So great to see Katy Perry almost fall off the chart completely. Absolutely deserved after crawling back to work with Dr. Luke

Chart Review 26/07/24

Does anyone know Mongolian for The Official UK Top 40?

Sorry, just preparing for the opening ceremony of the Olympics that just started. Personally, I don't get why the Parade of Nations is making everybody stand on their own boats in the River Seine, but you know, it's a change from the usual sit around and watch the fireworks trope. The nominees for the Mercury Prize were announced yesterday as well. Whoever thought Cat Burns was a better candidate than the likes of IDLES, Elbow, Declan McKenna, Bring Me The Horizon and the Pet Shop Boys is quite clearly on a mission to anger my very soul. There was no point giving her a gong, and yet they've gone ahead and ruined it for me. Still, at least Charli XCX and The Last Dinner Party have been put on the running order. Either one of them winning would be grand, thanks.

Speaking of grand, stuff has finally occured in the Top 40 this week. And by stuff, I mean that great chart leveller of a rule system, ACR. Good old Accelerated Chart Ratio has swung the way of more names than you thought there'd be, and it's caused a right riot. Post Malone, Michael Marcagi, Mark Ambor, Shaboozey, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift (FINALLY). They are all ejected from the charts faster than the inevitable collaboration between Liam Gallagher and Jung Kook that is bound to happen in 2029. Only a matter of time.

The ACR also includes Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter, and inevitably plummets to 9th place, thus leaving us with a brand new No.1. Except, of course, it isn't. Please Please Please is back in pole position again. Just a riot, ain't it. The ACR shenanigans have now elevated Billie Eilish to 2nd with BIRDS OF A FEATHER, proof that not everything she releases fades away rapidly (her other hits hitting you-know-what is testament to this song's success), Chappell Roan is now the 3rd most loved woman in America AND the world (HOT TO GO! powering into the Top 20 for the first time helps as well), and Myles Smith continues his run as the unlikeliest British hero you'll see all year, Stargazing creeping it's way into the Top 5. But enough about them.

You're here for the 7 new hits. And shock horror, barely any of them are much to shout about.

Going in at 4 after probably some of the most ABUSIVE, UNFAIR, and INEXCUSABLE fan-stanning I think I've ever seen (he had the top NINE spots on the iTunes chart at one point) is BTS solo boy Jimin, who seems to be undergoing some sort of identity crisis at the moment. Okay, so Like Crazy went Top 10 last year after similar circumstances, and only Jung Kook eclipses him in the solo stakes, but boy is his work forgettable and dull. Who is hardly the song to get our rocks off either. I mean, we get it, he's trying to stand out, but he could at least make some original music. Why is he desperately trying to ape Enrique Iglesias here? I don't get it. His fanbase clearly forgot to buy new album MUSE, his new kinda-short LP flopping at 56.

Also hailing from the Korean market are 8-piece Seoul hopefuls Stray Kids, a gang of individuals who are virtual unknowns outside of their native market, and probably deserve to as well. They've had 3 Top 100 appearances in the past. None of them got any higher than No.97, despite hiring Charlie Puth for one of their singles. You can forget about that now, as new LP ATE limps to 62, new single Chk Chk Boom does far better than anyone really was expecting to be honest, powering it's way to No.30 this week. Maybe because the video has Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in it. That may have something to do with their first Top 40 hit. Just a cinch.

And while we're on the topic of solo stars, it hasn't really been all smiles for Little Mix, has it? Jesy is a 1-hit wonder, Leigh-Anne fell apart faster than a tower of Jenga, and the less said about Perrie's "career" the better. Safe to say Jade Thirlwell has to hope and pray that the public don't forget about her then. Oh, I'm sorry. I meant JADE. Wouldn't want to confuse her with the 90s girl group of the aame name would we? Debut single Angel Of My Dreams is a curious beast. It starts dreary, then takes a hard left down Charli XCX avenue, and then crashes right back into dreariness. I mean, if you're gonna stand out, then that is one way to do it. Her No.7 positions is actually legitimate, helped by desperately trying to stay in the Spotify Top 20 all week, even if, again, you couldn't move for the amount of iTunes support it has. OK, so the song is still bad like all the other solo projects, and it definitely isn't song of the summer, no matter how many people tell you otherwise, but at least she's trying. And in this market, that's a huge relief.

Elsewhere in this mad chart, BL3SS has shot up to 13, so excuse me while I prepare my Evangelion kit for the end of the world. Jordan Adetunji is now Top 20 worthy, which I guess is a relief. Adam Port and his gang of merrily DJs have risen 14 spots, again, evidence that not all dance music deserves the dumpster. And as 360 divides itself by 20 and climbs the rankings, yet another BRAT song gets some love. Apple is another shot of dopamine in the stale works that is the UK music scene, showing off just why everyone loves her so so much. Even new US presidential hopeful Kamala Harris. No, I don't get it either. Album cuts getting some love is a term I can also give to Brand New Dance by Eminem, which pops up at 38 thanks to Renaissance doing literally nothing in it's 2nd week, and given Habits drops 25 today, that's hardly a shock. His album at least spends a 2nd week at the summit, stopping Olivia Rodrigo's 20th deluxe edition release of GUTS, and SOFT PLAY (formely known as Slaves) with their latest shout-a-thon. Oh, and Los Campesinos are at 14. Genuinely don't know how that's happened, but props to them. Why they never hit the Top 100 is beyond me.

Also new is Dominic Fike proving he ain't a 1-hit wonder with misses rising to 34, and Majestic proving why he should never ever be aloud to make dance music ever again, charting with a re-working of Celine Dion's 2002 mid-table snooze I'm Alive, now titled Set My Heart On Fire, at No.40. There's also new chart entries from Billie Eilish, IRAH, and your man Childish Gambino, but I don't have any time left to talk about this. Next week is an utter mess though. Expect an absolute bloodbath between Jorja Smith, Halsey, Central Cee, and the 612th collab between Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding. Sit tight folks. I'm off to wonder why Lady Gaga is trying to be French.

Other than number one being a stupid rubber bander again caused by these rubbish 0.5 divisions maths and ACR/SCR the banes of the UK Chart which ruins it fixing the Top 10 results to the same old tracks all the time making it all a big fiddle doing the same thing on British Asian as well which shows us these rules do not work for us anymore as it makes us sick and tired of all our favorite tracks permanently after 1 month of being on this chart.

Charts is one thing I'll be happy on them to bring in the AI for as these people on the end of this is hopeless not even using real results in their chart even well I don't think they do because how is 2 digit millions beating the billions in here.

Even if in the interest of fairness they are leveling up all the 5 hits to million hits into being one 1 billion themselves with division and times reverse engineering to the official number something is still off about where everything is landing due to 0.5 maths and ACR/SCR rules which say they make it fairer but in fact rob it from the proper winners.

We have no Loose Control in a robbery and now we have no Tipsy in a robbery leveling up is fair I have no issue with a 5 views Heritage track which is actually a very good track that deserves more beating a billions but when it's only 2 and 3 digit higher millions and billions divisions facing each other like in the main chart there doesn't need to be any leveling up maybe leveling down taking sales away to force the rubberbanding away but the mainstream one no leveling up any.

A lot of big songs going on ACR this week! 😳

It was definitely needed to freshen up the chart though, even if ‘Austin’ is somehow still avoiding and I feel that ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ went on it too early. Pleasantly surprised to see ‘Set My Heart On Fire’ breaking through!

Glad that ‘Red Wine Supernova’ returned to the Top 40 but why we did have to bring ‘Birds In The Sky’ back with it? :/

Madison Beer’s latest single unfortunately nowhere to be seen.

I don’t understand how she isn’t a bigger artist tbh. She has a ton of charisma, smooth yet compelling vocals, and often has a good eye for production.

Yeah, can we please not keep her a one-hit wonder? 😔

Sabrina replacing herself at #1 yet again is impressive, but I’m already tired of ‘Please Please Please’.
