Chart Review 10/05/24

Are you all enjoying Eurovision right now? That's a stupid question, of course you are. We all love the bonkers costumes, the cliché ballads, the political posturing mascarading as music, Graham Norton mocking the spokespersons' outfits, and the inevitable feeling that whatever the UK do nowadays, they're just gonna mess it up and finish 24th again. Eh, at least Ireland are in the final this time. And Georgia, Latvia, Luxembourg, and a bunch of other no-hopers. And Israel. So naturally the Twitter replies on the Eurovision account are a cesspit of tributes to some Iranian guy I've never heard of, and everybody calling out for Europe/Asia's finest to get ejected as if it was 1978 all over again. Look guys, you're just gonna have to get used to it. Bet you weren't complaing when Russia got vexed for annexing Crimea in 2014, weren't you?

Sorry what were we talking about again?

Ah yes, the UK Top 40. Everyone's favourite weekly study of what's popular in the UK right now, with loads of music genres regularly fighting for supermacy in a world where every song has a TikTok compilation. Even that 9-minute Mark Knopfler thing for charity from a few months ago probably has about 50 clips going round about particular guitar solos as if it's a Mars Volta review. Or something. 50 million is probably an accurate number for how much love Sabrina Carpenter's getting nowadays as well, as she romps to a 2nd week at the summit with Espresso. All power to you and all that Sabrina, but there's far more sheningans happening below you that's more important right now.

Like influential rappers having a go at each other.

So it all started when Like That by Future and Metro Boomin bellydanced into the Top 10 a couple months ago (shoots back up to 20 now), and Kendrick Lamar was spotted spitting 'bars' like "Yeah, nah, First Person Shooter was washed", and "Did you know that Prince lasted longer in society than Jacko?" Loosely, anyway. He also stated that J. Cole's ideology that he, Drake and Kendrick were the 3 big cheeses of rap was a big fat lie, so J. Cole went out and made 7 Minute Drill (flopped at 38). But he's not important. Anyways, Drake got mad and made Push Ups (slides to 30), probably the angriest and most energised the Aubrey Graham's been in years, which isn't saying much, but at least he's trying you know. Of course, Drake made the biggest mistake you can make in modern rap, Anger a Legend, and so euphoria (flies up to No.11) by good ol' Kendrick hit the streaming services sampling forgotten soul-singer Teddy Pendergrass, and shouting lines like "Don't bother cease and desisting my " and "Aren't you manipulating people to make boring records?".

Again, I haven't listened to euphoria in full, so I can't comment. I'm just stealing this off Wikipedia and pretending I came up with this, even though it will probably end up getting me dissed to no end by these North American stalwarts. Drake responded ASAP with 7:36 opus Family Matters (in at 17), with a video that has more hidden meanings than your average Taylor Swift lyric analysis, but we only had 20 minutes to digest this before Kendrick Lamar uploaded meet the grahams (a new entry at 28), which pretty much draws over Drake's musical legacy with a red marker by labelling him a, *clears throat*, SAX OFFENDER, which is odd, given I've never seen Drake play the saxophone, but go ahead. And just when you thought he'd stop beating a dead horse, Kendrick casually just posted not like us (straight in at 10, his 9th Top 10 appearance), which has a cover art basically DOXXing Drake's location, and has lyrical content that has absolutely nothing to do with his love for freeform jazz. Allegedly. There's far more stories to dissect from this, such as Drake attempting to rally the crowd with THE HEART PT. 6, and Mr. Lamar has an Instagram exclusive, non-chart eligible song called 6:16 in LA hanging about somewhere on the Internet, but the moral of the story here, is that you should never, EVER, mess with Kendrick Lamar. Otherwise your career will be over before you've even finished adding the final touches to your "masterpiece".

Anyways, you may have noticed by now but Dua Lipa put out an album last week called Radical Optimism, her first LP for 4 years since virtually soundtracking the lockdown era and reminding us that we can never escape from the 80s. No surprise then that's it's top of the Album Chart today, but it's somewhat more alarming that she's barely had ANY impact. Admittedly, Houdini and Training Season are on ACR, so there's not much she can do about that, but it's a bit disappinting to see the other songs not show much presence. Illusion doesn't even move from last week's spot of 16, which is probably enough to relegate Dua from globe-trotting superstar to island-trotting superstar, meanwhile album cut and potential 4th hit These Walls sneaks in at 40. Good for her and all, but I feel slightly ashamed that the songs from Radical Optimism haven't gotten anywhere. Maybe next time, eh?

Elsewhere, if you had Tommy Richman on the massive singles bingo cards I gave out back in January, you are clearly a clairvoyant with far more powers than I am capable of. MILLION DOLLAR BABY has done far better than it has any right to be doing by rocketing up to No.7, in a move that screams TikTok more than Good Neighbours ever could. Sheezus, 24 places? I didn't think it would climb THAT fast, man. Good for Tommy that he's got a Top 10 hit, but now he needs to prove he isn't a 1-hit wonder. You don't wanna end up like Gayle and Powfu and all the other failures. Same message for official bronze-medalist Shaboozey too. Don't f*** it up, k?

Outside the 40 and Ella Henderson has caught the ACR bug, so I can finally kiss that travesty of a song goodbye and get on with my life. Gracie Abrams and her weird career resurgence continues with Risk debuting at 67, Becky Hill's latest effort flops at 71 (take note, Dua), and that's it. Yeah no, that's it for the new entries. All that's left to say here is that Harry Styles re-enters at 41 (groan), and Fontaines D.C. are doing far more than they have any right to be doing with a 3rd week in the Top 100 for Starburster. And there was me thinking it was for Record Store Day or somethin'. Typical.

Out today to try and win your album fetishes over are Kings of Leon, M Huncho and Potter Payper, Bugzy Malone and erm, Arab Strap, whilst the singles sees Charli XCX taking another stab at the charts, Gunna boring everyone to submission, Megan Thee Stallion trying to get her career back on track, meanwhile Ice Spice returns, same too with beebadoobee and CMAT, and Post Malone has a new song out as well. With Morgan Wallen on it. I'm not sure how that will go down on Radio 1 if it charts, but stick with me and it'll all be worth it.

Anyways, I'm off now to study why Croatia's Euro-anthem has been living rent free in my head for days, to note down why there was less booing than I thought there'd be for Israel's entry getting through to the final, and also to second guess where all the other Eurovision masterclasses will be next week. As they all say, anything can happen. Bye.

(P.S. My favourite entry was Denmark's song, but they got eliminated in the semi-final, so now I'm switching allegiances to a holy trinity of Croatia, Norway, the Netherlands and Ireland. Lord help us if the latter's entry hits the Top 40 in 7 days time.)

Honestly it is a shame that dua's new album did practically nothing to the chart :/

But as you mentioned hopefully these walls can climb and become a hit.

No Top 40 rankings from me this week but please can we get ‘Home’ out of there now? The fact that Radio 1 seem to play it nearly every week on the chart show is making it even more insufferable… :/

‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ moving up to third is fantastic news though. Hopefully this can be a future chart-topper!

While I’m getting a bit tired of the Kendrick and Drake beef, I think the former has won it easily for me. Awesome to see ‘Not Like That’ in the Top 10 and ‘Euphoria’ coming very close to doing the same!

‘HISS’ remains my favourite diss track of the year so far though.

The resurgence for ‘The Sound Of Silence’ feels bittersweet…

I absolutely love Disturbed’s cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, but the CYRIL remix that’s currently causing it to go viral was a massive letdown. Thank goodness the former is the one that remains credited on the chart! 😩

‘Radical Optimism’ wasn’t on the same level as ‘Future Nostalgia’ for me, but it’s still very good and I really like the pivot Dua’s taken with it! My favourite tracks are ‘Maria’, ‘Happy For You’, ‘Houdini’ and ‘Illusion’.

Congratulations to her on a second #1 album! 😊

Good to see ‘Espresso’ with a much bigger lead at #1 this time. Sabrina’s having an incredible year so far and I’m all for it! ❤️
