Epic, so glad to see HTE and Blue Weekend as part of the collection, and interesting to see 3 Kanye albums in the mix. Gorrilaz doesn't surprise me att all tho

I think basically to cut a long story short what the charts reflect now are what we were doing in the 70's and 80's when everytime our needle touched the vinyl record and we played the song we were into at that moment is the same as a play today on Spotify.
The only difference is once we spent our money on a single it didnt contribute to further chart positions regardless if we played it to death or not.
So that meant new material kept coming into the charts, keeping it much more exciting, and the turn over was more productive.
Hence why I think streaming has killed music as we know it. The charts are stagnant.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

The charts are stagnant these days of streaming and I will explain in my opinion why.
If we rewind when we actually bought a vinyl single or CD single and those formats reigned in the charts, fans bought a single they liked on a physical single and that was it, they didnt need to keep listening to it anywhere else they just played as often as they wanted to the vinyl single or whatever which meant there was room for something new to keep entering the charts
Very rarely did a single last for 11 weeks such as Ed Sherran has recently done because most people have heard it on the radio and bought it by now.
But in the world of streaming these days people seem to only use streaming platforms to listen to music via apps like Spotify so compared to playing something thats already purchased they keep a song on loop on Spotify and this happens all over the country keeping a song in the charts for a ridiculously long time outstaying its welcome compared to keeping the charts fresh as they used to be and should be.
And I think this seriously needs to be looked into and adjusted in some way.
That coupled with the fact streaming alienates older artists from having hits in the first place has made in my opinion the charts a sadder place. And I been following the pop charts for over 45 years. And the last 5 or 6 years I'd say has been unbearable to try and follow or get enthusiastic about.

avatar

afrog

2

You do realise only 10 streams per person per day are contributed to the chart? And some people pay for Spotify premium? And 60 people would have to stream the same song 10 times to get 1 chart unit, which is equivalent to 1 sale = 1 chart unit. Not everyone can afford to buy music, not everyone wants to. This just shows steaming is popular and needs to be included in an 'official' chart.

avatar

1

“streaming alienates older artists from having hits in the first place”... sorry dave, but i couldn’t disagree with you more.

in recent memory we’ve seen abba, an older group, claim two top 20 hits - one of them went top 10 - and they were big debuts on the spotify charts. they did drop off massively, sure, but they still got streamed a lot. , as of now, elton john is at number 4 on the spotify charts with a high amount of streams (316k) and he’s 74!

DK

Dave Knight

0

Yeah but ABBA are the biggest band in the world, I was expecting their new singles to be number 1. I think had they were released on physical formats they would be number 1 easily. I think number 9 was poor, and people were forced to stream the songs as their only way to listen to them, thats my belief anyway.
The only reason Elton is having a hit is by piggy backing off Dua Lipa. His solo hits dried up years ago.
In the physical age there was a quicker turn over of artists because once people bought the single they like they just play it ss much as they like, the sale has already done its job in terms of chart position, so they are already looking forward to next weeks releases.
Streaming has greatly slowed this process down from what I can see in the top 100, some of the songs have been hovering around there for months in some cases over a year simply because people are using Spotify etc as their player, which in the old days would have been someone's record player, or cd player, and then mp3 player.
It speaks for itself if you think about it, imagine if Spotify was the only place on earth to listen to music, the charts would just be an exaggeration of how its ended up now and become even more stagnant. Music as we know it would be dead and buried.
We need a healthier more balanced charts which includes other formats that are priced equally across the board.
Streaming is dominating other formats and alienating older artists via its cheap subscription.
Obviously the majority of people would opt for listening to music as cheaply as possible, but they are ripping off the artists they claim to be a fan of rather than buy their physical product. This also has been well documented by artists such as Nile Rogers, Simon LeBon, Roger Daltrey, just to name a few, all claiming that streaming is ripping off the artists.
Thats why I think it will kill off music completely very soon if a shake up isnt done soon.
They either need to make how we listen to streaming services priced more fairly and in line with physical formats, or greatly reduce the price of physical formats.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Yeah but that in itself is a joke. Why should a single need to be streamed which basically means played zillions of times just to contribute to a chart position cheaply or not?
Its obvious to me why a younger audience would jump on the bandwagon of a cheap service as you basically got an entire record shop at your disposal, but even if we lived to 200 years of age we wouldn't even scrape the surface of all the artists that exist or exist on Spotify. Of course we got the choice, but when I was growing up there was a quicker turn over of artists, yet personally I prefered to remain faithful to a a few artists probably 10 at the most at any given time to enjoy supporting their music, this sort of thing almost doesn't exist today. I say almost because older people like me are still like that. I still buy music from the artists that were around when I was young.
In my mind the way streaming is priced it should only be used as a pre cursor to something you might buy, like a trailer or teaser, sampler whatever. It actually blows my mind with anger how streaming is ever allowed to contribute to real official chart positions, I can not believe it, and thats being honest.
In my mind streaming isnt a million miles away from downloading songs illegally and those songs having their own chart. Simply because streaming is far too cheap, its like giving the music away for free, but why is that allowed to be involved in the official charts?
Who ever passed it?

avatar

Piran

1

Regarding the Elton point, I’m obviously really happy that he’s as high as #4 on Spotify, but if I’m being completely honest, there’s no way he would’ve been able to do it without Dua as a co-lead credit.

I think ABBA might get a third Top 40 hit this year when their album comes out next month though! :D

DK

Dave Knight

1

Yeah dont get me wrong I am a big fan of Elton, its nice to see him at number 2 in the singles charts, but we all know its from pigging backing off Dua Lipas back, which seems ironic when you think about it and a sad sign of times.
You could imagine lots of older artists could achieve a top ten hit single if they coupled up with a current artist.
Imagine Ed Shearen teaming up with Status Quo? These days it would be the only way Status Quo would get in the charts at all, but how sad is that?
These situations are all exaggerated by the format war, well I call it a war because streaming has alienated older artists from getting a look in at the charts which to me isn't fair, couple that with ageism which is getting worse. Radio 1 for example doesn't play artists generally over the age of 30,unless they have a current featured artist like the current Elton John situation.
To me following the charts these days breaks my heart.

avatar

Piran

0

That being said, I'm certainly not against classic artists collaborating with current popstars! It usually produces songs that are of amazing quality, as 'Cold Heart [PNAU Remix]' proves. :)

DK

Dave Knight

1

Yes I couldn't agree more Im not against collaborations, I really like it when Scooter collaborated with Status Quo when they reworked Whatever you want and made a rave version, something on paper that should never work, but it did.
That said some fans view that as selling out, which is kind of forcing a hit for the sake of a temporary recognition or 5 minutes of regained fame.
The problem I have with streaming is it really suites that younger audience due to many things, convenience via its portability and really cheap service, but this automatically alienates certain artists from getting that all important hit, I say important because record companies will drop you like a stone regardless of who you are.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, you could almost the same with Coldplay over on the Billboard charts this week! :P

They became the first ever British group to debut a song at #1 on their Hot 100 chart, which may surprising, until you release that BTS were the other co-lead credit on that song.

DK

Dave Knight

1

Yeah I get what you mean, although I then thought hang on the way I look at Coldplay they are still current are they not? Surely Coldplay are not at the stage they need to piggy back off someone even more current?
Does that mean artists are getting past their best quicker, or as we used to say old hat or past it quicker than before?
I mean if you look at Status Quo they had top ten hits in the 60's 70's 80's and even 90's,and even minor hits since then. My question is are artists like that due to the way things are with streaming etc we will never see artists lasting 4 decades plus ever again? It seems unlikely.
If thats correct my argument stackes up about music has died affectively.
Where will Dua Lipa be or Ed Shearen be in 40 years time?

avatar

Piran

0

I think Dua & Ed will still perform well on the albums chart in four decades from now, but maybe only the occasional hit on the singles chart. :/

DK

Dave Knight

1

Its hard to say, I mean when I was growing up there were certain artists who were bound to have a hit single and album without fail. Bands like Status Quo even had their own car park at the BBC as they were always on Top of the pops.

avatar

Piran

0

Status Quo had a car park all to themselves there? That's insane! :O

DK

Dave Knight

1

Thats because they were always on Top of the pops, I think they hold a record appearances on Top of the pops, they were that popular or had loads of hits over the years. But the minute downloading affected the charts, their hits dried up over night, because Status Quo fans only used to buy the physical formats, but they record company stopped releasing them on single. Now with streaming that kind of issue has spread like a virus within the industry for many artists.

DK

Dave Knight

1

Its hard to say where any of the current artists will be next year talk about decades away.
Ed was on about retiring from the music industry to spend time with his family, but if anything his career has jusr gone into over drive.
Ive nothing against collaborations but that sorr of thing has been more common over the last 20 years or so.
Artists didnt need to be propped up by another possibly more popular artist just to spawn hits.
Anyone can have a hit if they do that but its nothing much to be proud of as such.

I'm not as hyped as I should be sadly, I feel like this isn't really the time of year for her to release, and her new era scares me

avatar

Piran

1

Why do you think that? She released her last lead single only a week later in 2015, so Adele putting something out in the middle of October isn't exactly unprecedented!

Also, why would her new era scare you? :P

avatar

Half Giant- Ethan

1

Scare was the wrong word, but I feel like it’s all gonna be the same slow Adele songs that my sister uses to go to sleep, which are great the ones that exist, but like Ed, if there’s nothing new or different for her, then it could be quite dull.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, I don’t think Adele will do anything significantly different to what she’s done before, but I guess the difference between her & Ed is that we’ve been waiting a lot longer for new music from her, while she also generally has far better single choices!

That’s why my expectations still remain as high as they do for this new era. :)

avatar

youngoffender

1

Am I alone in thinking 'My Universe' the worst single Coldplay have ever released? The Everyday Life album took them in a more interesting direction, with a bit of soul and texture, but this bland vacuity of a song out-bores the worst offenders of the Mylo Xyloto era. A collaboration with BTS is the kind of cravenly commercial thing Maroon 5 would do to shore up their Asian secondary markets - it's beneath Chris Martin and co.

As everyone is doing it

🔴 (Negative)
- Love Tonight gets an ACR reset. This isn't clicking with me at all
- Love Nwantiti (ah ah ah) climbs to number four. I get that it's representing a genre and a culture or whatever, but I don't feel it at all.
- If You Really Love me (How Will I Know) continues to rise, I'm so glad John Newman is back on the map but I cannot support this
-Leave Before You Love Me drops out of the top 40, and will most likely hit ACR next week. I rly wish this had hit top 20, or even top 10, such a tune and a collab.
-Better Days is climbing. This is by far Dermot's worst, I'm disappointed.
-Freaks is still here. Why lord, why?
-Bored didn't debut :(

🟠 (Mixed)
-All three Drake tracks are still in the top 20, but at least they're dropping, same with Clash by Dave.
-Meet Me At Our Spot climb. I don't love it or hate it, and I quite like WILLOW. It's a grower.
-Ed at number one. You guys know I love Ed, but he has better songs, and Cold Heart is so much better IMO, celebrating and modernising the works of the amazing Elton John
-It horrifies me that Get Into It (Yuh) has overtaken Need To Know. I'm aware the latter is on ACR but still.
-Billie still isn't in the top 10, but I wouldn't say she's flopping either

🟢 (Positive)
-So glad DiE4U didn't climb
-My Universe debuts at #3! So glad to see Coldplay so high up in this era, even though it's only because of BTS.
-OUT OUT, Industry Baby, and Obsessed with you are still fairly stable within the top 10
-Cold Heart is progressively getting closer to number one.

Have a nice week all of you

My traffic light review

🔴(Bad)
1. How will I know by clean Bandit didn't chart. So disappointing as it is such a great tune.
2. Girls want girls is still in the top 10. It is actually a really boring song in my opinion and is really overrated
3. Meet me at our spot continues to climb. Another rock song in the charts that I don't like.

💛(Medium)
1. Cold heart remains at 2.I love the song so I'm happy it's doing really well but I wish that it was number 1 this week.
2. Shivers still at number 1.I like it but Ed Sheeran has had his time at the top at I really want cold heart to overtake it.
3. Dance monkey still in the charts,I really like it but 98 isn't high enough it needs to go up.
4. Love nwantiti climbing quickly-I'm not so sure what to think of it yet.
5. Drive going up 1 place. I really like this so pleased that it's climbing although I wish it had climbed more

🍏(Good)
1. Love tonight gets an ACR reset and goes into the top 30. It so deserves this and the chemistry of the singers and drama of the chorus make it so good.
2.I don't want you climbing. I heard this earlier this week and immediately fell in love, hope it goes top 40.
3. My heart goes climbing again, really hope it goes top 10.
4. Kiss my(uh oh) avoiding ACR and climbing up too places.
5. If you really love me(how will I know climbs again and reaches a new peak. Another David Guetta banger.
6. Driver's license isn't in the top 100, hehe🤭

Hope you all liked my chart review and I'd like to know what you think. Have a great week.

may I review this too?

🔴 (Negative)
1. I don't want to spread negativity but the UK deserves a better top 10 with no Ed Sheeran or Drake, imo.
2. Industry Baby down 4 spots, actually I prefer this song instead of Call Me By Your Name or that new song.
3. Nathan Dawe's new song is pretty nice, I think it should've debuted at a higher position.

🟠 (Mixed)
1. I still don't get all the buzz about Love Nwantiti but anything that can beat Mr. Sheeran has my support.
2. Hurricane down 4 positions. It's a honest song but it's Kanye West so I'll get over it pretty soon.
3. Out Out down 1. At first listen, I was like: ok, this is nice. After a few, I was like "why this song seems like someone has put a lot of bad booze into a blender and gave us so we can get drunk easily?"

🟢 (Positive)
1. Cold Heart still at #2. Pretty please let it be #1!
2. Becky still climbing! Love her. Maybe Remember gets an ACR reset next week?
3. Love Tonight is a jam, very happy to see that australian duo going up in here!

avatar

Piran

5

Yeah, it's not even that I hate Ed's or Drake's new singles (I just think they're okay), but it'd be really nice to see more underrated artists in the Top 10 for once!

coolocelot’s traffic light review - 1/10/2021

🔴 (negative)
1. oh come on... you know, i really am questioning who exactly is buying and streaming shivers. this is hands down one of the worst songs of the year. not only that, but he tied the beautiful olivia rodrigo for most weeks at number 1 this year!! BOOOOO!!!
2. continued gains for my heart goes and if you really love me - again!
3. oh, this is getting ridiculous at this point - are you guys really gonna let family ties by baby keem and the greatest rapper of all time, kendrick lamar, tank?! you’re missing out on some quality music, just saying.
4. hurricane keeps crashing and crashing... then again, so did wildest dreams. i’m on both sides, i don’t care about the feud between them because they make GREAT music.
5. i’m also gonna hop onto this topic - not related to the chart, but i wanted to ask radio 1 why they play the same songs every time during the chart show? look, i get they have a playlist but they should start playing different songs, even if i’m a fan of some of the ones played.

🟠 (mixed)
1. cold heart remains at number 2. this will maybe go into the green section soon?
2. on one hand, i’m disappointed that lil nas x fell this week... on the other hand, i’m still glad 2 out of 3 of his songs are still in the top 20!
3. the lathums got their first number 1 album - i haven’t heard it yet, but i might check out more of their music as that snippet on radio 1 sounded decent. wish public service broadcasting got the number 1 album instead though, they are so underrated.

🟢 (positive)
1. my universe got a top 3 debut. this is a great song and my favourite bts song to date, such a happy and uplifting song!
2. love nwantiti is in the top 5 - can this be the next number 1 before adele releases? anything but that ginger fool.
3. behold another song with the word “love” in the title - love tonight by australian dance duo shouse! the song got an acr reset this week. honestly the edm this year has been so depressingly boring, but this is a breath of fresh air and the first good edm top 40 debut since remember, from june! let’s talk more about this: the chemistry between the singers are amazing, and when it leads up to the choir chanting over that really groovy beat, you know this is a banger. the saxophone solos placed across the song are so good too! fantastic work shouse, you’ve created something an edm hater loves. i hope this climbs.
4. meet me at our spot is edging ever closer to the top 20! i really hope this ends up there, it’s so good.

have a fantastic weekend everyone and thanks for reading. 🧡

Agree to disagree, I personally it brings more representation to a wider variety of genres (Heat Waves, Sugarcrash, Freaks, Meet Me At Our Spot), and helps smaller artists become big (look what happened to Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tate McRae, PinkPantheress, Clinton Kane). Even if you don’t like some of these songs, artists or genres, there’s still an audience for them. :)

Wow😊. Math Professor Ed Sheeran is still the King🤴 of UK Singles Charts🙌. Ed's Chart Territory as always 👍. I'm waiting for the album "=" Equals, to complete Ed's artistic mathematical symbols🤪😁. I'm new in this community and "very late" to post a comment because of the "timezone"☹.

Weekly Chart Review:
🔴 Negative:
1) Shivers number 1 again. Believe it or not I actually like My Universe and feel like it should have been number 1, either that or cold heart.
2) Wid It and Bad Day still in the top 40. Please make these awful songs go away.
3) Girls Want Girls still in the top 10.
4) BED dropping from its rise last week. :(
5) Let Them Know down to 95.
6) Wildest Dreams TV down to 40.

🟠 Mixed:
1) Little Bit of This falling. Love it but I feel like it’s dodged ACR too much.
2) OUT OUT down to 9. However, it went to number 1 on the dance chart this week.

🟢 Positive:
1) My Heart Goes getting a new peak.
2) Woman staying strong at 14.
3) Head & Heart back in the Top 75.
4) I Don’t Want You getting a new peak
5) Kiss My (Uh Oh) avoiding ACR again
6) Cold Heart at 2 again
7) Love Tonight going Top 40!

Hey everyone! Good to see 'SHIvers' stay at number one, but gutted 'Cold Heart' and 'My Universe'. Nice to see James Arthur's 'Emily' debut this week, although I'm distraught with the knowledge that 'Bored' by Billie Eilish hasn't entered yet. Trucking ACR's 3 yr rule. It makes it so hard for old songs that blow up now to gain the valid recognition (although I suppose as it's Billie it doesn't need it, but still)

I love Sam Fenders new single released last Monday?
I loved it on first listen and is amazing called
" Spit of You", worth a listen, but probably won't do much cause of no Physical Single, just like "Seventeen Going Under" did No 44 with amazing 12th week on the chart, not bad for a No44 song?

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (01/10/2021 – 07/10/2021)

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘Bad Day’ is refusing to go away! So much for me hoping the hype for this would completely die this week. Yeah, I didn’t have the same level of hate for this that I did last week somehow, but that still doesn’t mean it’s terrible!

2) Does anyone else find that Radio 1 always seem to play the same songs every week of those that aren’t inside the Top 10, e.g. ‘Clash’, ‘Stay’, ‘Meet Me At Our Spot’, ‘If You Really Love Me [How Will I Know], ‘Drive’, ‘Wasted’, ‘Black Magic’, ‘Take My Breath’, etc.? I honestly think most of these songs are awesome, but what annoys me is the lack of variety in the chart show every week! Seriously, I swear they’re just pretending that ‘Visiting Hours’ doesn’t exist at this point & ultimately, I feel like I’m just listening to a standard radio show than the weekly chart countdown at this point & it never used to be like that, even a few months ago.

🟠 (Mixed)

1) Ed Sheeran now sets a new personal best in terms of consecutive weeks at #1 (14). I know I generally like him as an artist more than most of this community, but even then, there are much better singles in his discography that he could’ve done this with, e.g. ‘Lego House’, ‘Castle On The Hill’, ‘Galway Girl’ etc.! Why ‘Bad Habits’ & ‘Shivers’ of all songs?

2) ‘My Universe’ debuted in the Top 3 with dominant sales! Honestly, I wasn’t sure where my thoughts sat with this song when I first heard it & a week, my opinion on it only hasn’t changed. I completely understand the hype, especially from fans of these kind of pop ballads; I appreciate how sweet the lyrics are, where a couple who are being doubted by others for being completely different people to one another are determined to overshadow all of the discriminatory views from the haters & put their love for each other first, Chris Martin’s cries in the hook further inject the passion into this & yet it still feels generally like a Coldplay song because of how much of it is primarily soft, alternative rock instrumentation. As for BTS, Jungkook’s silky upper register is a surprisingly good fit to where the production is toned down a little, even if I do feel that j-hope & SUGA could’ve given us a bit more of a dynamic performance in the bridge! I think my larger issue comes with some of the bizarre mixing that’s going on here, particularly the robotic vocal pressing that randomly & abruptly appears halfway through the song (something you’d expect more from a throwaway Daft Punk single) & the choppy breakdown in the final 30 seconds for the outro just didn’t work at all, especially when the transition into it was so messy anyway. That’s why it’s not in the positive section for me yet, because while it’s a mostly fun & admittedly cute song, it had almost all the ingredients to be something truly amazing & even with 11 members on this song, it sadly still didn’t get there for me! I respect the idea, but let’s be honest, we know that both BTS & Coldplay are capable of showing off their talents far better than what we’ve heard here.

3) While I’m always disappointed to see Taylor take massive falls in the singles chart like she did today, I wasn’t even expecting ‘Wildest Dreams [Taylor’s Version]’ to last more than one week inside the Top 40, so the fact that Radio 1 actually played it on the chart show today was a really pleasant surprise for me!

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Love Nwantiti’ broke the Top 5 & is now a hit almost everywhere in the world following five different remixes of it, as well as gaining a lot of virality on TikTok! You know when I said last week that this was far from my favourite Afrobeats hits? I’m almost tempted to take that back! This keeps giving me warm, summery vibes even though we’re in the spell of terrible autumnal weather & I honestly can’t say that about a lot of R&B or dancehall hits lately. I think if this keeps growing like it is now for much longer or a popular mainstream artist hops on it, then as long as Ed doesn’t have any more tricks up his sleeve to boost the anticipation of ‘=’, I’d say that this is the most likely song to go to #1 out of any that’s in the charts right now!

2) ‘Love Tonight’ is… almost Top 20… really? Okay, I knew a David Guetta remix had been propelling the success behind this for weeks now, but I thought it was on permanent ACR for the original version being over three years old, so I was really surprised to hear that it got a manual reset back to the normal streaming ratio after a request by their record label to OCC, since you don’t typically see that happen for throwbacks like this that take a while to gain some recognition! Anyway, no complaints about it whatsoever, the song is absolutely remarkable, haha. I love the male & female “call & response” lines in the verses, proving within literally seconds that the singers here have stunning chemistry between them! They’re also part of the choir in the hook who together sound absolutely euphoric over the melodic 80’s-style electronica & thumping bass beat. The saxophone that peppers around the verses & outro also adds to the snazziness here! Honestly, Shouse have been able to crack the tough formula of making an EDM banger that would go off in clubs both today & from about 40 years ago. I can’t think of many dance hits in 2021 that will have a massive sense of nostalgia in many decades to come, we all know that & even massive fans of the genre like myself would probably admit to it, but this might be an exception to the rule! I really adore this & seriously, if you’re into upbeat party anthems & you haven’t heard this one yet, please check it out. You won’t regret it!

3) ‘Meet Me At Our Spot’ & ‘If You Really Love Me [How Will I Know]’ both made small gains! Regarding the latter, I think David Guetta did Whitney Houston’s classic more justice than Clean Bandit did (their remix of it was unfortunately disappointing for me).

4) ‘Better Days’ is still growing nicely! I have a ton of respect how motivational & hopeful the lyrics are in this. I’m so glad that the UK fell in love with another Dermot Kennedy single!

5) ‘Life Goes On’ by Oliver Tree didn’t enter the Top 40 after all! I already had a rant prepared about this, so thank goodness the British public saved me both time & sanity from not having to post it here, haha.

Piran

avatar

Half Giant- Ethan

6

I'm so glad you agree about the radio songs, until this week 2055 used to be a rly popular one, but I think they got too many OfCom complaints cus half the song was bleeped lol.

In my opinion, the John Newman & David Guetta rendition of How Will I Know is utterly appaling, because no-one can do the original justice apart from Whitney herself.

Meet Me At Our Spot isn't great imo, but it's growing on me.

I agree with you on the Ed songs. Even though I have been obsessed with SHIvers, I feel like he's been here, done this, and I hope the album is a lot less 'Ed' than this

avatar

Piran

5

Oh, yeah, I personally think that the David Guetta remix of Whitney's classic was solid for an late summer into early autumn EDM effort, but the original was always be far more superior than it. :)

Regarding Ed, like I said in last week's review, I miss when Ed experimented with different sounds from outside the mainstream like he did on 'Divide' & I've not heard any of that in the '=' era so far!
