Might not rank tonight. I’m currently listening to the new Gunna album - first track in, already very good. Man, I have a lot of albums to go through.

Can anyone think of some love it or hate it songs? It’s been like this with Dance Monkey and Toosie Slide. I think Barbie Girl and a few Justin Bieber songs are examples too. Also, mumble rap...

'Shape Of You', 'Freaky Friday' & 'Someone You Loved' are other examples that I can think of immediately.

I didn’t like Shape Of You, but I adore Someone You Loved (I never got why people disliked it) and Freaky Friday made me laugh a lot!

avatar

1

I liked all three of them, haha! :D

I think a lot of people found 'Someone You Loved' boring (which I disagree with) & 'Freaky Friday' apparently offended a lot of people.

I feel the need to say this...

I think you know I hate Blinding Lights, but I think I’m ranting about it too much and I feel the need to stop. To be honest I sometimes forget to say “in my opinion” too and I may sound like I’m giving attitude here. Plus I’ve been going through a bit of a rough patch recently so that might explain it. I just don’t wanna cause any drama or fall out with yous. You’re all awesome! :)

Yeah, no comments are updating for any user on Disqus, just on the article itself.

Oh well, at least we can still communciate on here, but yeah, it's a lot harder to do when you don't get notified about it.

It's meant I've probably missed a lot of replies from last week's Hot 100 article! :/

avatar

Fintendo

1

If a song charts for ten weeks or more and it declines three weeks in streaming, then the streaming ratio changes from 150:1 to 300:1, so it essentially halves its streaming sales, which is really annoying as it makes the data inaccurate, for example Blinding Lights would still be Number 1

I forgot it was Friday so this is gonna be late but welcome to another week of charting drama. Stateside, there's a lot of drama going on about the battle for number 1, doxxing, chart manipulation, and even 6ix9ine possibly leaking Billboard's points formula, and over here in the UK we get some of the fragments of that whole mess while ACR wreaks its usual havoc. In a somewhat unpredictable turn of events, ROCKSTAR hits number 1 and we have 2 new entries to the top 10! And by the way, as an aside, I’m so happy that Don’t Rush debuted on the Billboard charts in the States, it’s so exciting to see TikTok putting on some established UK rappers over there! Anyway, let’s have a look at this week’s new entries. I’m sick of being flagged for spam so I’m gonna be changing up the format yet again. Let’s get started.
At number #92 we have “Patient” by Bandokay, and I have to say I’m not a fan of this at all. I like UK drill in general but the production here is downright ugly, comprised off a fragmented vocal sample and some bass that fails to provide a steady knock for the song as there’s not enough low-end, instead it blurs into the rest of the production, the tinny percussion, overall it’s a mess and gets even more annoying as the song continues. Bandokay’s vocal performance is fine but this is just tedious to listen to. For me, a strong 3/10. Moving on, at number #85 we have “Can I” by Kehlani ft. Tory Lanez. There’s many things to like about this, I love the guitar sample, the overall vibe, the harsh, growling bass. Kehlani provides some sensual vocals and even Tory Lanez delivers a good vocal performance here in an R&B lane. There are some questionable lyrics which somewhat ruin the vibe, I recall at one point Tory Lanez saying “I got you leaking like a brake pipe” which is certainly an…odd analogy to go off, and frankly Kehlani’s flow gets boring and Tory Lanez hops on the exact same flow! So it really feels like a missed opportunity here. In addition I think there’s something off about the mixing here that leaves this song feeling a bit unclean and messy in places, but the hook is delicious and overall, I wouldn’t have a problem with this sticking around! I’m gonna give this a decent to strong 6/10.
At number #72 we have “Go Crazy” by Chris Brown and Young Thug…I wish people would stop harming their credibility by propping up Chris Brown’s career but it seems Young Thug wants to lean into a more R&B side here over a pretty standard trap knock. I don’t think the wooden-block sounding melody line in the production is gonna grow on anyone frankly. Chris’ vocal performance is ok, the hook is ok, kinda catchy. I’ve always been a fan of Young Thug’s weird vocal inflections, I think a combination of his voice being fairly low in the mix and him stripping it back somewhat means this couldn’t be as chaotic as maybe I would’ve liked from Thugger. I also have to say Chris Brown and Young Thug don’t have much chemistry and overall despite this being catchy and largely inoffensive, that I don’t really see what the point in this is. I’m gonna give this a strong 5/10. Moving onto number #65 we have “Zoo York” by Lil Tjay ft. Fivio Foreign and the late Pop Smoke, and I have to say I don’t like this. We have a standard drill beat that really doesn’t have much personality, it’s very run-of-the-mill, so we need good vocal performances. However, that isn’t what we get, Lil Tjay’s melodic flow doesn’t sound threatening at all and in fact sounds quite awkward over this beat, the vocals are buried too far in the mix and there’s too much reverb which prevents the vocals from being as up-front as they need to be to really hit. The hook is tedious, in my opinion. Fivio Foreign’s verse is ok, a lot of ad-libs, I’m not really sold on it, he isn’t much of a presence here. The only remotely interesting part of the song (and the reason it’s here) is Pop Smoke, who had a unique, husky voice which was pretty cool to be honest, it can certainly sound tough in the right context. He does ok here, but I’ve heard better from him. RIP though, all respect. For me, this is a decent 4/10.
Moving up to #55 we have “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn. Frankly I’m gonna admit my ignorance here and say I don’t know why this is here. I mean, of course, the virus, but we had a version of this with Katherine Jenkins recently, so I’m not sure why the version without her is charting now. Either way I sung my praises about the song when the Katherine Jenkins version charted. I have to say though I don’t like the ensemble vocals that show up halfway through the song, I think it ruins the delicate nature of the song, though I understand the sentiment. Of course Vera Lynn’s vocal performance and the lyrics remain untouched, it could perhaps be argued that the instrumentation could be a little clearer, could swell a little more, just be a little more tangible, but that’s nothing a remaster couldn’t fix and I’m not sure when this was last remastered (I’m going off a version uploaded to Youtube 9 years ago, if there’s a more relevant version to this week’s chart entry I apologise). That all being said I’m gonna give this a light 7/10, even if a version of it charted a few weeks back. Next up we have “Rose Gold” by Headie One, in at number #49. This is a better drill song, some twinkly keys and an eerie vocal sample complement throbbing bass and a pretty good vocal performance from Headie One, who definitely sounds comfortable here. The production could do to be a bit more dynamic though going into the second verse, but this is ok. For me, a light 6/10.
Our last 2 entries are all the way in the top 10, so let’s start with GOOBA by 6ix9ine at number #6. I’m sure a lot of people will hate this song, but I don’t mind it! 6ix9ine’s ridiculously obnoxious vocal delivery is infectious, his lyrics are frankly absurd to the point of parody (“Are you dumb, stupid, or dumb?”). 6ix9ine has managed to perfectly react to the media hype following his imprisonment and release, framing it all as a victory for him, in a deliberately provocative track that just revels in the pettiest of emotions, and honestly, I love that. The production is a bit one note, however, for me to really like 6ix9ine he needs more production like GUMMO, menacing and threatening in a way that really matches 6ix9ine’s vocal style. This just sounds pretty basic. Overall though, this may be controversial, but I have no problem with this, 6ix9ine really sounds like he’s having fun and it comes through all over the track. No one else could’ve made this track but 6ix9ine, and I think that’s accolade enough. Disclaimer though: I'm judging 6ix9ine here as an artist only and not a person. I'll leave that discussion for another time. Anyway, you may think a really high score is in order but the production does bother me, so it’s still only a decent 6/10 for me, it’s certainly not his most unique track and he definitely needs to work on his production choices. Anyway, let’s move onto our final song “Stuck With U” by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. Still not convinced these charity singles are starting to become about ego? Explain then, why this song was subject to a series of discounts to desperately make it run for number 1 on the Billboard charts? Moving onto the track itself, it’s hard to see it’s even worth the fuss. We’ve got a standard doo-wop instrumentation that feels completely inorganic and lifeless, Justin and Ariana deliver textbook vocal performances but their personalities don’t shine through, there’s little chemistry, everything about this is rote. The bass seems weirdly blown out in parts and in general this is a collaboration with so little firepower that it just makes me think, is it really worth all this attention? This all being said it’s really the context that sours this, because taking that away you just have a pretty inoffensive song with a catchy hook, so as such it’s getting a light 5/10. It can definitely be argued that I’m being charitable there though.
So for the best of the week, since “We’ll Meet Again” already had this acclaim very recently, I’m giving it to “Can I”. For worst of the week, I’m going with “Patient” for just being an irritating mess. Thanks for reading and here’s to this not being removed for spam!!

She released this collaboration with Charlie Puth back on Friday! Not only it is ridiculously chilled & feel-good, but it's catchy enough that it's looking like it'll debut in the Top 10 of my next chart.

Fun facts:

- Selling just below 45K, Rockstar sold the lowest for a #1 single since Clean Bandit reached the summit with Solo on a sale of 41.5K in June 2018.
- We have had four different No. 1 for the same number of weeks, a rate of turnover at the top of the charts not seen since April 2018.
- 6ix9ine's Gooba scores a #6 peak, beating his #9 peak with Kika in December 2018. Put them together!
- Future Nostalgia sold a mere 7.3K copies, setting a new record low for the #1 album since Blossoms did with 7.9K in August 2016.
- Future Nostalgia however, isn't the biggest-selling album of the week. That honour inevitably goes to Now That's What I Call Music 105 which sold 30.5K. Second place on the compilations table goes to the re-issued volume 5, which appears on CD for the first time since its release in 1985 with a sale of its own of 6.6K.

Marshmello & Halsey- Be Kind [6/10]
Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber- Stuck With U [4/10]

*In no way an endorsement of the artist

Rockstar being #1 is a little bit unexpected, but I'll take it over Toosie Slide.
I knew Stuck with U couldn't stay at #1 but I expected it to be at least top 3 :(
Break My Heart missed the top 10 AGAIN. But both Physical and Don't Start Now are rising so I'm happy
Really didn't want Dua to get the #1 album considering she might overtake the record of getting the lowest sales for a #1 album. We'll have to see how much she sold later.

Okay, time for ranks of the new entries!

#1: Rockstar (Strong 8/10) 🤟
#4: Stuck With U (Solid 7/10) 🏠
#6: GOOBA (Solid 2/10) 🐀
#24: Breaking Me (Strong 6/10) 💔
#40: Be Kind (Light 10/10) 🤝

Rockstar going to #1 is like the 8 weeks for Blinding Lights - came out of nowhere! But that’s a good surprise for me. :O

Stuck With U has a nice melody, and while Ari still has her talent, JB still has his mediocrity.

And oh God... the SNITCH is back at #6. Him getting the 2 marks if anything is because of his lyrical Latin flow, but the lyrics are nonsensical and the beat is recyclable.

Not much to say about Breaking Me but Be Kind... yes I did find something special! Halsey has adorable vocals again and the beat hits the spot. I love the lyrics about always confiding in a lover too. Special song, hope it climbs to the Top 10. :D

Thanks for reading, stay safe and be happy! :)

Well, 6ix9ine did make headlines worldwide with his trial, snitch memes and proved popular before his arrest. It was a matter of time before he came back. You should have seen him break Instagram Live records! :O

I think it’d get to Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head) first.

Sounds like a good idea! :)

I knew about him and stuff. But I just didn't expect it to blow up to this extent. But hopefully Gooba won't last to long.

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (15/05/2020 - 21/05/2020)

Man, I was expecting a lot of action to shake up the chart this week, but I didn’t think ‘Rockstar’ would have enough momentum to go to #1 this early, even if I did see the teaser article that was posted yesterday. That being said, the fact that it’s consistently dominant on both Spotify & Apple Music in the UK makes me think it might end up being at the top for multiple weeks! Honestly though, I’d be fine with that, it’s probably one of the better trap hits that 2020 has given us.

Yeah, it would’ve been cool to see ‘Stuck With U’ get there like the update suggested it might to continue the run of charity singles at the top, but either way, thank goodness ‘Toosie Slide’ fell again! Has the spell of Drake’s overly long #1 singles finally come to an end?

Speaking of ‘Stuck With U’, I like it a fair bit actually! Not going to lie, both Justin & Ariana have disappointed with a lot of their own music lately, so the fact that their harmonies are on point (they’re actually really close friends) & that they were effectively able to make a really sweet ballad despite quarantine was a pleasant surprise. I do wish the instrumentation was a bit more interesting though, as the song can feel a bit too slow at times, but otherwise, yeah, nice stuff. Solid 7/10!

Unfortunately, while they tried to deliver a positive message to everyone, 6ix9ine has done the complete opposite of that! Now, here’s probably the most controversial comment I’ve made in a while on this site, I’m not mad that 6ix9ine debuted in the Top 10 because of the song’s quality. I have to be honest, with the thumping bass & sinister mix creeping up as the song progresses, the production & especially the underlying beat works really well here! I don’t even mind Tekashi’s Latin-style delivery at places, even if his intense shouting can get annoying before you get about halfway through the song.

That being said, I want to make one thing abundantly clear… I might not be mad about the song’s quality, but I am mad about the artist behind it! Britain, do you realise that this guy has 27 accounts of assault against him, including one for attempted murder?! On top of that, he’s also a convicted p****phile & proven racist! He should be getting life imprisonment, but instead, you all gave him a Top 10 hit in this country. That’s disgusting!

So yeah, for ‘Gooba’ as a song, strong 5/10, but for 6ix9ine as an artist… oh God, let’s not even go there.

As for the lower regions of the chart, I’m happy to see ‘This City’ continuing to be a successful slower burner as it makes the Top 20. This actually reminds me of something Shawn Mendes would do, but with a lot more groove & a much better falsetto!

I’m also pleased that ‘Breaking Me’ is finally “breaking” out of Europe & gaining some recognition here! It reminds me of ‘Ocean Drive’ by Duke Dumont if you all EDM fans remember that? Either way, you need to check this out, solid 8/10.

That’s not even my favourite new entry of the week though! I do feel like with ‘This City’, its ascent up the chart will take a while, but if that means it have significant longevity or going on to peak high in the summer, then I’m all for it. Halsey puts her heart & soul into her vocals, Marshmello’s drop accompanies it well & the lyrics are incredibly caring. Thanks to Coolocelot for getting on board with this one first, because he found something really awesome here & it’s a solid 9/10 from me!

Actually, the debuts this week were much better than expected (minus the one that we won’t discuss any further), shame I can’t say the same about the re-entries. Seriously, why are ‘What A Man Gotta Do’ & ‘Someone You Loved’ back in the Top 40? I mean, they’re not even bad songs, but the radio won’t stop shoving them in our faces! Are either of them even on ACR yet? We’ve already got ‘Perfect’ & ‘Mr Brightside’ sticking around literally forever, we don’t need any more former hits doing the same.

As for the albums chart, it would’ve been awesome to see Hayley Williams score a #1 like the update suggested, since Paramore’s music brings me a lot of nostalgia. However, Dua Lipa got it, which is still incredible news given that it remains my favourite album of the year so far!

In regards to next week, I’m not sure how well ‘Daisies’ will hold up for Katy Perry, but Lewis Capaldi has a live album out now, so that’ll probably give almost every song he’s charted with a boost.

Until then, take care & have a nice weekend! :)

Nice review mate! I’ve posted my ranks for the new entries and why above. Rockstar was an unexpected #1 and DaBaby might even be Post Malone with a #1 titled Rockstar lol. Love it! And regards to Halsey, you are welcome. I found something special. :D

Hey Piran, nice analysis as always. Unfortunately Gooba will have a even bigger debut in the U.S. Happy Stuck With U managed to debut within the top 5 though.

Yeah, at least 'Gooba' isn't expected to reach #1 in the UK for now! Can't say the same about the US on Monday unfortunately.

I think it is because a lot of young people have this rebellious attitude and want to support there favorite artists no matter what. They honestly don't care what he has been accused of, as long as the song is good they will support it.

avatar

It samples it? I'm looking this up, haha! :)

I thought it was just similar to it, but I didn't know it might've actually been an interpolation of it.

avatar

Piran

2

Not sure why my reply isn't showing up on this page, but yeah, I'd be disappointed if 6ix9ine debuted at #1 in the US, especially when: 'Blinding Lights', 'Savage', 'Say So' & 'Stuck With U' would all be just beneath it. :/

avatar

Piran

2

Ignore my last reply about my post not showing, haha! :P

Yeah, I agree with everything you had to say about the song! Some youngsters these days think that they can gain satisfaction out of being revolting, which is very saddening to see.

Only just saw this, haha, but thanks mate! :D

I generally agree with how you rated each of the new entries, although both 'Breaking Me' & 'Gooba' would be a bit higher for me.

Funny you should mention about that, because I just notice an interesting coincidence in the lyrics between those two #1's that share the same name...

Post Malone: "Ayy, act a fool on stage, prolly leave my f**kin' show in a cop car."

DaBaby: "Brand new Lamborghini, f**k a cop car."

Excellent review Piran, as usually. Totally agree with u. British pop music has always been catalogued as the best worldwide, instead of supporting so many good pop songs and artists out there, you (as Britain a I mean) support this non development monkey. Unbelievable

Not only is he spamming this thread with the same comment, but he's essentially saying that all trap music should be eliminated from the chart! :/

"Rockstar" is stupid, do you know if less people streamed that song, "Say So" and "Toosie Slide" than "Stuck With U" then it would of debited at No.1 and I am mad that is was not No.1 so no I was not happy about that No.1

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

0

Come on Josh, you proved your point. Also, Ariana’s past songs have been expected to go to #1 but fell down, and at least Rain On Me got to #1 after all. But Stuck With U actually did hit #1 in America though.

also dont get mad but i like rockstar

avatar

Joshua Sombra

2

I know but as "Stuck With U" is a charity single it kinda feels disappointing that it was not on No.1. I didn't even stream the song the first seven days it came out and I feel bad because maybe I should of streamed it the first seven days to get it to No.1 which might of not been on No.1 anyway. What do you think?

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

0

Yeah, to be honest I thought that it would get to #1 in the end, but I guess some people forgot it was a charity single, which is weird since two charity singles went to #1 beforehand. But you have a point too.

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

Just kicking myself that I actually thought it was going to be No.1 as I didn't stream the first seven days before it went to the charts the first week. I know that I forgot it was a charity single the first few days since the release and then I realised the day after that it was a charity single. Just also confused about how many streams were needed for it to stay on No.1, but I don't think it would of been No.1 anyway as I said. Also, it doesn't sound like a No.1 in my opinion. I wanted that song to be No.1 and it is unfair. Was there enough streams for it to be on No.1 with or without me streaming it? I am mad that I didn't stream it the first 7 days since the release because I wonder if I was responsible for not making it No.1. I am so confused about this. Second of all I don't get why some people forgot that this song was a charity single in the UK and how did most people know this was a charity single in America (As it was No.1)? Just that it wasn't No.1 in the UK. Sorry if I repeated myself a lot. I know you are sick of it.

I don’t think it would have stayed at #1. But I don’t think it’s just you being responsible for not making it #1. Streams tend to fall off depending on the song. But hey, #4 is still a great result to me.

It’s okay, you don’t need to apologise for repeating yourself. You’re allowed an opinion. :)

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

Yes it is alright the song being on No.4 which is fine I guess. If I would take a guess why it was No.1 in America, I would say that it is because they are the most affected country of this pandemic and the song relates to everyone in America right now and obviously every other country as well. In the UK, it was not a great representation of the song relating to everyone in this country. I mean if everyone seemed to know that this was a charity single in the UK then maybe it would of remained No.1. I mean people tend to listen to a charity single to make it go on No.1 but I think they knew it is an important cause right now. I think they were not bothered as much anymore to stream this which makes me wonder "Why?" We are basically in the same situation and people needed to stream this song to No.1 because this pays respects to the charity which is working very hard at the moment to help children at the time of this crisis and. It was great it was No.1 at some point but I just wished it was actually No.1 and yes it is disappointing and the artists needed this song to be No.1 in the UK. But you know what, Ariana Grande also re-released a single as a charity single called "One Last Time" which narrowly missed No.1 in 2017 so I guess it isn't the first time that one of her charity singles missed No. 1. But anyway, thanks for the reply because I just wanted to know because tbh after reading your reply and what I wrote, it doesn't really phase me now that it isn't on No.1 and you wonder that most charity singles go on No.1. I appreciate your reply. Thanks.

hey Piran was flirting with the idea if us all should create a group chat on telegram,WhatsApp or something where we could do chart discussions etc, would just be easier and we everyone in the group could chat whilst the chart is being aired live. also what's your thoughts on Rockstar at number 1. Also I expected Stuck With U to Be higher like number #3 or #2 but in all honesty Rockstar had been top on streams since Tuesday. overall charts have been exciting these past weeks but yet again ACR ruining it.

Hey Jamie! :)
