BRITs nominations 2024: RAYE, J Hus, Dave, Central Cee and Olivia Dean lead nominees list

Time for me to flick through the BRITs nominees and decipher who I think is gonna win. Because it certaintly ain't me, that's for sure.

Song Of The Year​

In a chart with more hits than a nuclear bombsite, it seems too churlish to pick sides. But my hopes and dreams lie with either Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris, RAYE, or PinkPantheress, given they're the only ones I actually LIKE. Pretty sure I forgot entirely about that Stormzy song though.

Best New Artist​

The only ACTUALLY new artists here are Olivia Dean and Yussuf Hayes, but they don't really have a prayer. I'm betting for RAYE, even though she's had hits for 7 YEARS. 'Cos I guess Escapism is some sort of Year Zero for music or something.

Artist Of The Year​

Only 4 of the 10 artists here have released LPs in 2023, and Arlo Parks is virtually hitless. But given it will probably go to Dua Lipa, I would absolutely be over the moon if it went to J Hus or Jessie Ware. Even though J Hus doesn't show up for awards ceremonies, and Ms. Ware also hasn't charted in the Top 40 for yonks.

Group Of The Year

This one's just a mess. It might go to Chase & Status, but I would jump for joy if it went to Young Fathers. Blur are a bit too old for this, Jungle's album didn't really work, and K-TRAP and Headie One are not a group. Don't fool me, BRITs.

International Group Of The Year​

If critical acclaim had an influence, then boygenius would've won this before I even finished typing. However, with how many times the Foo Fighters have won this award, they might as well write their victory speech right now.

Best Dance Act​

Never the best award, really. I can't believe they've nominated Barry Can't Swim. Despite Fred Again.. having cartwheeled his dance noodlings into easy Top 20 contention for the past 6 months, you can just tell it will go to Becky Hill. Even though I liked Disconnect.

Best R&B Act​

No competition here, RAYE's storming this. Jorja Smith might nick it, but there's no way in a million years that Mahalia and Cleo Sol are gonna be victorious. Also, pretty sure SAULT is a producer. Am I wrong? Probably. But he shouldn't win.

Best Alternative/Rock Act​

It feels written in the script that the winner here will be The Rolling Stones, but you know what they say. When there's a will, there's a way. And the BRITs might just hand it over to Bring Me The Horizon. Even though they'll probably never win anything.

Best Hip-hop/Grime/Rap Act​

Sheesh. How many genres are you trying to encompass here, BRITs? This seems slightly wrong to call this award by that name. But yeah, Dave's winning this. No doubt about it.

Best Pop Act​

They might as well give it to Dua Lipa, given how Dance The Night got snubbed in the Oscar nominations, and Houdini is fast becoming 'The Hit That Cried Wolf'. I mean come on, why is Olivia Dean here? Are the mums bankrolling her?

Best International Artist

Taylor Swift is winning this. Alright? I don't care how amazing O-Rod's album was, or Kylie's Top 10 avengeance, or the fact they've nominated Asake, CMAT and Caroline Polachek, if you can pretty much perform your tour as some sort of American financial service, you're gonna win this award.

International Song Of The Year​

Good luck picking the winner here. I don't know about this one, hmm... Maybe I'll go for Doja Cat? Or Miley Cyrus? Maybe it'll go to Jazzy? Or what about David Kushner? AAAGH!!! IT'S TOO DIFFICULT!!!!!

Album Of The Year

Ah yes. The most important award. RAYE didn't reach No.1 with this in a year where EVERYBODY topped the albums, J Hus probably won't turn up, Little Simz dropped her's out of nowhere, so not her, erm... And Blur in 2023 are DEFINITELY NOT the type of band you want your kids to emulate, given they're pretty much the 21st Century Joy Division at this point. So I'll go with Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers. Great songs, great live presence, and I Saw is the theme tune to Final Score in my country. So I have to choose this.

I'm gonna be wrong with every single one of these, aren't I? ._.
