and we might see some variety back in the charts.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

2

I'm pretty sure the artists would disagree with you there, they get far more money from streaming than a physical sale, it just takes a lot longer and get far less to start with. Hence all the big hit makers(and record companies) who could afford not to have their songs available for streaming didn't so they could reap huge reward but then when that died out they soon let their tracks available to stream to get all that extra income...

DK

Dave Knight

0

Well Nile Rogers was being interviewed on the radio just 2 days ago, and he said artists are not getting the correct amount for streaming, but is campaigning to get this changed. Thats why I said streaming shouldn't influence the charts until this is sorted. Its an unfair representation of how popular a song is. Like I said in an earlier post, people are more likely to actually like a song with affection if they bought a physical product compared to a disposable product. If you look at the physical product top 100 its completely different to what the charts company call the official top 100. What baffles me the most is where can I actually buy physical singles? I went to my local HMV and asked where can I buy vinyl or cd singles and the guy looked at me like I was an alien. But the offical charts company do a vinyl singles chart, but I cant seem to buy any anywhere even online. So I am baffled by the fact there is a current chart for them. In my opinion we only need one chart, and any physical format should influence it, but more importantly be widely available to buy otherwise downloading or streaming has an unfair advantage on the charts. For example I am 51 years old and would prefer to buy a vinyl single or cd single but the very fact its almost impossible to buy any how can my favourite artists have a hit single anymore? For example I wanted to buy the latest AC/DC single on vinyl ideally but would have settled on a cd single but I cant get either, so how are bands like AC/DC meant to get a hit single if that particular fan base cant purchase the product in a physical format? Now you see what I mean about streaming isnt a fair reflection on what the potential hits that could be in the official top 100. The majority of the charts are made up of a younger audience who are into downloading and streaming which in turn has ommited the variety we used to have when the physical product reigned as the only way to obtain music. Which was a much fairer way to buy music for all concerned especially the artists. That's what I meant about the official charts are farcicle these days. And the music industry is in disarray in my view.

Not sure what you mean, the official charts is farcicle these days, it should be purchased goods which counts, not streaming, it only prooves anything can get in the top 40. We need better regulating, and artists need better pay for streaming in the first place.

I wouldn't be surprised if the record doesn't stand for much longer. If 'Last Christmas' gets to #1 for example it would take that record as would 'Fairytale Of New York'....

NICE!!!!

Hope Last Christmas or Fairytale Of New York can get there too.

Right, now ‘Last Christmas’ or ‘Fairytale Of New York’ (preferably the former), can take it next week. Unless a track from ‘Evermore’ is a contender for #1, that is! ;)

Honestly. with the majority of the chart being Christmas songs now, I didn’t prepare a review for the Top 40... I just cared for Mariah being #1 & it actually happened!

Not only has one of the most iconic festive classics of all-time finally topped the charts (26 years overdue if you ask me!), but this chart proves that ACR can be defeated, so it’s a double win for me.

Honestly, between this history-making moment & my idol releasing another surprise album today, this chart has just made my week!

I’m absolutely ecstatic right now. :)

Now we just need the other one to do so too....Fairytale.
Although Shaky being in his highest week in both singles and albums this month for 15 years. Over 30 years in the case of singles, is my highlight.

I hope so! I feel like ‘Last Christmas’ deserves it more for now, but hey, we know what can go to #1 after that one. :)

Personally I count them all as #2s, with digital re-issues (as opposed to a 26-year-old release getting to #1 'at last'). Of the 3 physical #2s above, all 3 digital re-issues are currently in their highest position with 3 of their traditional sales weeks to go (24th/31st/7th). One digital reissue has exceeded it's physical peak, one equalled and the other still below.

Last Christmas now will always be the biggest selling #2 physical hit. If it gets to #1 and we combine the physical and digital issues, then we have a new best-selling #2 of all time. But which?

Since digital issues came in, Christmas reissues have been becoming bigger and bigger hits year on year: More and more of the chart are Christmas reissues of previous physical hits, a few minor new hits (Kelly Clarkson / Ariana Grande / Sia) and Jess Glynne with a brand new one for this year!

Of the old songs, they're usually in roughly the same order each year and reaching higher peaks with each successive year until the top of the chart is so near, they can't go any higher (The 3rd year running Fairytale has hit #4 and 4th year in the top 5).

The reasons for this year are obvious (and it's started earlier this year too), but any insight why this is a trend for the whole of the previous decade and not just a blip year?

Carry on at this rate, we'll have a top 10 comprising of only old Christmas songs by 2025!

The only modern Christmas hit (21st century) that I think will have any chart consistency going into future decades is ‘Santa Tell Me’!

I hope ‘Underneath The Tree’ can do the same though. :)
