My thoughts and observations on this Chart from 18th July 2010

1.B.O.B feat. Hayley Williams: Airplanes. To me I think it is a very good song. It is not something I would listen to all the time but I would listen to it if it comes on the radio. I believe it was massive hit when it was first released and still gets airplay to this day. It also features on Now That's What I call Music 77.

2. Yolanda Be Cool VS D Cup: We Speak No Americano. When i first heard the song back in 2010, I didn't like it as much but when I heard it on The Inbetweeners Movie which is the scene where Will, Simon and Neil dances towards those girls, I began to like the song for a while but not as much now.

7. JLS: The Club is Alive. This is one of my favourite songs from JLS. It is very upbeat and something that would dance too. It is a shame that JLS had split up. Who here remember the JLS hoodies that only girls wore. I wonder if there would ever be a time where JLS would get back together and have a reunion in the future. It also features on Now That's What I call Music 76

9. Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull: I like it. This song is also one of my favourite songs from 2010. It samples All Night Long by Lionel Richie. This song was a #4 hit when it first came out. It Also features on Now That's What I Call Music 76

20. Jason Derulo: Ridin' Solo. This was Jason Derulo's Third single from his first album which is self titled. This song reached #2 in the Uk Charts in May 2010 and it had a lot of Airplay again. I can't think of what else to say about it.
12. Kylie Minogue: All The Lovers. To be honest, this ain't a very bad tune. Infact, it is one of my favourite songs from kylie Minogue. However, I find the video weird as it features people taking off their clothes and piling on top of each other.
To all the songs, well some are quite good and some are quite bad.

So if we did have a TV show about Music, what should we feature in it?

We should have a news segement and talk about all the latest releases coming out and songs that could be entering the charts in the future

That's a brilliant idea and we could also have a special guest who a singer on the show every week.

Yeah, we could invite Lewis Capaldi on the show, he has a very good sense of humour.

I know I'm breaking my own rules by replying to you and giving you attention, but your exchanges are getting more and more ridiculous, with this being my favorite I think. How do you come up with this stuff?

I've also been meaning to ask you ever since you started posting here: how do you switch accounts so fast that you can reply from another one within literally a minute or two? Do you have all these convos prepared in a Word doc or something, or are you just a master typer?

Assuming you'd actually break the fourth wall and answer me, anyway...

2

Honestly, that's pretty impressive. You obviously have a very vivid imagination - I guess I could only advise you to put it to better use than starting fake arguments with yourself on a music forum. And if you're really into the discussions on here, you could just cut the shtick and post exclusively from one account and join the conversation - at this point, I don't think there's anyone on here that believes any of these convos are real, or that there's actually multiple accounts of different people.

But hey, who am I to stop you from enjoying yourself?

JC

Jeremy Clarkson

0

How about you shut up. Go and listen to Baby Shark I know that is your favourite song

FG

No I hate baby Shark. It is a very bad song. Do you know what, just go away and do not @ me again

FG

Maybe I could try and stop the fake arguments and join in discussions using only this account which is my real account. I am doing throwback reviews throughout the week. I think Piran Delves and coolocelot101 should also do more throwback reviews.

The ususal chavvy assortment that you'd rather drill your own head out with a pneumatic [drill] than listen to with the odd exception. I bet Radio 1 have a permanent and dedicated supply of parcetamol for the Presenters. Never see any indie rock or alternatives getting anywhere. Very depressing. It's been like that for about 10 years. The only time that you see a rock band these days with any edge is when Queen gets put back in??? Something's badly wrong with the OFC's skewed calculations of what people listen to. "Init Blud you get me?", "brap brap".

avatar

akyovbashiev

1

I'm assuming you aren't a huge fan of this new 'rap and hippity-hop' music that the kids are so into these days, which is fine. Since you complain that there is barely any rock or alternative music in the chart, I assume you prefer that - also fine.

But to assume that the OCC's calculations are "skewed" because the music you like isn't doing well is just delusional and naive. A large percentage of the data that is used to calculate these charts is very public - Spotify's daily charts even show the precise number of streams each song has, and Apple Music and YouTube show relative positions, also on a daily basis - those are three of the biggest components. (I guess there's iTunes as well, for that additional 3% of data.) Calculations add up.

Oh, and I'm sure Radio 1 presenters couldn't care less whether it was Noel Gallagher or Krept & Konan they're playing.

Tonight, I take a look back at the Charts from late 2012 and early 2013

PSY: Gangnam Style: One of the most popualar dance songs of the year. It was a massive hit and the video has over 1 billion views on YouTube. I remember everyone at my College doing the dance when it first came out. My College tutor who I had at the time showed me and my coursemates the video.

Robbie Williams: Candy. I fell in love with the song the first time I heard it when it was uploaded onto YouTube in September 2012. I find it very catchy and I really like the video as well as I find it entertaining. The song entered the UK Charts on 4th November 2012 and was number 1 for 2 weeks.

Ellie Goulding: Anything could Happen: Once again it was one of my favourite songs from 2012. I find it very Catchy and I really like it. I sometimes sing it to myself. I entered the UK Charts at number 5 on 7th October 2012.

The Script feat. Will.I.am Hall of fame: I really like the song at it was a number 1 hit in mid September 2012. I think the song is very catchy and it is easy to sing. The video to the song is brilliant.

Bastille: Pompeii. I really like the song and I think it is catchy. I entered the Charts at number 2 in February or March 2013. It became a massive hit back in Spring 2013 and had a lot of Airplay.

Avicii Vs Nicky romero: I could be the one. Rest in Peace Avicii. I could be the one was one of my favourite Avicii singles. I think the Music it was brilliant and I like the Lyrics of the song as well. it became a massive as well being performed live I think It was featured on some TV adverts.
Disclosure: White Noise. I like the song. I think it is very catchy and I rememeber hearing it for the first time in early 2013. The music in it is brilliant and I sometimes listen to it as well.
That's all for now.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones & I becomes the longest running #1 of 2019 on the singles chart (tying ‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber) as it spends an eighth consecutive week at the top.

‘Dance Monkey’ accumulated 82.800 combined chart sales (down 0.25% from last week), but that includes 9.63 million streams (up 0.31% from last week), so I’m honestly not sure if that prevents it from ACR on the next chart.

‘Orphans’ by Coldplay dominates the national airplay chart for a fourth week running!

‘Dance Monkey’ also claims a sixth consecutive week at #1 on YouTube with its best weekly viewing figure to date, up 16.3% to 4.89 million!

BILLIE EILISH - EVERYTHING I WANTED (#3)
I’ve actually seen a lot of people surprised about a sudden new Billie Eilish single out of nowhere, but I’m actually not, given that none of her album singles since ‘Bad Guy’ have really gained attention. That said, I’m glad she’s actually opted to potentially move into a new era, because I can see a lot of potential for this! For one, she’s substituted her signature deeper & darker tone, for a more raspy & whispery one, which might actually far more effective here, since the production takes a step away from eeriness, but focuses more on the softer side, with that gentle piano line accompanied with light claps. It’s a bit restrained to really add the swell in the hook that we’re used to, but then we get to the content, where you’d argue it might be a good pairing after all. In which case, Billie discusses about a nightmare where she achieved all that she wanted, but then committed suicide discovering that nobody really cared for her in the first place, with only the reassurance from her brother Finneas that this wouldn’t actually be the case in reality. For a song that ventures outside of what made her style so unique to begin with, it still connects with me surprisingly well, so if she stays in this lane, I’d certainly be on board with that! As it is, strong 8/10 from me!

LEWIS CAPALDI - BEFORE YOU GO (#19)
So I literally only released today that Lewis Capaldi put out an extended version of his debut album recently, which is what caused this song to debut despite only being out for part of the tracking week! That said, this is the kind of track that just hits deeper the more you listen to it. Lewis, as always, showcases his powerfully raw vocals throughout the song, which are amazing as usual, although I’m not sure if it impacts as hard as it could given the lively guitars that open the song & the thumping beat that joins it at the start of the second verse! Regardless, one thing I can’t deny is how personal the content is, where he’s in the aftermath about someone commiting suicide & he’s repeatedly questioning if he could’ve done anything to prevent it. Once again, this hits on a level that is both impressive & emotional, even if it’s probably not got the radio potential to challenge, say, ‘Someone You Loved’ nor ‘Bruises’ on airplay. Still a really awesome song though, so for me, solid 8/10!

TORY LANEZ & T-PAIN - JERRY SPRUNGER (#32)
I’ve been hearing very mixed responses for this song across YouTube & other social media all week, which didn’t really give me any kind of expectations for this given that I never really cared all that much for ‘I’m Sprung’ by T-Pain, which this song tries to remake. That being said, this does a lot less than you’d expect to build on the original mid-2000’s R&B tune, with the only possible improvement being that T-Pain at least sounds a bit less awkward here. That said, most of the problems still remain; the production is notably weak across the board (particularly the bass & snares having absolutely no substance whatsoever), there’s far too much autotune than is actually required, Tory Lanez somehow sounding less memorable than T-Pain & when you combine all of this together, the lyrics are way less $exy than they’re trying to be. Really, it’s more disposable than outright terrible, but for both artists, especially T-Pain, that’s still so disappointing! Light 4/10 for this!

HARRY STYLES - WATERMELON SUGAR (#35)
So I’m really excited for that new Harry Styles album next month, even if I’m not expecting it to reach the levels of exceptional performance that we got on his debut album. I mean, I’ve always liked ‘Lights Up’, but it felt a lot more modern that some of his biggest solo hits have been & as for this… it certainly feels mid-tempo & refreshing at the start, but I do feel that Harry’s vocals might not stand out in the same way this time around, probably in the dynamic that he’s shown before, since he’s certainly got the range later on in the track, particularly showing off his upper register. I’m more impressed with the instrumentation, especially the fuzzy guitar & the euphoric trumpets that close the song, which is really where the whole thing comes to live! In other words, I do like this on first listen, but I don’t feel it’s going to be a stand-out track on ‘Fine Line’ when that album comes out next month. For that, light 7/10!

On the albums chart, ‘Spectrum’ becomes Westlife’s eighth #1! Their first studio album in nine years shifted 63,000 chart sales across all formats over the past seven days.

The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Courage’ by Celine Dion (debuts at #2, highest charting album in 17 years), ‘Back Together’ by Michael Ball & Alfie Boe (2-3), ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (8-4) & ‘Odyssey - Greatest Hits Live’ by Take That (debuts at #5).

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Own It’ by Stormzy ft Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy, ‘One I’ve Been Missing’ by Little Mix, ‘Leaving My Love Behind’ by Lewis Capaldi, ‘Loyal’ by PARTYNEXTDOOR ft Drake, ‘French Kisses’ by ZieZie & Aitch, ‘New Dior’ by DigDat ft D-Block Europe, 'We Got Love' by Sigala ft Ella Henderson & maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hi Piran!
First of all, I can finally hear everything now, my right ear can hear again!
Now, the chart observations.
I think this might be Dance Monkey's final week at now, considering the streaming numbers I've looked up on kworb.net, maybe this might be the chance for Dua or Billie in there, but it'll probably be Lewis Capaldi with his new single.
And speaking of Billie, I love that she's #3 in the UK and hopefully it'll also get a huge gain in the US, in Germany she's placed a high #9.
And as for Lewis, "Before You Go" is decent at first listen, could grow on me in a couple of days.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of "Jerry Sprunger", since I didn't like "I'm Sprung" by T-Pain and Tory Lanez remaking this, it's really bad. T-Pain is better than this.
"Watermelon Sugar" is a decent, not as great as "Lights Up", but again, this could grow on me and I can't wait for his new album.
Congratulations to Westlife, they've deserved their eighth #1!
Out of the top 40 predictions, I would like to see "Own It" and "We Got Love" make it!
Great observations as always! And as for your chart, well I'll to it!

avatar

Piran

3

Hey Sergej! :)

That's perfect! Glad your hearing's all better.

Yeah, while 'Dance Monkey' went up on overall streams this week, it might've actually gone down in sales-equivalent streams, since it mostly got a massive boost from YouTube, as mentioned earlier on in my review. If that's true, 'Dance Monkey' is indeed heading for ACR for the following week, making this its final week at #1.

'Everything I Wanted' has been doing so well worldwide at the moment. In fact, it might end up becoming her second biggest single after 'Bad Guy' so far!

Looks we mostly agree on the debuts then! 'Own It' should almost certainly be entering the Top 40 next week, but not too sure on 'We Got Love' at the moment.

I'm looking forward to seeing your new personal chart too whenever that's up!

avatar

David N'jama

3

Hey Piran it's been a long time since I commented :)

Nice reviews as usual but "Jerry springer" by Tory Lanez deserve way more than a 4. Then again, it took weeks to grow on me maybe it might be the same for you too. Although looking at iTunes and Spotify positions it might not be here next week.

Oh can you give the Remix of "Lover" by Taylor Swift and Shawn mendes a score, at least considering the fact that it's the reason for the re-entry.

avatar

Piran

2

Hey David! How you doing? :)

Eh, I personally couldn't get into 'Jerry Sprunger', but I've actually only heard it a couple of times in full, so that rating could change a lot over the next week, for better or worse, haha.

Regarding 'Lover', the original is a 10/10, while the remix is an 8/10!

avatar

David N'jama

2

I'm all good Piran. :)

Hopefully, for better ;-). It's a cool R&B vibe.

Okay, I agree with you on that rating but I'm really into the remix for the time being.

avatar

Piran

2

I thought Taylor & Shawn harmonised well in the remix, but I wasn't such a fan of the production at the start of the song this time round & I do feel that Shawn struggled in his upper register. That said, Taylor sounds so pure as always & the songwriting is still absolutely awesome! :D

avatar

Foxes

3

Hey Piran! I definitely like seeing 'Dance Monkey' get its 8th week at #1, and https://urlzs.com/itCd3 it's ACR clock has been reset, amazingly, so it could potentially reach 11+ weeks at #1 now! , if it manages to climb on one of those weeks as well it could even challenge for Christmas #1! I'm liking that rebound for 'Bruises', and I really like that 'ROXANNE' was able to climb into the Top 10 like I predicted last week, even if I did expect it to be a bit higher. The climb for 'hot girl bummer' and rebound for 'Professor X' are both good, and I like the small climb for 'Don't Rush' but that massive drop for 'Paper Cuts' is disappointing.
There's only 4 debuts this week, so definitely much easier to review them all than the 16 I went over last week! Firstly there's 'everything i wanted', and honestly this may be my favourite solo Billie Eilish track to date (though I still prefer 'lovely' with Khalid). I didn't mind the darker production in her previous tracks, but I think it was the mostly the vocals that put me off before. This track, with a much softer and somewhat haunting vocals and production, connects with me much better, so a light - solid 7/10 for this! As for 'Before You Go', I really like the deeper and more personal style of track shown here. Lewis' signature powerful and heartfelt vocals also really fit well here, and the lyrics are incredibly meaningful, so I'd give this a light 8/10 for now. 'Jerry Sprunger' is pretty boring for me, nothing exceptionally bad but also nothing particularly good, it's just remarkably unremarkable. I literally just checked it out for the first time not 5 minutes ago and can barely even remember what it sounds like! Light 5/10 here. 'Watermelon Sugar' is actually pretty decent for me, slightly better than 'Lights Up' and significantly better than 'Sign of the Times' for me, so a light 7/10 from me.
Last week I predicted that it'd be a battle between 'Don't Start Now' and 'everything i wanted' for next week's #1, but right now it seems very clear that, if it isn't 'Dance Monkey', it'll be between 'Before You Go' and 'Own It'. The former is of course currently a strong #1 on iTunes and #2 on both Spotify and Apple Music, and while we don't yet have the figures for the full first day of the latter, it's currently #6 & #5 and climbing fast on both iTunes and Apple Music, respectively (it's moved 10-5 on Apple Music since I checked just a few hours ago)! Other than that, it looks like it'll be another relatively quiet week, as I'm not really sure what else could debut. The tense battle for #1 should make up for the lack of debuts, though!

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Gameskiller! :)

I'd be very surprised if 'Dance Monkey' was Christmas #1 unless it got some kind of a remix, especially when we've already covered some of the other big contenders! That said, it's incredible that it actually managed to barely survive ACR this week, which could put up to 11 weeks at #1 as you mentioned.

Really, 'Before You Go' is its only contender at the moment, but despite clear sales dominance from Lewis Capaldi, Tones & I just about has an edge on streaming, which will probably keep her out in front (if the ACR clock being released for the latter is actually confirmed, we'll find that part out tomorrow!).

Looks we agree on all of the debuts this week though & my review was a lot easier this time round, since I was only covering four new entries this week instead of the nine last week, haha! It's a bit of a shame that neither 'Don't Start Now' nor 'Everything I Wanted' will go to #1 now, but at least both were Top 3 hits with the early signs of good longevity.

Finally, as you might've seen in other comments, I'll start full-time work next month, which could cause the style of review that I do now to change dramatically! Honestly, most weeks from now on are just going to be a much shorter summary of each song, maybe even only a rating. Just thought I'd make you & all the others aware of that now!

avatar

Foxes

Yeah, I don't think 'Dance Monkey' is very likely to be Christmas #1, but I also wouldn't rule it out completely just yet! It seems like the most likely to be #1 next week, since it's #1 on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify at the moment, and it doesn't really show any signs of slowing down soon. I do think it has a real potential to reach 11 weeks, and if it somehow miraculously avoids ACR again then it'll certainly at least be a contender for Christmas #1!
'Before You Go' does definitely look like the most likely to beat 'Dance Monkey' next week, though I'm pretty sure that'll end up at #2, as the First Look shows. I think the entire Top 3 in the First Look will remain like that in the final chart, though 'Own It' is now at #2 on Apple Music so I wouldn't be certain that it won't end up at #2 in the final chart, even if 'Before You Go' is more likely! Personally, of course I'm rooting for 'Own It' to reach #1, either this week or after 'Heavy Is The Head' for Christmas #1 - it's gotten an absolutely monstrous 204 streams from me over the weekend! By contrast, 'Paper Cuts', at #2, has just 4 streams so far, and 'Own It' is already my 7th most streamed track of 2019!
Congrats on your new job! It definitely makes sense to start doing shorter reviews, since I'm sure these take you a long time to write out every week, and you should probably be focusing on the job more. Best of luck with it! :D

Yeah, I'm not sure why 'Dance Monkey' would've been brought off ACR this week. I know it got massive YouTube gains & even climbed in some other streaming platforms, but commercially, it got no promotion to give it a boost among UK audiences.

I agree that both 'Before You Go' & 'Own It' will have to settle for #2 & #3 respectively this week, although I'd say the latter is the biggest contender of the three songs mentioned to become this year's Christmas #1!

Thanks! I'll still upload a Crown Note chart each week, but yeah, I definitely want to spend more time getting trained on the job than making music reviews, haha! :D
