How do you find a peak chart position for a song that didn't make the top 100?

avatar

Mrsliver

2

What do you mean?

LR

lance rogers

0

My question is self explanatory but just for you here goes.
I read that 'Hand in glove' by the smiths (not the version with Sandie Shaw) reached a peak position of 124. Since only the top 100 is published, how is it possible to verify what I read?

How is Positions still number one? :-/ Dull, dull, dull. The bottom half of the top 10 is definitely better than the top half for me this week.

Also, an entire year in the Top 40 as consecutive weeks for Blinding Lights is definitely worth a mention. I don't remember that ever happening before! Could be wrong but I can't think what else managed it. Even Dance Monkey only managed 50.

*thinks out loud*: No, wait, I remember thinking this about Thinking Out Loud as well so that must have managed it too.

Ooh... I’ll have to think of a Top 10, but my three favourites would be: ‘Christmas Tree Farm’, ‘Underneath The Tree’ & ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, in that order. :)

John Van Der Kiste

1

Three to start with: 'Father Christmas' by The Kinks; 'Run with The Fox', Chris Squire and Alan White; 'Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let it Snow', by Sweet (a 2000s line-up, which still features Andy Scott from the original band's glam rock 70s heyday). You'll find them all on Youtube. Oh, and 'Merry Xmas Everybody' by Slade, highest position reached as above, 1, correct, but 'I Wish...Everyday' by Wizzard, highest position 4 not 10!

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (27/11/2020 - 04/12/2020)

🔮 (Negative)

1) I think just about everybody here (even some of the die-hard Arianators!), are getting tired seeing ‘Positions’ at #1! Yeah, of course a lead single from a huge global popstar like Ariana Grande was going to top the charts
but for five consecutive weeks?! This better not pass ‘Thank U, Next’ as her longest leader.

2) I don’t know if it’s a trend in 2020, but I just can’t connect with neither Shawn’s nor JB’s music! For the former, if it’s trying to go for more of a rock edge with his upcoming album
honestly, for as much as I’m not really all that sold on ‘Wonder’, he at least had some real punch there! Instead, he just sounds really boring & unengaged here, with really blocky & flat production that wouldn’t even do him any justice anyway. Sure, the content does have a more interesting theme behind it this time, but JB can’t really add anything onto that! Like I said, this is really not clicking for me & it’s so frustrating, because I know both artists have way more talent in them, e.g. ‘Something Big’, There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back’ & ‘If I Can’t Have You’ for Shawn Mendes, along with ‘What Do You Mean?’, ‘Sorry’ & ‘Cold Water’ for Justin Bieber... to name only a few! Both of them need to go back to those kind of songs & for as mean as it sounds, I actually hope this tanks in order for them to realise that.

3) Mind you, at least ‘Wonder’ doesn’t have the wailing & incredibly forgettable flow that ‘Whoopty’ does, so to see absolutely blow up on Spotify & almost crack the Top 10 is truly concerning! Trust me, if I have a “strongly negative” section, the gain for this would probably be in it.

4) I’ve just given up on ‘Diamonds’ hitting the Top 10 at this point! Sam Smith, I’m so sorry, you deserved way better than this with such an anthem.

5) Why the heck is ‘Loading’ back in?! Those trumpets are so bad that I can’t focus on anything else to do with the song.

🟠 (Mixed)

1) I can’t remember if I’ve said this before, but I actually knew a lot about BTS & even supported some of the native hits before they even touched the UK charts, so it’s kind of cool that they’re at the point now where they can sell literally tens of thousands of copies, even if it isn’t in English! Unfortunately, this one cooled off me a fair bit throughout the week. Sure, I really like the gentle production & the smooth vocals, but it does feel like some of the members sound very strained when they push into their upper range & it wouldn’t go off live at all in my opinion! The description of life events has been a key part of what BTS really good songwriters, but this just doesn’t land in the same way for me & it sounds more like a track that should be left as a deep-cut. Again, this isn’t bad, but don’t expect this to have the same kind of longevity that ‘Dynamite’ had, because I doubt it’ll even come close to that!

2) I don’t know how it managed it, but ‘Blinding Lights’ is still here! Don’t get me wrong, I still love the song & it didn’t even leave my own chart all that long ago, but man, 52 weeks inside the Official Chart is too much for any song. I said it about ‘Dance Monkey’ & I’ll say it again here, but sometimes, you’ve just got to let a huge smash go for a while before you genuinely realise how awesome it is! I’m impressed that it hit this significant milestone, but yeah, we need to drop it for something far newer now (maybe even an upcoming Christmas song?).

3) So I only heard ‘Plugged In Freestyle’ for the first time during the chart show
the drill-inspired beat was definitely a right fit for Fumez The Engineer’s flow, but I’m not really sure how much hype he brings to this as an MC. Again, after only one listen, that’s all I can say on it for now, but overall, while I see the appeal behind this, I don’t think it’s on a solid enough level to stick with me personally.

4) Magic always seems to happen on the albums chart whenever Michael Ball & Alfie Boe work together! It’s not really my particular style of music, but I’ll tell you this, it’s definitely going to get a second week on Christmas week for sure.

🟱 (Positive)

1) While there wasn’t really much action at the very top, I adore seeing ‘Levitating’ break through into the Top 5! I said that this would be a successful single choice from the day ‘Future Nostalgia’ was released & exactly eight months later, I’m so happy to say that I was right. The DaBaby remix is fire too.

2) Speaking of Dua
okay, I was honestly unsure about how well ‘Prisoner’ would hold up, but I’ll tell you what, I’m so glad that it’s the highest debut of the week! Not only do Dua & MIley have amazing chemistry & charisma in this, but the latter brings back her intensely raw vocals, which the more I’m hearing them, the more I believe that’s the reason that she’s getting a second wind in 2020. The guitar groove & the interpolation on the disco classic ‘Physical’ (also a Dua reference) are really cool features too! I don’t know how this’ll get promoted with both ‘Levitating’ & ‘Midnight Sky’ both still performing even better, but yeah, I really hope this catches onto the radio early & doesn’t get dropped now ahead of the inevitable festive takeover. Awesome collaboration!

3) One word
Christmas! Okay, the insanely huge jump for Mariah is the highlight (especially considering we’re still not even in December yet!), but I honestly either like or love every other festive song here too, even if the inevitable & ginormous takeover throughout the next month will undoubtedly get a little annoying if it’s starting this soon, haha.

4) Finally
a EDM song that I recommend before it’s picked up on airwaves is slowly becoming a real dark horse in the charts! The fact that this summery banger is doing so well on downloads despite the country not having the right weather nor situation for it right now is a really promising sign for dance music in 2020 & it shows how optimistic some music fans are about the future. If it can do the same throughout December, then it might even start 2021 in a better position than it is now!

5) Netflix & PS5, you’ve just got a Post Malone tune that’s aged amazingly well for me back into the Top 40, so thank you so much! Since it came off ACR this week, it might not even drop away that fast either. This reminds me of far simpler times!

6) On the other hand, while I’m indifferent on ‘Holy’ & ‘Lemonade’ finally getting put on ACR this week, it did clear out both ‘Daisy’ & ‘Put Your Records On’, which is certainly a step in the right direction! I’m still baffled that the latter two even got this far at all, but hey, at least they’re both a thing of the past now.

Thanks for reading everyone! Have a good weekend. :)

avatar

4

loading is back because i’m overplaying it? sorry, i love that song! 😂

yeah, thank u next is a tune, positions better not tie or beat that song in weeks at number 1. also, 52 weeks is too much for any song (unless it’s by billie eilish), so even if i did like blinding lights, it has to go.

unsurprisingly, i love that christmas songs are back. i see bublé is coming out of hibernation... :P

avatar

Piran

2

A bit of advice on ‘Loading’... please overplay another song, as I hate that one! :P

I might take a masterpiece like ‘Love Story’ getting a full year inside Top 40, but for as good as ‘Blinding Lights’ is, it’s not on that level, haha. :)

Yeah, Bublé has fully defrosted now! ;)

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

Sam Smith has already promoted 'Diamonds' couple times in the UK including Strictly, Graham Norton and the MTV EMA's. Hopefully he is still going to promote the on other UK shows like This Morning or Jonathan Ross Show as this will hopefully increase the chances of the song being on the Top 10 or a little Remix version of the song would help to feature another singer. You have got to believe that Capitol Records are promoting the out of that song so fingers crossed that Sam will perform this song on other UK shows. Chances are that it will happen

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

I definitely see the song hit the Top 10 because I am sure that the promotion is not over. I bet you 80% that I will be right.

It’s obviously not true, but I was just going along with the joke, haha.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, well summarised actually!

‘Positions’ isn’t special enough to spend five consecutive weeks at #1 for me, although I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was at the top next week & the week after too. :/

avatar

Piran

1

I really hope that you are somehow right! :D

I guess it’s still got a chance until several festive songs eclipse it or it gets struck by ACR, whichever comes first.

avatar

Mrsliver

2

I mean at this point he does only appear at Christmas

JB

Jack Brooks

1

I was hoping 'Therefore I Am' was going to overtake it this week. My personal pick for the next Number 1 would have been Midnight Sky but I know that ship has likely sailed now.

avatar

Piran

1

‘Midnight Sky’ won’t be teaching #1 sadly, but it’ll probably gain next week (potentially to a new peak), thanks to Miley’s new album being released back on Friday. :)

avatar

Piran

1

Haha, true! :P

JB

Jack Brooks

1

True, i'm a fan of 'Prisoner' as well so i'm hoping that rises further up the charts next week.

avatar

Hopefully it’ll rebound when more streaming data comes in. :)

avatar

Joshua Sombra

1

Don't lose hope on 'Diamonds' as it may struggle to rise up as they probably putting it on ACR for a bit as the Christmas songs are coming back to the charts so when they have had it's time then hopefully some songs including 'Diamonds will gain a new peak.
