it’s grown on me quite a lot too. same goes for agora hills, i already liked it a lot but it’s ironic that started streaming it a lot when it left the top 40

Agora Hills got a 10/10 on first listen for me, my first listen to n.h.i.e. was actually last week’s chart show and I’m kinda mad at myself for not listening to it earlier, it’s great. While I don’t think Doja’s new music is as good as the Planet Her era, she’s close (even though PTTR cooled on me a bit, it’s still a great song)

Good for 21 Savage that ‘Redrum’ picked up a bit, although a little disappointed that ‘Née-Nah’ didn’t last more than a week here and ‘Surround Sound’ leave with it. It would’ve gone many more weeks here if its virality didn’t coincide with Christmas. That being said, the fact it went Top 40 more than two years after its release is fantastic!

Sad to see ‘Vampire’ go too but at least Olivia is still here with ‘Can’t Catch Me Now’ which is even better for me.

On a better note, we now have six songs in the top tier! 😁

And you don't need to warn me about how I ranked the 40. Because I already have:

SUPREME CHALLENGER OF ALL-COMERS TIER:

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [13] (Apparently DANIEL Bedingfield has some new music in the locker. I'm not interested.)

NARROWLY ENDING UP AS BRIDESMAIDS TIER:

Kanye West ft. Pusha T - Runaway [40]

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [2]

Mason vs Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) [38]

Noah Kahan ft. Sam Fender - Homesick [5]

IT'S ENJOYABLE. SHUT UP. TIER:

Sam Fender - Seventeen Going Under [35] (This has no reason to come back. At all.)

Songer - Toxic [32]

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [1]

Dua Lipa - Houdini [10] (New single from her is called Training Session, and it's out on the 15th of Feb. And from what I've heard of it, it's not much cop.)

Noah Kahan ft. Hozier - Northern Attitude [29]

ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM TIER:

Mitski - My Love Mine All Mine [21]

Drake ft. Sexxy Redd & SZA - Rich Baby Daddy [15] (Says a lot about this week that I've ranked Drake as high as this)

Olivia Rodrigo - Can't Catch Me Now [28]

Sonny Fodera/MK - Asking [22]

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [9]

ERRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMM..... TIER:

Fred Again.. & baby keem - leavemealone [19]

Flo Milli - Never Lose Me [17]

David Kushner - Skin And Bones [36] (I honestly wish the finger clicks would evaporate from modern pop. This is all Loreen's fault.)

Tyla - Water [11]

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [4]

Kenya Grace - Strangers [30]

21 Savage - redrum [12]

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [3]

OK. I'M BORED OF THIS TIER:

Billy Gilles ft. Hannah Boleyn - DNA (Loving You) [16]

Chris Brown - Angel Numbers / Ten Toes [31] (I'll be dead by the time a radio station plays this)

Tate McRae - greedy [8] (Can you leave the Top 10 please? It's been 4 long months.)

Zara Larsson & David Guetta - On My Love [23]

Sabrina Carpenter - Feather [24]

cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada [7]

Becky Hill/Sonny Fodera - Never Be Alone [34]

Tate McRae - exes [25]

AS BAD AS MY FINGERNAILS TIER:

The Weeknd/Madonna/Playboi Carti - Popular [14]

D-Block Europe/Noizy - Eagle [33]

Zach Bryan ft. Kacey Musgraves - I Remember Everything [20]

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things [18]

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [27]

Ella Henderson ft. Rudimental - Alibi [26] (The more introverted non-dance numbers of 10 years prior seem like a lifetime ago.)

EXTERMINATE ANYBODY BEHIND THE RECORDING OF THIS TIER:

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [37] (Remember what I said last week about this?)

Kygo & Ava Max - Whatever [39] (Does anyone else think the Spirit of 2016 should die off? Or is it just me.)

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [6] (Get ready to see this at the bottom for the next 5 months.)

Chart Review 26/01/24

YO! YO! MUSIC IS TERRIBLE AGAIN! YEAH! WOO! WO- sorry what was I doing again?

Oh right, the chart. Guten tag, and this week hasn't exactly been the most normal in recent times. A game that combines the mechanics of Fortnite with the designs of Pokémon is now more popular than Fortnite itself, Jürgen Klopp just announced he'll be departing the Liverpool job, and Justin Timberlake is back out of nowhere. But you gotta wait until next week for more details. Also the BRIT Award Nominees were revealed yesterday, in a bizarre parallel universe where credibility actually REWARDS you. You'll search in vain for any petty bland singer-songwriters, instead you'll discover the riotous glamrock of Young Fathers, the pointlessly jazzy efforts of Yussuf Hayes, and a category where Caroline Polachek and CMAT go toe-to-toe with Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. Just a shame that as usual, none of them have done diddly squat this week.

The Top 40 witnesses 6 brand new efforts, along with some old tune that you couldn't escape from for long enough. It also links to good ol' Noah Kahan, a man who is No.1 again with Stick Season for a month now, but can also be held responsible for the highest new entry of the day at 5. Step forward, Homesick, yet another track from the guy that's been swamped by another artist. Post Malone gave him a much-needed boost on Dial Drunk, Hozier popped up on Northern Attitude, and now Sam Fender is the reason for why this tune has done as well as it has. It's also a lot better than the other hits Noah's got in his backpocket, but that may have something to do with the fact that I love Mr. Fender and his Newcastle twang. It's also the (unfortunate) reason why Seventeen Going Under re-enters at 35, a moment that nobody needed. Seriously, not even Sam wanted it back in the nation's consciousness again. It's overplayed, over-talked about, and over-streamed to tedium. And yet it's still better than most of this week's Top 40. Says a lot about the 2020s, really.

Victorious in the album stakes this week, to the shock of nobody, are Green Day, the shouty anarchic punk flunks who've been terrorising the British scene for 30 years now, and who are rewarded for their efforts with a 5th No.1 album. Saviors is the name of it, and it may as well have detonated the lbum chart with how dominant it's victory was. So yeah, great day for them, proof that some people will never leave the charts alone, and the Official Chart website lets you see another glimpse of a man who looks 22, rather than the 51 year-old pudge that is Billie Joe Armstrong. Seriously, that guy just doesn't want to grow up.

Elsewhere and most of the other new hits make me want to build a coffin and trap myself in there until 2025. First up is Benson Boone, he of In The Stars fame, and a man whose previous chart pedigree SCREAMS overrated ballad man in the mold of Lewis Capaldi. For his new hit, Beautiful Things, he's decided to try and get away with yelling into the mic as loud as possible at random intervals, a method which is less The 1975 and more Sam Ryder on a rough night. And I don't like Sam Ryder, so that kinda tells you where that hit is headed. Still though, 2nd Top 40 effort, so I guess he's happy. Even though I'm not.

The next two, however, are the chart comebacks of 2 of the most underperforming, overplayed, and occasionally good dance singers of their time, that both started out on British TV talent shows a decade ago. Doing better out of the two is former X Factor combatant Ella Henderson, whose chart form since topping the lot with Ghost in 2014 hasn't exactly been for the best. Ever since Jax Jones roped her in for This Is Real in 2019, she's been on a downward slope of pointless EDM collabs and SHOCKINGLY poor ballads, if her collaboration with Tom Grennan is anything to go by. Her new effort's shot up to 26 this week, and if anything, it's just as dull. I don't hate her THAT much, but it's always a shame whenever she wastes her talent on useless samplings of songs, helmed by DJs who should've retired long ago. Rudimental are said DJs, producing a song which is less Feel The Love and more Dancing Is Healing. And I LOATHE that song. So yeah, no, Alibi . End of.

As for Becky Hill, well, it was all going horribly wrong in the creativity department ever since she was knocked out of The Voice some 11 years back. Numerous dance-hits that (mostly) clogged up the Top 10 for months on end, BRIT awards that she didn't really deserve, and a never-ending feeling that the state of pop nowadays is all her fault. That was until Disconnect happened, and it suddenly altered my perception. It actually made me want to know what she would make next. Now I regret that decision. Roping in Sonny Fodera was a somewhat risky idea, no matter how inspired Asking was (and still is), and so it proves with Never Be Alone, a song that tries to do everything, but ultimately succeeds at nothing except getting approvals from braindead radio programmers. Maybe that's why it's only at 34. From what I've seen in recent years though, if a dance song like this enters in the Top 40 in Week One, then it's gonna be in the Top 10 by March. So good luck folks. You won't escape this song. Get used to it.

As for the others, David Kushner is in dangerous 1-hit wonder territory, as the massive success of Daylight casted a massive shadow over the rest of his work. His new one, Skin And Bones, at least makes it to 36, but the stigma is very much still intact. The public just don't want to hear anymore from him at the moment. Also sneaking in is a forgotten man in the dance-pop stakes. Remember Kygo? The guy who made Firestone? It Ain't Me? Stole The Show? OK. I don't blame you either for forgetting him. And you probably should, if his new one is anything to go by. Whatever attempts to twist that famous Shakira song with the mountains and the panpipes into a predictable break-up EDM floorfiller. And it . Obviously. In fact, it's actually terrible. What did Shakira do to deserve this treatment!? And no, hiring a famous singer to do the singing doesn't improve it, given I wasn't a fan of Ava Max to begin with. And it may never change. Thanks Kygo, for soiling your reputation. I hope you're happy with yourself. Be content with your first Top 40 hit since 2020, but be aware that it might just be your last.

As for the future, it's clear that The Last Dinner Party aren't gonna get forgotten in a hurry, given they've shot up to 41 this week, and can probably expect to be joined by Michael Marcagi, as he rises to 47. Elsewhere, YG Marley moves up twelve spots, Renee Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion's contribution to the Mean Girls soundtrack arrives at 96, while one place lower is a reworking of Dido's Thank You, as attempted by Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. And it's fine, whatever, I don't care anymore. I'm done talking about these gruelling efforts to make an older song sound newer.

Next week will be your usual Guess Who? competition, as Jason Derulo decides he's gonna hang out with Michael Buble (of course he has), Liam & John release the followup to the worst performing Top 20 single in a long, long while, Tom Odell and James Arthur commit a battle to the death on the album chart, YUNGBLUD has chosen to hook up with Lil Yachty on their new one, and The Kid LAROI, Megan Thee Stallion, Skepta and Ice Spice all have new ones for you to digest.

Oh, and Justin Trousersnake has returned. See you next week, chumps.

(P.S. The BRITs may have been eclectic in their nominations, but it feels weird nominating Cleo Sol in the R&B Act, and then putting her against her SAULT bandmates. It gives off the message that R&B in this country is DEAD. Even though rap and grime most certaintly isn't.)

Can't believe this is 'Starboy's first ever week at #1 for you, but good to see it finally at the top of the chart! 😊

Looks like Coolio and Shakira are the next artists to have their iconic hits interpolated in the charts.

No doubt ‘Alibi’ and ‘Whatever’ are going to get a very mixed reaction here, but one thing’s for sure and that’s that I absolutely love ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ and ‘Whenever, Wherever’. Two of my favourite childhood classics! 🥺

if you like 'whatever' then you have zero credibility as a music critic. that song is trash

Ikr? Where did I say that I'm a music critic? I did weekly reviews up until three years ago and even they were just for fun! 😭

piran’s not a critic, even when they did weekly chart reviews a while back they were only doing it because they felt like it

While I may be kind of mixed on ‘Beautiful Things’, I have to say that I definitely wasn’t expecting that rock-inspired hook from Benson Boone! 😳

I literally heard ‘Skin and Bones’ properly for the first time in the chart show and I’ve already forgotten what it sounds like lol.

Yeah, I'd never heard Beautiful Things before the chart show... but I like it!

I'd say it's level on quality with 'In The Stars' (shocked that never went Top 20 like this did!).

‘Homesick’ is fine enough but I much prefer ‘Seventeen Going Under’ so pleased it didn’t surpass that.

Congrats to Sam Fender on getting another Top 5 hit in the UK and I’m incredibly happy that the latter re-entered as high as it did!

Glad to see ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ back in the runner-up position! ❤️

I really hope ‘Stick Season’ doesn’t block it from getting to #1…

I think it will be #1 for at least another week considering it had 82k sales while 'Murder On The Dancefloor' had 57k! 😩
