Yeah, good list here. Mahmood cool but that ain't gonna sell here (UK) sadly. Old man Billy J is starting to grow on me. Norah Jones song is a dream, Charli XCX always good. Nice to see Libertines make your list.

Everybody go STREAM, BUY, DOWNLOAD !!! her most popular songs are 212, Luxury, 1991, liquorice, which all charted YEARS AGO

Why is that awful stick song going down so slowly?

I had to ban it from the yaer 6 singing club this week, I told them as it's such a terrible song. They were annoyed at first but happily replaced it with Taylor Swift :)

Glasto ZZzzzzzzzz (although cool for SZA despite whatever the the daily mail says!! )

And as an AI interpretation of Principal Skinner once uttered ad infinitum, 'Now, time to get to work'. And by that I mean my personal rankings.

YEAH THESE ARE MINT TIER:

The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters [31] (Ah well... It was fun while it lasted. Just don't be 1-hit wonders, k?)

Beyoncé - TEXAS HOLD 'EM [1] (Savour it, 'cause it's not gonna be top again.)

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [15] (She's cursed. Cursed I tell you.)

SUPERB FOR A GOOD WHILE TIER:

Noah Kahan & Sam Fender - Homesick [33]

YG Marley - Praise Jah In The Moonlight [11]

RAYE - Worth It [34]

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [30]

THESE LOT GET MY HOPES UP TIER:

Charli XCX - von dutch [39] (Has she seen the charts? She certainly ain't No.1)

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [6]

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [36]

RAYE ft. 070 Shake - Escapism. [21]

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [10] (Go lower, I dare you.)

ERM...... YES??? I GUESS?? TIER:

21 Savage - redrum [24]

SZA - Saturn [23] (You know, seeing her headline Glasto this year wasn't on my bingo card for 2024.)

Yung Filly - Grey [35]

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [7]

Djo - End Of Beginning [4]

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - CARNIVAL [8]

WELL THIS IS AWKWARD TIER:

4batz/Drake - act ii: date @ 8 [18]

Dua Lipa - Training Season [9]

Tate McRae - greedy [26]

Dasha - Austin [25]

Ariana Grande - we can't be friends (wait for your love) [3]

Pozer - Kitchen Stove [22]

Ariana Grande - bye [13]

Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners - Evergreen [37] (Maybe I'd like it more if it wasn't 86 seconds long.)

THIS IS NOT GOOD TIER:

Tate McRae - exes [28]

cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada [27]

Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? [16] (The physical release drags this down about 10 places.)

Ella Henderson ft. Rudimental - Alibi [12] (Almost forgot this fell out the Top 10.)

REMOVE THESE SONGS IN AN INSTANT TIER:

Becky Hill & Sonny Fodera - Never Be Alone [32] (Thanks for the fall, jerks.)

Michael Marcagi - Scared To Start [14]

Bryson Tiller - Whatever She Wants [17]

Good Neighbours - Home [29]

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [40]

VERY VERY INSUFFERABLE TIER:

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [38] (So I guess ACR is irrelevant for this tune then?)

Kygo & Ava Max - Whatever [20] (I should be glad this is never going Top 10.)

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [5] (Wait, he went up one? HOW!?)

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things [2] (Wow Benson. How can you possibly be worse than this jock.)

Chart Review 15/03/24

Do you ever look back on the past with a hint of good fortune? If you thought today's regular outings of royalty-free sampling, dull as dishwater rapping, and "sincere" balladry was enough to make you lot want to put your head on the guillotine, you could do a lot worse than what our ancestors had to go through. There they were, back in 2011, dealing with so much hi-NRG pop it was ridiculous, pouring scorn on anyone who had the temerity to get a Top 40 single and treating albums like Born To Die by Lana Del Rey and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto as if someone had stolen all their prized possessions and threw them into Chernobyl. You wonder how they feel about the state of music in 2024, knowing that no matter how boring Kanye West sounds nowadays, he can't be any worse than the work of Teddy Swims and Kygo, can he?

2011 was also the year when Beyoncé was busy headlining Glastonbury, and ushering in that new craze where pop artists actually take events like this seriously, instead of Michael Eavis getting bored and hiring Radiohead again. 13 years later and she's still got it to the shock of nobody at all, narrowly making it 4 weeks at the summit with TEXAS HOLD 'EM. I say narrowly, 'cause Spotify has now suddenly preferred Djo's End Of Beginning as the popular tune of choice, Queen Bey now at the unlikely position of 6 at this point in time. Her sequel to everyone's favourite 2022 disco-tinged LP now has the codename 'COWBOY CARTER' to set it apart from its predecessor, which is gonna be weird to say in future reviews, that's for sure.

Speaking of which, Dua Lipa (who announced new album Radical Optimism on Wednesday by barely surviving a shark attack, allegedly), Coldplay, and SZA are the headliners this time out. Honestly, I don't know how to feel about this. Yeah, I get to see the likes of PJ Harvey and LCD Soundsystem strut their stuff on national TV for a while, but really? No guitar-wielding attractions? (Coldplay don't qualify for this anymore) You picked Shania Twain for the legacy bit? I'm pretty sure she hasn't had a hit of note for 20 years! Was Madonna too busy trying to revolutionize pop again to notice?

The critics from 2011 will hardly be getting excited about the No.1 album this week either, even though Ariana Grande's first hit of note was chart-topping smash Problem. 10 years ago. (feel old yet? 😔) Since then, enough things of note (hugely successful singles, Mancunian tragedies, a permanent stay down lowercase avenue) means she' the level of popularity that requires her to hold the phone whenever Worthy Farm come calling, and new effort Eternal Sunshine is no different, casually strolling to the top of the albums despite not selling as much you think she should. Props to Judas Priest selling nearly 15K to get No.2 though. It's nice to see they're still having a good time.

The singles, meanwhile, pull their usual trick of scattering about wondering what the point of it all is, led by... Not the track you think, actually. Leading the way at 3 is a song called we can't be friends (wait for your love), yet another tirade against some dumped BF of hers that I couldn't care less about. It's also worse than yes, and?, which obviously means the TikTok generation are gonna show their lack of taste. That doesn't mean the album's highlight refuses to gain any love (even though you have to wait until Track 9 to hear it), as it shoots back into the Top 10 at No.6, while a third cut called 'bye' is at 13 for you to look at. And then promptly ignore. Either way, Ariana fell off in my books, despite the strong album reviews. There's only so much 90s disco I can take before my brain blows up.

I refuse to acknowledge the return of Billie Eilish's Oscar winning effort What Was I Made For? at 16, due to the fact it had a physical release. Bog off record labels, and stop trying to fix the charts in your favour.

The rest of the chart doesn't really give me much hope, if the other 3 new hits are anything to go by. Biggest non-Grande debutant this week is definitely hip and absolutely not awful rapper 4batz, whose song date ii: act @ 8 tore up Spotify's Viral 50 like it was concealing a pipebomb under it, given it now has over 90 million streams on the site. Of course, none of them were over here, but clearly somebody noticed this success and has spurred it into the charts. So yeah, here comes what is potentially the worst title for a hit in 2024, date ii: act @ 8, debuting at 18. Blame Drake. Blame him for as many things as possible.

As we all know by now, country is very much a going concern this decade, if the massive success of Luke Combs, Zach Bryan and Morgan Wallen is anything to go by. Hopefully attempting to join them in the popularity stakes is chart debutant Dasha, who put out current album What Happens Now last month only for this song to go mental on TikTok, proving that line dancing is very much not dead. Maybe Steps and Billy Ray Cyrus had a point. Anyways, Austin debuted at 81 a couple weeks back, shot to 57 last time out, and can now be found at 25 on the UK best-sellers. Just don't take note of her Spotify bio, given it's just country with the 'o'. You can probably guess why she did this. Ask your cousins, they'll probably know.

Charli XCX slips to 39, yet another single cruelly ignored by the public at large, but 37 sees the first appearance of a song that's gotten on everyone's nerves for months and months. Seattle folkies Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners put out a low-key album in 2017 called RMCM, released a couple more for the next few years, then promptly vanished as it seemed that no one would give 'em any love. At least, not until TikTok got hold of it. Track 1 on RMCM was a song called Evergreen, and probably showed why they didn't have much hope beforehand, given there's only 1 verse, no chorus, and it stop after 86 paltry seconds. About a year ago it first peetered onto the Top 100, and since then it's been seemingly stuck in the lower half ever since, oblivious to the fact that I can't find any reason why it's so popular. Apart from TikTok, obvs. Then suddenly it ended up at 41 last week, and now it's creeped to 37, and now what you can hear in the background is the sound of the charts suffering for the next few years. No one was asking for anther Heat Waves by Glass Animals situation, but unfortunately that seems to be the case. RMCM are still releasing stuff, new song Sierra Vista came out yesterday, but they know more than anyone Evergreen is gonna be the biggest albatross to ever rest on their necks. And they'll never shake it off.

Jungle winning a BRIT suddenly means Back On 74 is back at 43, and I am currently typing this with a massive smile on my face. FE!N by Travis Scott is at 41, so expect that in the 40 next week, Madison Beer suddenly goes back up to 53, Clavish and Fredo limp to 70, Gracie Abrams make her first chart dent at 81, Jax Jones is back to terrorise my life at 86, Galantis crawls to 96 as dull as ever, and Twenty One Pilots are clearly not long-stayers, as Overcompensate tumbles to 92 against my will, your will, and everybody else's will.

Arriving at your streaming sites today include Justin Timberlake's new album, which hasn't caused a critical furore after his off-putting 2018 projections, so maybe he'll top the albums. Assuming the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Caity Baser, Kid Kapichi and The Black Crowes don't stop him, of course. The singles, meanwhile, sees BTS straggler V return, so my next Friday's instantly ruined, but there's also ZAYN trying to stay relevant, Dermot Kennedy being boring, Kenya Grace struggling to prevent her 1-hit wonder status, and Cardi B having a go again. None of which is really giving me any optimism for next week.

So yeah, that's that. There was an announcement this week that Perrie from Little Mix has a solo single ready to unleash, following in the footsteps of 1-hit wonder Jesy, and 1-hit wonder Leigh-Anne. Unfortunately, that song is co-written by Ed Sheeran. I'm starting to think the people from 2011 may have had a point. G'bye.

(P.S. There's no P.S. message this week. I don't have anything to say to you that you don't already know about. I mean, come on, why do I keep sticking these on at the end every single time? It's clear to me that my personal preferences stink, so why do I keep adding them? Ok, maybe I did have something to say.)

WWIMF got a streaming boost due to the Oscar’s too. It likely would’ve missed the top 40 if not for that

Oof at ‘Overcompensate’ taking such a big second week drop. I like it a lot now and it would've been upgraded if it actually stuck around.

Pleased to see ‘Austin’ going viral at least and I’m curious to check out more of Dasha’s music based on this!

I know ‘FE!N’ got an official music video, but I didn’t expect it to have this much of a resurgence in the past few weeks! I wouldn’t exactly be against this getting a second run in the Top 40 at all.

my music takeaway for the night:

  • beyonce keeping that number 1 slot is alright but i’m getting tired of it already. hoping djo catches enough steam to get there but it won’t be likely.
  • love to see ariana with that number 1 album though, with a much stronger album than her last. bye, supernatural, we can’t be friends and i wish i hated you were my favourites!
  • welcome back to fe!n and all, but carti needs to drop that album. how much longer, carti?
  • that 4batz tune was good but sounded incomplete - drake was the missing piece. great song and definitely one i’ll be playing on late nights.
  • welcome back, what was i made for?! so happy she won that oscar! i also predict never lose me will be back following the remix with glasto headliner sza and miss plastic surgery.
  • speaking of glastonbury, SAMPHA! DANNY BROWN! AVRIL LAVIGNE! and more great names but them and sza are the best there.
  • i’m happy von dutch crashed but it isn’t crashing hard enough >_< and austin is completely unwelcome here (not you postie, we love you <3)
  • outside the charts, one of my favourite bands, good kid, dropped one of their best songs ever, and i’m off to see kid cudi live next year!
  • finally, happy 9th birthday to an album i cherish deeply: kendrick lamar’s to pimp a butterfly. every second of that album is perfect and the fact it’s 9 years old already is scary.

have a great weekend yall

Amazing to see ‘What Was I Made For?’ back in the Top 20 following the physical sales push and what appears to be a late ACR reset.

So happy that Billie won that Oscar last weekend and her performance of it alongside FINNEAS was absolutely stunning! 😊

I thought Ariana’s album was good overall and while it’s still not among the best in her discography, it’s definitely grown on me a fair bit since its release.

My favourite tracks were ‘Supernatural’, ‘I Wish I Hated You’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine’. Really hope the former in particular gets to chart in the near future because I absolutely loved it, including the Troye Sivan remix!

Well done to Beyoncé on her first single to spend a month at the top of the charts! ❤️

I’m surprised she’s never reached this milestone in the UK before, but better late than never, especially with a song as good as ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’. :)
