It ain't fair that only 3 songs of Dojas are charting. OCC should allow any song of the same artist to chart. They shouldn't care what other people say. If they say it is unnecessary, tough. They have got to understand it is wrong that 'You Right' went out of the Top 100 at #25. I won't stop complaining until they change that. The singles chart is meant to showcase all of the songs that have been listened to the most. There should be no ACR which ruins chart performance. They should just leave it even when it declines. So that is another thing I won't stop complaining about until they ditch it. The public shouldn't care about the rules. The rules were better before ACR and 3-song Rule. People need to understand that they shouldn't have been pressed about those old rules. It would be great if the rules went back to normal before the last Ed Sheeran album bomb and before ACR (started about September 2017). So the public has to understand that ACR and 3-song rule shouldn't exist. I know the album bombs sucked but it was the most streamed stuff. People don't complain about album bombs in the US so don't be in the UK. I would there to be more album bombs in the UK. We will see when Ed's new album comes out. People shouldn't complain on the comments. They have to keep it to themselves.

So can someone tell me how many individual streams per song it takes to reach number 100 on the official chart?

The reason I ask is because then someone has the terrible complicated mathematical task of working out how many streams is needed for number 99, and 98, and so on and so on.

Surely it was easier in the days of physical sales?

My argument is in the days of physical sales, music had to be current, because it was down to what the record company released as singles, invariably new material

But with streaming technically anything obscure could become a hit single, even an album track from the 70's could be number 1 if enough people streamed it.

But how is that bringing on new talent compared to how the industry was?

I remember when downloading mp3's became legal and to be allowed into influencing the charts and thinking omg this is a mistake, but it ruduced piracy as illegal file sharing dropped off as it was cheap to download a whole album or individual tracks and put them on an mp3 player.

But who would ever think for a cheap subscription we could have access to the world's library of music via apps like Spotify, Deezer?

More than we ever need if we only care to admit it. To me surely its better to concentrate on the artists we love to listen to and support them, a bit like a football fan supports their team right? Why are we watering everything down to an industry that frezzes out other potential?

Yet the chart system currently has catered everything around for the teenager, but why are we doing that?

Simple, just make a stream a whole sale. 🤭

And nothing else you mentioned is ever a problem...

Can I just ask a simple question? Although I understand it might not revolve around a simple answer.
How do the kind of artists we see in the current top 100 official charts gain popularity?
Most of them I have never heard of and I always got a radio on.
Its as if the industry is working in reverse and the only time they are played is after they are already in the charts.
Whereas normally to get exposure to the song it relied on radio or television exposure to get people into it and buy it.
I browse the top 100 today and basically dont recognise any of the artists apart from a few house hold names like Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, The Weeknd. Thats it!
And I always got a radio on, and follow music to a certain extent although mostly not so much in the last 10 years, not new stuff anyway.
I used to religiously follow the charts, and loved the chart show when it was on Sunday afternoons on Radio 2.
But it quickly went downhill when it transfered to Radio 1 as their younger audience quickly influenced the charts which is obvious when you think about it that this would happen but it cut out the older audience quite quickly, in fact over night.
But streaming pushed things over the cliff even further. Because fans like me wouldn't touch streaming so how can an artist that I follow ever have a hit ever again, so something needs to be done. And quick before the whole industry implodes in on itself.

DK

Dave Knight

-2

Seems like no one knows how the artists in the official singles charts gain initial exposure?

avatar

⁉️

3

It’s easy, you’re just behind. 🥱

Also, with that last paragraph, you really just don’t like change, just because an artist you like can’t have hits anymore doesn’t mean streaming is wrong. 😭

avatar

⁉️

3

Streaming...

DK

Dave Knight

-2

No its happening to artists I dont like too, its just that I happen to notice the way streaming dominates the official singles charts is an inaccurate way to see how fans listen to music.
Explain this, how can a single be number 1 in the official download charts, yet not be inside the top 100 official single charts?
Something has to be wrong here?

avatar

Keybasher

1

It was on Radio 1 when it was on a Sunday afternoon. The same station it's been on since 1967, previously on the Light Programme before that. The younger audience have always dominated the charts, even back when it was sales as they have the most free time and money.

Sales are calculated into the chart still, the artists you follow can have hits by selling a tonne of singles as downloads to outweigh the streaming (the BTS model).

avatar

Keybasher

2

Because the number of people downloading music is insignificant compared to the number of people streaming. For context a song has to be streamed 150 or 300 times to count as one single sale for the chart in a week. No individual is listening to a song that much, so that's a few dozen different people listening to make up one sale. They have to choose to listen to it, it can just auto play at them.

Everything in the chart system is set up to discentive streaming, but the sheer number of people streaming has now reached the critical mass where it can't be destroyed.

Hey people! I cba to change my pfp so just imagine it’s the Happier Than Ever album cover. What a lot to say.

First off, I didn’t expect to see ‘Psycho’ by Maisie Peters still in the top 100, that’s awesome! Such a fire song! Interesting also to see ‘Stop This Flame’ still on chart, although MK is a genius and the remix is fire.

Lovely also to see ‘Love Again’ peak, whilst Levitating really needs to F off now, not only because of the DaBaby thing (which is the main reason tbf) but also because if Levitating starts to flop we may get the new Dua era sooner.

Speaking of new eras, I’m excited to see what The Weeknd will do next, following his recent tweets.

Finally, ‘Happier Than Ever’ is already proving to be one of my favourite songs of the year (based on first week listening, not overall). The album, on the other hand, proved to be fairly meh in the shadow of WWAFA, but it has some fire tunes, such as ‘NDA’, ‘Therefore I Am’, ‘Lost Cause’, and one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life ‘My Future’ (Do note that all of these songs were released beforehand and usually Billie songs need a while to grow on me anyway).

Have a nice week peeps :)

It would've been nice to see some Slipknot and ZZ Top tracks returning to the chart after what's happened this week R.I.P., Joey Jordison and Dusty Hill

DK

Dave Knight

3

Here here, probably won't happen though as ZZ Top fans dont stream, not sure about Slipknot.

avatar

Carl Mefkintallica Foxall

2

Never thought about that

DK

Dave Knight

-3

Its a shame but streaming is killing music.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Its because the format streaming if you can call it a format, it favours a younger audience, or I should say a younger audience prefers streaming. Hence why I think the integrity and diversity of music is dead today in the charts. The whole top 100 is built from youngsters streaming. Only a very very small contribution from downloads impact the charts and and even smaller impact is felt from the physical product. But obviously people like myself aged 50 and above would prefer to buy the physical single.

avatar

Carl Mefkintallica Foxall

1

I'm 51 meself and have noticed for several years that the charts completely nowadays There used to be a time when metal bands, hard rock bands and indie rock bands were always in the top 40 but not now which explains why it's been FIFTEEN years since Iron Maiden's last top 40 single and that's a long time for them

DK

Dave Knight

1

I agree, but not just Maiden, countless rock bands only get hit albums these past 15 years or so. The way the system favours streaming has frozen out certain artists from having a hit single. But I will say not just Rock and Metal, a lot of what we might call older artists are frozen out now. I remember a time you would have a country artist like Glen Campbell, in the same top 40 as Motorhead, or Status Quo would be a few places up from Chas and Dave, we really have lost all this diversity.

avatar

Keybasher

0

Over time this is likely to return though as streaming becomes the dominant format again.

avatar

Carl Mefkintallica Foxall

-1

Plus we now have songs not released as singles charting on the so called singles chart therefore the OCC need to change the rules again

DK

Dave Knight

1

To be honest its a complete mess to me now. I grew up really enjoying following the charts. The only thing streaming has achieved is its almost made piracy non existant.
But I dont see the point in subscribing to Spotify or something just to gain access to a library of artists that sound awful. Most of the songs are streamed at an awful quality.
I would rather buy the CD or vinyl so I can play it over and over without the need for the internet.

avatar

Damián

1

Agree

avatar

Damián

0

Absolutely, same happens to Kylie Minogue, she cant chart a single inside the top ten since 2018, mainly because most of her fans don't stream and just keep buying records

DK

Dave Knight

1

Exacty Dami, there are quite a few artists like it if you dig deeper, Katy Perry was one that surprised me, Rita Ora, even one of the Harry Styles ones, oh and Madonna the queen of pop. Dont get me wrong Im not a fan of the singers I just mentioned, but it is through casual interest I have observed this going on a lot now. It actually makes you wonder who is actually streaming in their millions towards one song, yet that artist is relatively unknown, well to me anyway. It used to be a case of an artist was known and got to be liked, and rarely had a fail due to their status. To me its all so fickle now its unreal. Im glad I grew up in the era I did, 70's and 80's. Some of the 90's was great too.

DK

Dave Knight

1

The whole system is ageist and unfair, artists are not even being paid properly via streaming. It needs a big shake up!

avatar

Damián

1

Absolutely agree with you Dave. I'm 47 and been a chart fan since my 14's and always enjoyed the diversity that every artist could chart a song no matter her/his style of music, as you mentioned too. If the song was good and a hit it could be top ten, 5 or 1. Nowadays, you have plenty of hits that even crack the top 100 cos their artists arent popular on streaming platforms or even worse, in tik tok. That's the way these artists still rule in the albums charts. It's a shame

DK

Dave Knight

0

It is a shame because it highlights the fact an artist like Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, etc etc can storm in at number 1 in the albums charts because they still have an enormous fan base, but the fact its number 1 is via physical sales, yet their singles wont get a look in on the official charts because streaming is dominating the whole top 100. Older fans are not going to mess about streaming, like myself I like to collect the artists material to be able to hold it and look at it. I wonder if our type of era will ever come back?

DK

Dave Knight

1

Exactly, there are lots of artists that this has affected to be honest, more than I can even think about. I fail to see how streaming benefits the record industry, because if their artists are not seeming popular by failing to have at least the occasional hit single, why is that a good thing? In the old days if you had 3 or more flops in a row they would drop you.
I cant see how someone can subscribe to Spotify for example for a pittance to access a library of artists and the record companies and artists are making the same money as their physical sales, its impossible in my opinion.
In fact artists are already complaining because it takes literally tens of thousands of streams just by one track to get it into the top 100, but how are older fans going to even get close to that?
To put it bluntly who the heck is sat there streaming in their millions towards one song? It begs the question are they not listening to anyrhing else? There is only so much time in the day or night.
When I was young I listened to the whole album, not just one track.

Very disappointed that "Seventeen Going Under" by Sam Fender is now down 8 places to no 70, and only reached no 44.
This is a great song from a very talented new artist.
I just guess just like a lot of talented people, we don't want a download or streaming.
We want the record in our hands.
This is why The Album Charts are so different, cause we can have The Album in our hands.
Going to see Arlo Parks next Thursday, another great new artist who can't get a hit single.
I hate The Singles Charts in The last 15 Years, they have killed off a lot of artists and bands and mean s nothing these days.

that’s what happens with most rock and indie artists and bands, their fans don’t tend to stream them, instead they just want a purchased copy like a cd single. that’s why they’re more successful on the albums chart.

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

3

oh yes, the album was amazing!! 😻

avatar

electrix

4

i havent heard half of the songs on the chart so i cant really comment on it hahaha... doja is doing sm better there than shes doing here in america and i love it! i like that industry baby could reach the top 10 next week, and idm the new camila song either 😅😅

avatar

Piran

4

I was actually really disappointed with ‘Don’t Go Yet’ sadly! Yeah, it’s okay, but I expected something amazing coming from one of my favourite artists of all-time & this is nothing compared to some of her biggest hits. :/

I agree with you on the Doja tracks & ‘Industry Baby’ though!

M

who is that fav artist of all time from you then?

avatar

Keybasher

2

Dave casually showing his place as the UK's biggest rapper whilst collabing with Stormzy.... no comment needed.

Hoped talk about might have climbed a bit higher, Stay seems to be getting a bit of a massive lift at the minute, next weeks no 1? Industry Baby could do well.

The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber topped global Spotify today for the first time since "Stay" released. 3rd week No. 1 Australia. ❤️
