So any ideas for our new TV show about music?

RH

Richard Hammond

0

Well we need a name for the TV show!

JC

Jeremy Clarkson

1

Yes we do. Can you think of any?

RH

Richard Hammond

0

We could call it, "Clarkson, Hammond and May's musical show"

JC

Jeremy Clarkson

0

Or how about, "Clarkson, Hammond and May's musical talk show",

RH

Richard Hammond

0

Can we change the subject because I thought of a brilliant idea!

JC

Jeremy Clarkson

0

Yeah of course we can and what's the idea, Hammond?

RH

Richard Hammond

0

Well why don't we ask Scott Mills if we can do the Official UK top 40 on Radio 1 tomorrow and let him have a break this week?

JC

Jeremy Clarkson

1

That sounds like a brilliant idea. How hard can it be to count down the Official UK top 40 tomorrow.

RC

Richard Clarkson

2014 was the worst year for music!

FG

Frank Griffin

0

No it wasn't. 2014 was a brilliant year for music. I loved most songs from 2014! Especially It's My Birthday by Will.I.am.

RC

Richard Clarkson

0

Hahahahahahahahaha. That is such a rubbish song. Infact that is the worse song I have ever heard in my life. You shoulf get a life you sad weirdo!

FG

Frank Griffin

0

No it is not a rubbish song. You are a sad weirdo. Who on earth do you think you are calling me a sad weirdo because I like music from 2014. If you don't the music from 2014 then listen to music from a different year!

RC

Richard Clarkson

0

Hahahahahaha. OMG you such a weirdo listening to such trash. I think you need to get a better music taste! Every song from 2014 was really bad.

FG

Frank Griffin

0

No every song from 2014 was NOT actually really bad. I loved Happy from Pharrell Williams because that was a brilliant song. YOU should be the one that should listen to more music instead of slagging off songs from 2014 or any other year you might hate. I don't see Coolocelot101 or Piran Delves complaining about the Charts from previous years so why should you. Coolocelot101's favourite year was 2015 and I loved that year as well. If you don't like this decade then listen to a different decade of music!!!!

It stands for "Accelerated Chart Ratio".

It means that if a song has been on the chart for at least 10 weeks & declined more than the rest of the singles market for three consecutive weeks, the value of its streams are halved.

One time, there was a tourist attraction called Madame Tussauds Rock Circus in Picadilly Square London. It opened in August 1989 and closed compeletely in September 2001. The Museum was a walkthrough attractions with each room showing artists from a certain decade. The attraction started from the 1950s to the then present day in which case the 1990s. It was said to go top 20 and then it flopped so badly.. it also should show Simon that this year didn’t work and the show has to be fixed next year

avatar

Piran

1

Apparently, there's another spin-off called 'X Factor: The Band' starting Monday. If the celebrity version couldn't produce anything big, I doubt this one will either sadly!

I hope they go back to the original format next year, but even then, it's very clear that the show is long past its best now. :/

AW

Adam white

1

The band seems more promising than the celeb version but I don’t think they will get a hit out of it.. they are reworking the format and going back to basics next year apparently stripping back everything and making the show just about the talent now which is needed!!

I don't either. Heck, they barely get a hit with the original format nowadays anyway! :/

So, as promised, here are my Top 100 Songs Of 2019! :)

This is based mostly on how my Crown Note leaderboard for the year looked like, but some songs moved about due to quality going up or down & the total number of streams they got.

Once again, disagreeing with this list is fine, but please be respectful regardless!

Hope you all enjoy.

Hi Piran,
I've been reading your reviews for a while now and thought I'd comment on this list. Overall I mostly agree with what you write, however, I really dislike both Señorita (which is the only song that I find so annoying I turn off my radio or switch the station) and Shallow, which I just find plain boring. I find it difficult myself to define my favourite songs of the year. At the moment I am really enjoying listening to White Mercedes by Charli XCX.

Have a nice weekend.

avatar

Piran

1

Hi, thank you for very much for your comment! :)

I'm pleased to hear that we're mostly in agreement, although disappointed to hear that you didn't like 'Senorita' nor 'Shallow' that much at all, since these were among my longest Crown Note #1's of the past year! That said, everyone's opinion is always appreciated by me, so that's fair enough.

'White Mercedes' is a decent choice & I'm surprised it hasn't become bigger in at least the UK!

I hope you have a nice weekend too.

Wowww! #72 and 84 are great songs! Sadly, didn't even get into the top 100. So glad to see many Sigrid's songs on the list, she does a genuine and lovely pop. I was hoping New York City by Kylie could enter unless on your top 100... 😞😞😂😂

They were recommended to me by a Finnish user on Headline Planet, but I also listen to: Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian & Swedish occasionally too.

I review everything hot inside and bubbling just under the UK's official top 40 - and as the Christmas songs begin their annual chart takeover, we still have a couple of releases managing to pop their heads out and shine inside the top 40 - one of which, doing so quite unusually! Let's get started.

(NEW ENTRIES) #10 + #12: THE WEEKND - HEARTLESS // BLINDING LIGHTS
I'm combining these into one, because I've mostly the same things to say about them. The Weeknd is incredibly hit-or-miss with me, it's actually insane - I've loved upbeat tracks of his like "Starboy" and downbeat ones like "Call Out My Name", but something like "Can't Feel My Face" was largely forgettable and at a certain point, a bit annoying. Now with "Heartless", there's some pretty interesting production going on, and I love how it and the lyrical content alternate throughout the song between the life of partying, drugs and alcohol; and the sadness that comes with that. Despite the track not being convincing enough, however, it's the better out of the two for me: "Blinding Lights" is a promotional song for a Mercedes commercial, and while the beat with this one is certainly much more intriguing, there's not much else that captures me at all - "Heartless" had at least some heartfelt delivery, this one doesn't really! I wanted to give these a joint score, because I feel mostly the same about them, but I really can't: so I'm giving "Heartless" a light 6/10, and "Blinding Lights" a pretty strong 5/10.

(NEW ENTRY) #14: ELLIE GOULDING - RIVER
So this track has managed to break into the top 40, being available exclusively on Amazon - and did so with a very good peak! This means this is now Ellie's highest-charting single this year, and it got me thinking: when was the last time a track exclusive to a single platform has managed to break the top 40? Turns out, it was last year, and the track was once again only available on Amazon Music! Katy Perry's 'Cozy Little Christmas' managed to sneak to a #23 peak last year, so it appears this year they're trying the same strategy to attempt to convert people to their streaming platform. (if only it was any good, but that's a rant for another day) Now, I love Ellie, and she's had quite a weird year, her last single 'Hate Me' managing to barely dent the top 40, and it was quite an unusual one. So here we have her covering a 1971 song of the same name by Joni Mitchell, and it's a slow piano ballad. I thought this should definitely work out, considering her strong vocals - but I suppose not. See, I'm not one for Christmas songs, but I don't think that has anything to do with that fact here. I think what this comes down to, she tries her hardest to do this, but this is just not the right song for her. The vocal curves that she attempts to do just don't fit her voice, in my opinion - she doesn't have the voice for this. Again, I'm generally a fan of Ellie, but I'm going to have to give this a 4/10, sorry.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #40: TREVOR DANIEL - FALLING
I can't help but think of Juice WRLD when I hear this song - Trevor Daniel's voice sounds strikingly similar (although that could just be me), and, of course, the lyrical content is also, just like with the former, incredibly raw and heartfelt. The track itself is actually kinda reminiscent to "Lucid Dreams", again, that might be me, but unfortunately, I genuinely prefer that one - Juice had a bit more of a consistent flow and the Sting sample was something else, where as with "Falling" we get a pretty basic trap beat and apart from the guitar strings in the beginning, nothing really capturing about this song, or something that would make it "catchy". In a week with two other urban tracks, which I also didn't really enjoy, this doesn't stick out in any way, sadly! Very light 5/10.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

And that's about it for this week! Not a very eventful week overall, apart from all the holiday songs obviously - and as much as I'm generally not a fan of them, it does really put you in a Christmas mood. Mariah Carey is, as per usual, the highest of the bunch, and this really could be the year she gets to #1 - not on Christmas, though, that's a peak she's hardly going to reach, considering her streams are halved all the way through and it's going to be tracking data from the week of 13th-19th of December. Meanwhile, "Dance Monkey" claims a 10th week at the top, an astonishing record considering the chart rules that are set in place and usually prevent such things, and she's by all means looking set to grab an 11th one, as there's not much in sight that could dethrone her. Predicting a 12th one is a roll of the dice, however - she declined again this week, a 2nd one in row, and all she has to do is decline again next week to be put on ACR and out of the running for Christmas #1. What does that leave us with, again? Lewis Capaldi's "Before You Go" is a strong contender, and his team will undoubtedly push it for that title, but also Stormzy could grab it, in my opinion - his new album comes out next week and that might give it enough of a push to send "Own It" to the top. The race is as exciting as ever - and with two weeks still remaining, quite anything is possible.

My latest CrownNote chart is not up just yet - this post will be updated when it's available!

Good review once again, even if 'Heartless' is the only one I really agree on, haha! :D

My Top 100 Songs Of 2019 are up by the way.

avatar

Piran

2

I don't know, Mariah went from 34-8 this week alone, but it's still only the first chart of December!

At the moment, it really looks like she'll get both the Christmas & New Year #1 if this kind of momentum continues.

avatar

akyovbashiev

2

I assumed we wouldn't be agreeing about a lot of the new entries, haha! Although, apart from "Heartless", we do also seem to agree on "Falling" in that it's not that good.

Oh, that's cool! It's a bit early for my personal Top 100 of 2019, but I'll be checking yours out!

avatar

Piran

2

Oh yeah, I forgot about 'Falling', but that's honestly just a Post Malone rip-off.

That's alright, hopefully you'll like my chart! :)

avatar

akyovbashiev

2

Yeah, she does have strong momentum, but a lot of Christmas tracks shot up this week, so obviously Mariah would be the highest. It's anybody's guess, really, whether she will make it or not.

I do still think a Christmas #1 for her is a bit unlikely, but the week after that could be hers!

avatar

Piran

2

I honestly think the chart that follows Christmas could see 70+ festive songs inside the Top 100, with 8-9 in the Top 10! :O

Last year was crazy enough, but the streaming impact looks to be even greater this time round.

avatar

Karl Fursey

3

It's the 25th anniversary of Mariah Carey's festive classic this December, what a wonderful achievement it would be if she could bag Christmas or New Year number one .
The 1994 festive chart topper which kept Mariah at number two, East 17s Stay another day has barely re-entered the chart this week.

avatar

akyovbashiev

2

It's certainly a bad time for any song that's not a Christmas song, haha!

I do wonder though, with the increase in streaming numbers in recent years, which obviously also translates to holiday songs also flooding the charts in much larger quantities and with much higher peaks, will we ever see a post-Christmas chart that's 90-95% Christmas songs? I think 100% might be asking a bit too much, but the former certainly could happen at some point.

avatar

Piran

0

I'm not sure that'll be possible, since you'd literally need the 95th biggest Christmas song of the week to be streamed more than the 5th biggest non-Christmas song of the week for that to happen, haha!

Mind you, I don't think we'll come too far off though, unless the OCC introduce another rule that prevents festive classics from getting this high.

Here's hoping for a new number one next week!

#10 - "Heartless" - The Weeknd - 6/10
Not as catchy as Blinding Lights, but the beat was pretty good.

#12 - "Blinding Lights" - The Weeknd - 8/10
The catchy instrumental reminds me of Take on Me. This might be my favorite song from The Weeknd.

#14 - "River" - Ellie Goulding - 6/10
Great vocals but the instrumental is really sad. Not sure if it fits the Christmas theme.

#40 - "Falling" - Trevor Daniel - 4/10
Not a bad song. Beat was good and the vocals were not terrible, but it's not for me.

Piran

Agreed on everything, except I would rate 'River' a little higher.

I see what you mean about it not really feeling as festive as it's trying to be though!

My thoughts & observations on the UK chart as always…

‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones & I extends its singles chart reign to a 10th consecutive week at #1! In doing so, it ties an Official Chart record alongside ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston from 1992 & ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna ft Jay-Z in 2007, that being the longest running #1 of all-time by a female artist!

Commercially, ‘Dance Monkey’ racked up 75,000 chart sales for the tracking week, which includes 9.39 million streams.

We’ve gone from one Christmas song inside the Top 40 last week to nine this week! That’s almost a quarter of the entire chart, with still three more charts to go before festive classics have their biggest impact.

‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa retains the top spot on the national airplay chart!

‘Dance Monkey’ also continues its dominant run on YouTube, where it’s spending an eighth consecutive week at #1! Compared to last week, it increased 5% in views to 4.6 million over the past seven days.

THE WEEKND - HEARTLESS (#10)
While The Weeknd’s always been hit-or-miss for me, I’ve always been able to see his appeal as an R&B singer, since he has a voice that’s very distinct on the radio; you know it’s him straight away! As for this, it certainly falls more on the positive side of things, although I still have my reservations. Of course, I still love the vocal display here, which with how they alternate between a huskier deep tone to the passionate falsetto, almost reminds me of Michael Jackson & while the trap beat here might be very predictable & overused, it’s the kind of vibe that suits The Weeknd almost better than any other act in the charts right now! That said, where I can’t get on board with this so much is in the content, where he discusses how fame made him “heartless”, which makes you think this would be a sadder vibe from him, but instead he seems to take up almost all the airtime bragging about girls, but also being very disrespectful to them! I mean, the lyrics , but everything else seems to work fine. So for that, solid 6/10!

THE WEEKND - BLINDING LIGHTS (#12)
Now, this is more like it! I definitely meant the MJ comparison in the ‘Heartless’ review above as a compliment, but with The Weeknd now taking on brighter & groovier vocals, this might actually be an even better fit for him! I’ve also always loved whenever The Weeknd goes into a disco-funk throwback (such as when he collaborated with Daft Punk on ‘Starboy’ & ‘I Feel It Coming’), which is why the synth-driven electro-pop sparkle is a standout here; it might pack less of a punch than its companion single, but it’s a heck of a lot more fun! See, this is a much more effective approach on how to get a lover, because it’s really impressive! This might’ve been the lower of the two debuts for The Weeknd, but it certainly has more hit potential. As such, strong 8/10!

ELLIE GOULDING - RIVER (#14)
Yeah, we’re not only getting Christmas songs re-enter, but there’ll also be a lot of debuts here & there as we approach the 25th! As for this, it’s particularly interesting to see it this high, since it was an Amazon Music exclusive up until literally a few days ago. It’s also a cover of the 1971 classic by Joni Mitchell & on top of that, it’s actually really enjoyable! It’s honestly reminiscent of her early days where she covered the classic ‘Your Song’ for the John Lewis Christmas Advert for example, especially with the rich vocal delivery & her cooing upper register, which is primarily a piano-driven ballad! What I respect a lot more coming from Ellie is how she can carry the descriptive details so well in her singing, which allows this to resonate on a very strong level, even when like me, you’ve only heard it for the first time! I do wish we got a bit more on the ending, but that’s something I feel could’ve been improved on the original anyway. Regardless, I still think this is such a sweet remake of the original, so I’m giving it a solid 8/10!

TREVOR DANIEL - FALLING (#40)
Looks like we have another TikTok entry sneaking its way in despite all the Christmas songs & while I’ve never got on board with a majority of songs getting big from this platform, trap singers have been growing on me a lot throughout 2019, but not enough for me to get on board with this, because it’s honestly nothing you’ll care about! Seriously, we’ve heard Post Malone do this sort of thing about a year or two ago, except with production that’s nowhere near as cheap as it is here! He even sounds like a less convincing version of Post Malone too, especially when you only have a single verse & a hook that doesn’t even any attempt to rhyme. I mean, the low-end rumbles of the synths along with the watery guitars might’ve developed a bit of an atmosphere at points here, but even then, they’re fairly short-lived! Even the content doesn’t go into any sort of detail that’s worth a lot of discussion, so yeah, its chances of becoming a hit with any sort of staying power are extremely unlikely, especially when December has more competition than ever in the build-up to Christmas! Honestly, I’ll stick with those festive classics, not something with this much mediocrity. For me, light 4/10!

On the albums chart, it’s a lucky 13 for Robbie Williams, as he scores his 13th #1 studio album with ‘The Christmas Present’, tying Elvis Presley’s record for the most #1 albums ever by a solo artist!

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘You’re In My Heart’ by Rod Stewart & The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (3-2), ‘Everyday Life’ by Coldplay (1-3), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (stationary at #4) & ‘Back Together’ by Michael Ball & Alfie Boe (stationary at #5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Christmas Tree Farm’ by Taylor Swift, ‘Adore You’ by Harry Styles, a couple of tracks from ‘Romance’ by Camila Cabello, a couple other new Christmas songs & maybe even more.

I’ll also be posting my Top 100 Songs Of 2019 on this thread a little later this evening!

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Dance Monkey may be at 1 for the 10th week, but it cannot be compared with I will always love you as that was pure sales, and when people actually bought music rather than just watched videos which counted as sales. If streams had been around then, artists would have sold millions more, or clocked the views as sales.

avatar

Piran

2

If streaming was around back then, there probably wouldn't be many sales at all. People don't want to buy music when they can listen to it for free, just the way it is!

People's music consumption has changed considerably since then, so the chart formula also has to change with it to reflect popularity as accurately as possible! Besides, digital sales nowadays count for less than 3% of all units, while physical sales contribute for a negligible proportion.

That said, while 'I Will Always Love You' is a classic, I agree that I definitely couldn't put 'Dance Monkey' in the same league as it. Heck, I'm not even sure I could call 'Umbrella' a "classic" just yet!

Nigel Coleman

Without Physical Sales the charts mean nothing? Streaming are not sales and for the fact you can pay £10 a month and have access to thousands of songs, what is that saying reference towards the charts?
Keep living in a fantasy world cause the charts are dead now?

avatar

Piran

2

Physical sales are certainly big on the albums side of things, but on the singles chart, they account for ~0% of music consumption figures.

Even the OCC are suggesting this! Downloads have become a lot bigger in the past 20 years since almost all people would rather buy a song through their phone or computer without having to make a trip to do it! It saves both time & money, but honestly, it's also common sense at this point. Even then, digital sales are dying fast now... why do you think iTunes got took over by Apple recently?

As for why streaming's included, I already mentioned a comment about this a few weeks back! I'm not going to do it again. Sick of explaining it to everyone week after week! :/

Ultimately though, say physical sales were removed from existence last week, then the Top 100 you're seeing now would likely remain unaffected entirely.

avatar

akyovbashiev

5

Oh, you're my favorite type of person. Piran might be sick of explaining this to people like you, but I'm not - I have a field day doing so.

Saying that the chart means nothing without physical sales (mind you, not even downloads, lmao) is so delusional, you might want to double check if you actually believe what you're saying. If you really want the charts to be dead, sure. A quick look at the physical sales chart (which the OCC still compile, mind you! You can join the party of nay-sayers and claim that's the proper one) reveals it's so stagnant, it's become a joke. All that's left there are new releases entering and dropping quick, and really, really old singles still sticking around, because the physical singles market itself is dead.

Streaming does not equal sales, that I agree. It means much more. The musical landscape changes constantly, and if the chart does not reflect that, then that's when it literally becomes the joke you're suggesting it currently is. You want the music taste of, like, a couple of hundred people (if even that many) still buying physical singles to officially define popular music for a nation of 65 million people? Say that out loud, maybe a couple of times if once doesn't do it, and if you still hold that opinion... I genuinely don't know what to tell you.

Physical sales were huge decades ago. Then came downloads and physical sales started dying. Then came streaming and downloads too started dying. Things change. Get over it.

avatar

Piran

3

Couldn't have put it better myself!

Across the UK, hundreds (probably even thousands) of songs are being streamed every second.

On the other hand, I'm fairly sure none of my local supermarkets have sold even one physical single this week! :P

EDIT: I don't even know if many shops in my county still sell physical singles at all, because they're that outdated.
