My 2010 throwback review.
1. Timbaland feat. Justin Timberlake: Carry Out. This has without a doubt got to be one of my favourite songs from Spring that year. I really like listening to that song. Infact Timbaland and Justin Timberlake have actually done some really good songs to be honest but Carry Out has got to be their best one in my opinion
2. Ne-yo: Beautiful Monster. Another one of my favourite songs from 2010. This was a good song to be played in clubs and this is very different especially for a Ne-yo song. It was #1 in the UK charts in August of that year. It also has a very good video.
3. Jason Derulo: In My Head. This is a really good song from Jason Derulo. The video to it sort of reminds of Justin Timberlakes Like I Love You video. Also in the video he dances a bit like Michael Jackson although he was inspired by Michael Jackson. The only two differences about the video to In my Head and the video to Justin Timberlakes Like I love you is that In My Head is mostly filmed outside the store and the video to Justin Timberlakes Like I Love You is fimed in Various Locations. Both Videos were filmed outside the same store. As for the song itself, it is a really good song and it has really good beat to it. Perfect for nightclubs.

4.Professor Green feat. Ed Drewett: I Need You Tonight. I love this song it samples Need You Tonight by INXS and I think it is brilliant the song got to #3 in April 2010 and I can't of anything else to say about it.
5. Rihanna: Only Girl in the World: In my opinion, this has got to be one of her best songs and it was #1 single. The song has a really good beat to it and I like to head bang to it. This also the time when Rihanna had red hair.
6. Tinie Tempah: Pass Out. I love this song. I think it is really good and I do listen to it alot. It is a pure banger and Labrinth is also in the song but uncredited. the video is also quite good. It got to #1 in March 2010.

Okay!!! What's up people, Happy Black Friday. So this week's chart didn't bring anything so mind blowing but the songs are cool. The current top 10 is so awesome that really don't want any of the songs to exit.

"Own it" by Stormzy ft. Burna Boy & Ed Sheeran (#3) is actually my best entry this week. Lyrically it's the usual having a nice time with your girl and letting her own the moment. Sweet production and not a bad choice of collabs also.

"New Dior" by Digdat & D-Block Europe (#16) It's your usual rap song nothing new honestly. But that production is a vibe.

"Loyal" by partynextdoor ft. Drake (#31) isn't bad also. It has this afrobeats vibes blended with R&B which makes me want to move. Lyrically it's just about telling your girl to have a good time and assuring her that you're loyal. Second best entry by the way.

"French Kisses by ZieZie ft. Aitch (#35) is a track I didn't expect to hit the top 40 but then I'm not surprised. It had a surge in streams over the week. Well it's not so bad, it has groovy beat that goes with the chorus but the song sounds tiring honestly. For me, it'll have been better if Aitch wasn't featured. Lyrically it's nothing so big "come let me give you the French kisses, mwah". Then again, I've heard worse.

"Into the unknown" by idina menzel (#36) was completely unexpected but here it is. With this I might actually go to see Frozen 2. It's an awesome soundtrack. I love it.

"Can't fight this feeling" by Bastille is really nice but might not be holding up in the coming weeks due to shortcomings in the streaming department and that's a general problem for Bastile which is very disappointing. The song is nice but I expected something better. "No I can't fight this feeling anymore" repetitions might die on me soon but generally it's lovely.

By the way, I'm quite disappointed with the fact that "one i've been missing" by little mix (#59) and "we got love" by Sigala (#42)
didn't make the top 40. They both deserve to be hits. Especially the latter.

I review everything hot inside and bubbling just under the top 40, and we actually have quite the interesting range of tracks today - from Britain's finest hip-hop, to its not so finest, from Canadian R&B, back to the UK with an indie band, and even a soundtrack single! Without further ado, let's get started.

(NEW ENTRY) #03: STORMZY feat. ED SHEERAN and BURNA BOY - OWN IT
This is the type of track that captures me from the very first listen, which actually doesn't happen very often… let's go a bit more in depth. For as much as Stormzy is unarguably one of the biggest names in UK urban music currently, and I've always respected his music, I could never really get behind it. "Big For Your Boots", one of his biggest songs, was actually not bad, but "Vossi Bop" was mostly forgettable for me, with recent follow-ups managing to impress me, but without much longevity. This however? Oh, this is fantastic. I love the club-ier tone the production sets, very different from most of his other tracks, which might be a big factor as to why I like this so much. Stormzy and Ed still have amazing chemistry, but I need to also mention Burna Boy, whose voice is an incredible addition and fits the beat great. I think my only complaint would have to be that this is a bit too short, haha! Overall, I'm going to give this a strong 9/10, which is actually the highest score I've given to a song ever since I started doing these reviews! Who would've thought a Stormzy and Ed Sheeran song would have this honor.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #16: DIGDAT feat. D-BLOCK EUROPE - NEW DIOR
On the other side of the UK urban spectrum, we have D-Block Europe… and as divisive as I am on them generally, their tracks usually end up growing on me at the end. DigDat, however, has previously had five songs make the top 75, four of which I have thoroughly enjoyed (the fifth one I haven't heard). Straight off the bat with this, the chorus, sung by Young Adz, I think it's trying to build up to something it can't really live up to, though it did grow on me throughout the song, and the production is pretty good as well. However, it's DigDat that really throws me off here - his flow is generally a bit weirder, and while it has worked for most of his other work, it really feels kinda odd here for some reason. I think that really shows at the transitions from his verse to Young Adz' chorus, which I also should mention suits the beat better, in my opinion. I'm still incredibly divided on this song, but I feel like it has the potential to grow on me, so I'm going with a strong 6/10 for now.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #31: PARTYNEXTDOOR feat. DRAKE - LOYAL
I first heard this track on the Sunday First Look show on Radio 1 and it felt a bit weird, but I guess as with most songs for me, it took a second hearing to get it right. It's obvious this is absolutely nothing extraordinary as far as R&B is concerned, and is only here because of the "feat. Drake", which, before I go on with the review, I have to mention, is in itself incredible that one artist can have so much name power that he can get a song from going under the radar to top 40 hit. Anyways, I don't usually comment on this, as it's a factor with most urban songs and usually doesn't matter, but here it sticks out a lot: this track barely has any structure. I got lost listening to it even the second time, and I couldn't really make out what was the chorus (if any), what was the verse, and if not for the Drake feature, this probably could have passed for a freestyle. PARTYNEXTDOOR's vocals are fine for the most part, but largely outshined by Drake's, and the production is… there, I suppose. I'm very picky with R&B generally, which is why I'm going so hard on this, and that's the reason I'm gonna have to give it a 5/10, unfortunately.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #35: ZIEZIE feat. AITCH - FRENCH KISSES
To begin with, I just want to say, I'm impressed how they're running with the French theme throughout the entire song, it's not just a random word thrown in the title and mentioned once, the music video is actually set in Paris and ZieZie goes on to do a small bit in French, which was kinda cool. Him and Aitch still have great chemistry I think, despite the song not flowing as seamlessly as it did in "Buss Down", but it's still pretty good. Speaking of Aitch, his delivery is as per usual great, and they both fit the fun instrumentation very well. Since I've only heard this once, I can't give it that high of a score, but I can't actually find anything that's wrong with this song! It's pretty catchy as well, which is a great plus for an urban track. With all of the above noted, I'm going to give this a pretty strong 7/10, but again, this has the potential to be a huge grower and while I doubt it will go on to be as big as their other collab was, I do think it's yet to peak!

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #36: IDINA MENZEL and AURORA - INTO THE UNKNOWN
While I wasn't looking forward to reviewing the new Bastille song, I had an even more negative mindset going into this. I guess it also doesn't help that I'm not a fan of cartoon movie soundtracks. I'm going to keep this short, as I don't expect to have much good to say about this - Idina Menzel's vocals are as grating as they were a couple of years ago, and the song itself is… actually wait, let me go into detail about this. Songs from movies usually have a huge impact on you when you're, you know, actually watching the movie. If I'm watching "Frozen 2", I'll probably enjoy the song as it compliments the movie much more. As a standalone track… no. I think Scott Mills gave the best description about this on the chart show that I could possibly think of - this is going to be "the bane of parents' existence for the next 6 months". I can concur to that. I don't want to go that low, to be honest, but this is a special case - I'm giving this a 3/10.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

(NEW ENTRY) #39: BASTILLE feat. LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA - CAN'T FIGHT THIS FEELING
I'm gonna be honest, I've never been a huge fan of Dan Smith's vocals… okay, that was probably not the best way to start this, haha. What immediately sticks out is obviously the performance by the London Contemporary Orchestra - I'm not one for this type of stuff, but I can appreciate it to a certain extent. The lyrics are also pretty hard-hitting, and if I was basing my review exclusively off of that, this would be a strong winner. I'm not, though. There's a certain type of slow song I can appreciate, and this is probably me just being used to the regular top 40 ballads, but this is not it. I originally had a pretty negative write-up on this, but it took a second hearing for me to go "Huh, this isn't actually bad." There's nothing actually wrong with it, it just doesn't do it for me. Which is why I'm going with a 4/10.

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

And that's all for this week! It very much appears next week will be pretty quiet, apart from two major The Weeknd releases, the former of which seems to be doing excellent so far, and the latter will likely follow suit, but the battle for #1 will be interesting to follow: "Dance Monkey" did manage to stay on top this week, but I feel like we really shouldn't rule out "Before You Go" as a contender for the top spot, and honestly, with Stormzy's album being released in two weeks, maybe even that could manage a week at the summit - on the Christmas chart, too! So place those bets on Lewis, Stormzy and Ed Sheeran, or even Tones and I, because if that experiences another small surge, it could definitely compete for Christmas #1. Anything else probably has a fraction of a percent of a chance to actually go that far. All the other names on betting sites that for some reason have incredibly high odds - Robbie Williams, D Double E (?), George Michael (this is just delusional), James Blunt (okay, I'm gonna stop you here, that's not happening lol), even AIWFCIY and LC don't have any chance of going #1 on the Christmas chart, considering it's going to be measuring sales/streams from the week before the holiday, and, you know, those streams are halved. So the race for the contenders, who actually have a realistic chance of claiming that title, is on. Let's see how it pans out!

Finally, check out my brand new CrownNote chart! Sorry to anyone whose chart I did not check out last week, I will make sure to do so this week.

With both Piran and CoolOcelot giving this track a relatively low score, I'm glad to find someone who likes this as much as I do! I definitely agree with all of your points on this track, and it gets a light - solid 10/10 from me! Though I am a massive fan of both Stormzy and Ed Sheeran, so that score probably isn't even that far above their averages! I like 'Own It' so much, though, that it's gotten over 330 streams from me so far, including 278 in its first week, which makes it my biggest streaming week for any song in 2019!

avatar

akyovbashiev

3

That's... actually pretty impressive, wow. I couldn't ever dream of doing close to 300 streams of one song in a week without getting absolutely sick of it, haha! It is great that we both seem to really enjoy it - with me, however, I'm more of a passive fan of both Ed and Stormzy, in that there's not a lot of other tracks by them I enjoy that much, this is a special case.

That being said, 'Own It' is pretty great for now, I'm just hoping it doesn't wear off on me quickly.

Disappointing to see Tones & I beat Lewis Capaldi to #1 this week. Was really rooting for the latter considering the Spotify figures I've seen but oh well.

#3 - "Own It" - Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Burna Boy
Not bad, I can see me "not minding" it in the future but just not now. 5/10.

#16 - "New Dior" - DigDat, D Block Europe
This song just doesn't appeal to me sadly. 2/10.

#31 - "Loyal" - PartyNextDoor, Drake
I can barely distinguish the verse and the hook because the instrumental sounds so monotonous. Not a fan. 3/10.

#35 - "French Kisses" - ZieZie, Aitch
I don't dislike it. It's a little catchy but that "mwah" just sounds weird to me. 4/10.

#36 - "Into the Unknown" - Idina Menzel, Aurora
Not as catchy as Let It Go, but maybe it needs time. I actually prefer the Panic version but this gets a 6/10.

#39 - "Can't Fight This Feeling" - Bastille
Sombre but it doesn't stick unfortunately. Still a pretty nice song though! 6/10.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones & I becomes the longest running #1 single of 2019 so far, with a ninth consecutive week on top! It racked up 9.58 million streams over the past seven days, as well as being the most downloaded track of the week.

‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa was the most played song on British radio over the past week!

‘Dance Monkey’ also spends a seventh week in a row as the country’s most watched YouTube video, although it does decline 10.5% in views, down to 4.38 million for the tracking week!

STORMZY FT ED SHEERAN & BURNA BOY - OWN IT (#3)
While the chart run of ‘Take Me Back To London’ got me tired of the song quicker than most, I still stand by saying that the original was one of the best tracks from ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ & a fantastic ambassador to grime music in bringing the genre’s success to other countries! Following on from that, I was looking forward to what Ed & Stormzy’s third collaboration would bring… which is unfortunately not a lot! Yeah, I dig Stormzy’s more chilled delivery on the opening hook of the song & he can ride the groove well, but his content seemed ridiculously repetitive, especially since he’s usually such a lyrical mastermind! While Ed is at least more creative with his presentation, he still feels somewhat out of place here & not as comfortable as we’ve heard from his other his this year. Factor all of that in & you barely notice that Burna Boy is even here, who harmonises with Stormzy earlier in the song, but he’s pushed so far back in the otherwise messy mix that I can hardly hear him at all! Again, I still have a lot of respect for a majority of things all three of these artists have done, but I sadly can’t put this among them. Solid 5/10 here!

DIGDAT FT D-BLOCK EUROPE - NEW DIOR (#16)
I’m not even going to talk about this one for very long, since I’ve already said the same thing about D-Block Europe six times before, you get the message! Production with absolutely no substance, minimal effort in their delivery, weak adlibs, even DigDat outshining them here! Maybe the gentle groove deep down in the song which stands out near the end is the only attraction here, because it’s very clear that the writing shows no signs of developing, especially when the first notable line (which I’m not even going to repeat) is about having $ex with girls instead of caring about them! In other words, another week, another drill debut we can dismiss almost immediately. Solid 3/10!

PARTYNEXTDOOR FT DRAKE - LOYAL (#31)
It might have been a while since many people would consider PARTYNEXTDOOR relevant, but honestly, I would’ve expected his comeback to be with none other than regular collaborator, Drake. As for this, on first listen, I actually feel this is something I could very easily warm to with time! Despite three producers working on this, the tropical-pop tone & even the auto-tuned vocals remain intact throughout the entire song, where PARTYNEXTDOOR can also vibe with Drake rather pleasantly here. I do feel that this does take a bit of time to get properly going, as well as fading out, but from the main body that we do get, I did like this a lot more than I was expecting. Obviously, my rating can change a lot this early on, but right now, strong 6/10!

Just interrupting the flow of covering new entries, it’s so awesome to see ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ back in late November! Hopefully this’ll be the year it goes all the way to #1!

ZIEZIE FT AITCH - FRENCH KISSES (#35)
I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this one, since Aitch & ZieZie have never really captured my interest on their own, although they actually produced impressive results when they recently collaborated on ‘Buss Down’, which has only grown on me even more since I reviewed it here! As for this, no, I’m sorry, the same thing just isn’t going to happen. I mean, I actually got intrigued by the French-style introduction, but the transition to a blocky trap beat seemed incredibly turbulent, then we get ZieZie who sounds a lot more trembly than usual (at least in English, because his brief French delivery actually didn’t sound bad). Other than that, he just sounds really boring, where even Aitch sounds a bit more engaged for at least being slightly charismatic. Even then, all the content is about is trying to make out with the girl, which is probably the most predictable lyrical approach from Aitch. Overall, there was potential for this to work, but it sadly got ruined by bland performances across the board. For that, light 4/10!

IDINA MENZEL FT AURORA - INTO THE UNKNOWN (#36)
So look, for as annoyingly overplayed as ‘Let It Go’ was six years ago, it had an anthemic hook that was impossible not to sing along to! It certainly had the magic to become arguably one of the biggest Disney songs of the decade. Unfortunately, you can tell this song is trying to follow a very similar formula, which sadly fails to impress anywhere near as much! I do like the playful pianos that open the song, but the whispery, spoken vocals have never been a winning point for any of the Frozen soundtrack songs, but they’re somehow even worse here as the upper register is a lot weaker in general. There’s certainly potential when the strings & knocks kick in the second verse, since you get interesting switches of dynamic, but the hook still falls really flat for me! Also, while ‘Let It Go’ was such a defining motivational anthem, the content here is just about not venturing into unknown territory, but with the mysterious feel of the song as a whole only partly getting there! So yeah, I see the appeal, but I’m probably going to forget this even exists by next week. On that note, light 5/10!

BASTILLE FT LONDON CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRA - CAN’T FIGHT THIS FEELING (#39)
It’s hard not to find John Lewis Christmas advert songs absolutely adorable, especially with the videos attached to them! That said, I have to review this as a song by itself, which even then is still mostly enjoyable. Dan Smith’s vocals are the centerpoint of how beautiful & sentimental this cover is, which is well accompanied with the violins courtesy of the London Contemporary Orchestra. In fact, all the string instrumentals from them capture the emotion from Dan in a very touching & stunning manner, as well as the timpani really driving the power behind this. My only nitpick would be that this cover doesn’t really allow the other members of Bastille to stand out, but that’s been a criticism I’ve always had with their music in general! Overall though, while it doesn’t beat the original for me, I do hope this can climb in the weeks building up to Christmas. Therefore, light 8/10!

On the albums chart, Coldplay continue their perfect streak, as ‘Everyday Life’ scores them their eighth #1 with the third biggest debut of 2019 so far (81,000 combined chart sales!).

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Christmas Present’ by Robbie Williams (debuts at #2, 67,000 chart sales), ‘You’re In My Heart’ by Rod Stewart & The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (debuts at #3), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (stationary at #4) & ‘Back Together’ by Michael Ball & Alfie Boe (3-5).

While Robbie Williams didn’t achieve the top spot this week, he does have the fastest-selling album on cassette since ‘NOW 52’ in July 2002! All of Robbie’s solo studio albums have charted within the Top 2.

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Heartless’ & ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd, ‘Up All Night’ by Khalid & maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Haha, not really!

I liked 'Can't Fight This Feeling' a lot & 'Loyal's not bad, but the other debuts either underwhelmed or annoyed me.

Hey Piran! It's cool to see 'Dance Monkey' get a 9th consecutive week at #1, though I never would've guessed it'd come even close to that amount when it first reached #1! I really like seeing 'Before You Go' shoot up to #2 on its first full week on the chart, and 'ROXANNE' climbing in the Top 10 was good to see. 'This Is Real', 'Watermelon Sugar' and 'Better Half Of Me' all climbing to new peaks is cool as well, though it is disappointing to see 'Circles' hit ACR with that massive drop.
The debuts this week were a mixed bag for me. Obviously it'll be no surprise that I absolutely love 'Own It', and that it's my favourite debut of the week by a huge margin! I can definitely see where you're coming from with regards to Burna Boy's vocals being pushed back in the mix, but that doesn't really put me off the song at all, and I still like his parts in the chorus and first verse, and I love the more chilled vibe that this song gives off, as well as both Stormzy & Ed's vocals throughout the song. Yeah, solid - strong 10/10 for me on this one! 'New Dior' was just boring for me, so a strong 4/10 for this one, while I was somewhat disappointed by 'Loyal', especially with PARTYNEXTDOOR's vocals, but I did still kind of like the beat & Drake's vocals, so a light 6/10 here. 'French Kisses' was nowhere near as good as 'Buss Down' for me, just a light 5/10 for this, and 'Into The Unknown' couldn't match 'Let It Go' for me either - solid 4/10 for this one. Lastly, I don't mind 'Can't Fight This Feeling', but it's not really my type of music, so a solid 6/10 here.
Next week it looks like the Christmas tracks will come rocketing up the charts yet again, but I think the Top 3 will remain entirely unchanged. 'Dance Monkey' is still ruling Spotify, YouTube and Deezer, and while it's at #2 on iTunes, it's behind an X Factor track with no streaming behind it so that won't be a threat. The interesting one comes from Apple Music, where 'Dance Monkey' is at #2 behind 'Own It' - I still think the latter will be #3 in the next chart, but its chances of being the Christmas #1 seem to be getting better and better! The Weeknd's tracks are definitely doing better than I expected, so they should both be pretty big debuts, but I think almost every other potential debut will be washed away by Christmas tracks.

Hey Gameskiller! :)

Yeah, I know I said it was a bold prediction that 'Dance Monkey' would get to #1, but even I didn't see it getting anywhere close to nine weeks there (with an inevitable tenth tomorrow!).

Haha, I thought 'Own It' would get a perfect score from you, although it just didn't connect with me in the same way that I wanted it to, but it might grow on me with time. I guess the only other debut we don't really agree on 'Can't Fight This Feeling', although I will admit that I feel the John Lewis advert kind of helped its score for the better here, haha.

It'll literally just be The Weeknd & maybe one or two Celebrity X Factor songs that I'm covering tomorrow at this rate, since we could go from one to maybe at least half a dozen Christmas songs on the upcoming chart!

Speaking of which, the festive takeover is what could stop Camila's album bomb over on my personal charts considerably! Also, given how dominant my #1 is right now, 'Romance' might have less of an impact in the Top 10 than 'Camila' did. That said, I'm still very excited for tomorrow, where I'm sure we'll have a lot more to discuss about it.
