Why are so many hit songs this year so bland? Aside from "Shotgun", every song in the top 5 this week is just so boring! There's nothing creative or memorable about them that'll make me want to go back to listen to them again. From a hit song producer like Benny Blanco, I expected something better. And as for Calvin Harris this year, these have to be some of the worst songs I've ever heard from him, period.

This is the strangest Chart I have ever seen. They really need to do something about it.

… and now ALL the chart stats are wrong as everything in this weeks chart has an extra week in it's history, how many times has this happened before putting the stats out.

How is Jason Derulo's new song 'Goodbye' a re-entry? Why hasn't this utter travesty of a chart been fixed yet?

24 hours on and this chart still looks a mess. What kind of people run this site?!

What in is this mess?? Every week this website becomes a greater disaster.

If this continues, then The Singles Chart is dangerously close to losing all credibility. Not one new entry - really? I think there is something seriously wrong in how the chart is composed, when we keep getting virtually the same chart every week - made up of the same niche "artists" . Radios 1, 2 and 6 have loads of great new singles on their playlists .The chart - and the industry as a whole to survive has got to be more inclusive - particularly to new songs from more established artists which tend to go under the radar .

I think it's a mistake by OCC! There are new entries in this top 100 e.g. Homerton B by Unknown T... but it looks like they are being shown as re-entries for some reason!

Piran

Yeah, same can be said about 'Idol'; this was obviously its debut week, but it appears as a re-entry too.
Definitely sounds like a technical problem with the website, but at least better than a couple of weeks ago where the full Top 100 wasn't even available for like two days after it should've been.

It always a pleasure to observe workers who have great pride in their work and attention to detail. Last week we were kept guessing while they fine tuned the chart and posted it on the Sunday. This was obviously in preparation for the, surprisingly under publicised, expanded top 200. It also must be a record week for re-entries, and shared positions, a bold move to include other versions of the same song in the listings. Most noteworthy is the fact not 1 single new entry has managed to force it's way into the top 200. The doom mongers who think the chart has got stale can eat their hats now. I for one applaud the OCC for blocking every attempt to have charts listed elsewhere by 2nd rate nobodies, who can not possibly compete with this level of excellence.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Eastside’ by Benny Blanco, Halsey & Khalid is the new #1 single this week! It becomes Benny’s first #1 as a credited artist, Halsey’s second & Khalid’s first. Benny Blanco has either co-written or produced 11 other #1s!

- ‘Eastside’s total units for this week stand at just shy of 50,000, which includes the 5.8 million streams it received.

- To give an indication of how close the race for #1 was this week: ‘Promises’, ‘Shotgun’ & ‘Eastside’ were all leading at different times throughout the week. ‘Promises’ had the lead only two days ago, but fell a mere 139 copies short yesterday, but next week, I would predict it to reach the top.

- ‘Promises’ does, however, reach #1 on the national airplay chart.

- Thanks to his beef with Logan Paul, ‘On Point’ by KSI debuts at #1 on the YouTube chart with 3.29 million views across the country this past week.

- BTS FT NICKI MINAJ – IDOL (#21)
Regardless of the quality of this song, I’m just really happy a K-Pop group finally charted in the UK’s Top 40! Fortunately, this is one of the group’s better song; all members bring so much energy & passion in their delivery, either through solid upper ranges or awesome complex flows (including Nicki Minaj doing the latter in the remix to this song). The chorus is as catchy as ever & I absolutely adore the heavy drop in the hook too. The lyrics are certainly confident, almost too confident at times, but when you watch this video & look at their previous hits, I can totally see why this band has a huge social following. So far, I’m very impressed, strong 8/10 here!

- FREYA RIDINGS – LOST WITHOUT YOU (#36)
I didn’t pay much attention to this song when it first came out, but I’m glad I do now, because this has grown on me so much! The gentle pianos & acoustic strums set the tone for this emotional upcoming hit, where she expresses how she’s tried to hold back tears about saying goodbye to a lover, but it becomes too much for her & she admits to releasing those feelings! That said, the real star of this song is Freya Ridings herself; her range is very broad, particularly switching away & back to those robust tones, as well as her operatic deep register that sets the solemn tone to this song. It’s amazing how well she sells this & I think we’ve got a big star coming up with this song, or at least in the alt-pop world. For now, I really want the streams to catch up for this considering it already has the good sales it deserves. A 9/10 for me; only the second song to get that high of a rating since I started these scores!

- PINKFONG – BABY SHARK (#37)
For as hilarious as it is to see what was originally a popular Far East children’s song turn into a dance challenge, when I look back at the other themes to kids’ shows that have become hits, I think I’d take this over them. Yeah, it’s ridiculously repetitive, but the impressions of each of the sharks are just very funny & the production has a quirky bounce to it to make this less annoying to me as it should be. I could see myself getting tired of this very quickly, but for now, it’s something different at least, so 7/10 at the moment.

- On the albums chart, ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ is back atop the albums chart for a fifth non-consecutive week, with a 2,000 combined sales lead.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (3-2, most downloaded album of the week), ‘Sweetener’ by Ariana Grande (1-3, most streamed album of the week), ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (stationary at #4) & ‘Scorpion’ by Drake (stationary at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Faith’s Song’ by Amy Wadge, ‘Kamikaze’ by Eminem, ‘Be Alright’ by Dean Lewis, 'Beautiful' by Bazzi ft Camila Cabello, 'Happy Now' by Zedd & Elley Duhe, 'Thunderclouds' by LSD (Labrinth, Sia & Diplo) & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! I was extremely surprised to hear that 'Eastside' was the #1, but I definitely like it! I think that 'Promises' will be #1 next week as well, but that's what I said last week so we'll see how it turns out. It is leading on Spotify and iTunes, but it was for most, if not all of last week and it still just missed out. Currently 'Eastside' is ahead of it on Apple Music (it's at #2 while 'Promises' is at #4, with Eminem tracks at #1, #3 and #5), and since Apple Music streams are all on the 100:1 ratio it will probably be very close next week as well.

I wasn't really a fan of any of the new entries this week, but 'Lost Without You' was definitely the best of them for me. 'IDOL' wasn't really that great for me and 'Baby Shark' is more annoying than funny for me. I do love that 'Be Alright' is looking quite likely to enter the Top 40 next week though, and that 'Beautiful' could make it as well!

In terms of the Eminem tracks for next week, 'The Ringer' and probably 'Lucky You' should make Top 10 debuts next week, and definitely Top 20, while 'Greatest' will probably be Top 20 as well. He would of course have plenty of others in the Top 40 as well if he weren't limited to 3 songs.

I'm most interested in the albums chart for next week, though, as whether or not 'Kamikaze' reaches #1 will be either the continuation or the end of a 10+ year streak for Eminem. 'Kamikaze' would be his 9th consecutive #1 album if it makes it, which I'm pretty sure would be a record. If it doesn't make it, though, it'll end his streak of 8 which would be huge. Of course 'Kamikaze' will dominate on streaming, but the lack of a physical release and with how well the soundtracks are doing on physical and digital sales (they're not doing badly on streaming either) could pose a real challenge. I'm very interested to see how it plays out!

Hey Gameskiller! :)
I was certainly very surprised that 'Eastside' came out on top too, but even though 'Promises' was ahead of it on Spotify all week & especially on sales, it was further behind it on other paid streaming services. It must have been by a fair bit if it allowed 'Eastside' to overtake a day before the end of the tracking week.
'Lost Without You' should climb a fair bit further if its streaming improves, since it recently hit the Top 10 on iTunes & seems fairly steady there.
I really liked 'Idol', although I could see it dying out fast on me & especially on the Official Chart too. 'Baby Shark' is actually more funny than annoying to me to be honest.
'The Ringer' is probably going to debut in the Top 10 taking a look at those nearly dominant streaming numbers, but I'm not sure if any other tracks will be downloaded or hold up on Spotify throughout the week to make the Top 10, although you're probably going to be right about 'Greatest' debuting in the Top 20.
It's incredible to think Eminem has had that many consecutive #1s, yet of the nine #1 singles he's had, none of them have got multiple weeks at the top!
I could see 'Kamikaze' debuting at #3 behind those two soundtracks, but I think it'll end up as the most streamed album of the week looking at how the individual tracks are doing in that component.

avatar

Foxes

I think the main reason that 'Eastside' was able to overtake at the last minute is because it's doing better on Apple Music, so it probably got a higher proportion of paid streams while 'Promises' got more free streams.
'Lost Without You' did climb on the most recent Spotify chart, but it's still only at #123. It should improve, though, so I can definitely see it climbing. I doubt that 'IDOL' will even be in the Top 100 next week, to be honest. It's not even in the Spotify or Apple Music Top 200s, and is way down at #97 on the iTunes chart.
I think that 'Lucky You' probably has the best long-term shot for songs from 'Kamikaze'. It's the only song from the album that didn't drop on Spotify on the 2nd day as it holds at #5, and it's the only one of the big 3 that has an official YouTube audio so far, where it debuted at #13 on 31/08. It also climbed to #1 on the global Spotify chart today, so it's definitely getting the most recognition. 'The Ringer' will probably debut higher next week, but I think that 'Lucky You' will last longer.
'Kamikaze' might be able to get enough streams to debut at #1, but it'll be tough. All of the songs debuted in the Top 30 and are all still in the Top 40 today on Spotify, and all are still in the Top 30 on Apple Music, and it is quite far ahead on iTunes currently, at #1 while 'The Greatest Showman' is #3 and 'Mamma Mia' is #7, but the lack of a physical release will hurt it.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, it appears that Apple Music is probably the biggest subscription based streaming service after Spotify, at least in the UK.
What's also helping 'Lost Without You' is the amount of TV airplay it's been getting, mostly from advertisement in radio intervals & the last series of 'Love Island'.
I seem to have missed 'Lucky You', but how's it doing on sales currently? Not that they really matter in the charts that much anymore.

avatar

Foxes

1

I'm not really sure whether Spotify or Apple Music has more subscribers in the UK. I know that Spotify has more users in total, and I know that Spotify has the most subscribers globally, but I'm not sure about the UK. If the US is anything to go off, they'll both be about equal.
As with all the tracks from 'Kamikaze', 'Lucky You' isn't doing great on sales. It's currently at #34 on iTunes, though it is the 3rd biggest track from 'Kamikaze'. Like you said, though, sales aren't really that important anymore, and it is getting very good streams.

avatar

Piran

1

As long as it remains the third biggest from 'Kamikaze' & doesn't drop below that, it'll definitely debut next week.
Wow... I'd have thought the UK would have way more Spotify users than Apple Music ones.
There are a few songs in the Top 40 of the sales chart now that aren't in the Top 40 overall, but usually only one or two for the streaming chart.

avatar

Foxes

The UK does have more Spotify users, but since Spotify has both a paid and free tier while Apple Music is only paid they're much closer in terms of subscribers. They're both about equal in the US, but in most of Europe Spotify has way more subscribers, so I'd expect that the UK is probably somewhere in between. Globally, Spotify had 83m subscribers as of the end of July while Apple Music had 50m by the end of June, but in the US both have just over 20m.
Yeah, 'Lucky You' will definitely have a big debut next week. I would probably predict either low Top 10 or just outside of it, and I can see it climbing in the coming weeks as well, while I think the other tracks will fall.
I also just saw your comment on Crownnote about 'Havana' passing 1bn streams, but it's not quite there yet. It is EXTREMELY close, at 999.5m, so it should pass it by tomorrow! 'God's Plan' did just pass 1bn streams today, though, which now makes Drake the 3rd artist to have 2 songs reach the milestone. Ed Sheeran's done it with 'Shape of You' (which looks likely to pass 2bn before the end of the year, currently at 1.89bn!) and 'Thinking Out Loud' (and 'Photograph' is very close), while Justin Beiber's done it as a lead artist on 'Love Yourself' and 'Sorry', and as a featured artist on 'Despacito (Remix)'.

avatar

Piran

1

So could Ed be about to become the first ever lead artist to have three songs pass the 1 billion milestone soon then? :D
Maybe Spotify's cumulative numbers haven't updated yet, but this is where I found out from:
https://twitter.com/chartdata/status/1036312803018043392

avatar

Foxes

0

It's close. Ed's 'Photograph' is at 952m and is #16 in terms of the most streamed songs on Spotify, while Beiber's 'What Do You Mean?' is at 943m and is #17. 'Photograph' should reach 1bn first, but 'What Do You Mean?' will follow soon after. Beiber also has his feature on 'Let Me Love You', which is at 983m and is #15, and also has his feature on 'Cold Water', which is at 940m and #18, so Beiber will have 6 in total soon - 3 as a lead artist and 3 as a featured.
I think Spotify updates their numbers at the end of each day, so it's entirely possible that 'Havana' has reached 1bn streams by now. Which is absolutely amazing! I love that she's the first female artist to achieve it! Dua Lipa should be the second, as 'New Rules' is at 923m (#19) at the moment, which I love as well!

avatar

Piran

1

I'm not sure which song out of 'Photograph' or 'What Do You Mean' is getting more streams weekly at the moment, although I'd guess it's the former.
Like you said, 'God's Plan' will probably be the next song after 'Havana' to hit 1 billion & yeah, it seems like there's nothing that could overtake 'New Rules' before it hits that milestone either.
By the way, are you excited for her new single with Mark Ronson on Friday? I think that could easily get a Top 10 debut & probably go on to be a future #1, given what a success 'Uptown Funk' is & how hyped the song has been online. ;)

avatar

Foxes

0

Yeah, 'Photograph' is definitely getting more streams. It's regularly near the bottom of the global Top 200, and was #193 with 3.9m streams for the week ending 30/08. 'What Do You Mean?', however, hasn't been in the Top 200 for as long as I've checked.
'God's Plan' has actually already passed 1bn, with 1.0004bn on Spotify, which means it's probably a bit higher now.
I didn't even know that she had a new single with Mark Ronson, but now that I do I'm definitely hyped for it! I really like most of Dua's music, and I really like 'Uptown Funk' as well, so I should like it! A Top 10 debut is definitely a possibility, as is a future #1! Though we'll have to see how it does before we can really predict where it's going to end up.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, Dua Lipa's debut album has grown on me with every listen & I think she'll be an even bigger global superstar in a couple of years from now. :)
So 'Photograph' might pass 1 billion at little bit after 2018 finishes. I was hoping it'd get the job done this year, but it's still doing impressively well for a song that didn't even go Top 10 here, although it's really done better internationally. The official video to it is one of my favourites of his!
Interestingly, 'God's Plan' is the most viewed English music video that came out in 2018, passing 800 million views a few hours ago. The other four songs are in Spanish.

avatar

Foxes

0

If 'Photograph' carries on the way it does, getting ~3.85m streams per week on average, it'll reach 1bn in 12-13 week's time, which would mean that it passes the mark by the end of November. If 'Shape of You' carries on as it is, averaging ~8.3m streams per week, that should also pass 2bn at about the same time! 'Perfect' should also reach 1bn by the end of February next year, which would make Ed the only artist with 4 1bn+ songs as a lead artist, this time without Bieber close behind!
It's still quite surprising that it never reached Top 10 here. It got quite a lot of radio airplay and I remember it being a very popular song. It's the same with 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', but that didn't even reach Top 40!
It doesn't surprise me that 'God's Plan' is the most viewed English music video of 2018, since it'll probably end up being the most popular song of the year, both in the UK and globally. What does surprise me is that there are 4 other music videos that got more views, and that they're all in Spanish. I know that there are a huge amount of Spanish-speaking people in the world, but I didn't expect 4 Spanish music videos to do better than 'God's Plan'.

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, somehow 12-13 weeks from now seemed later than November to me, but we don't know if that 3.85 million weekly streams are going to remain consistent though.
I'm not sure what it was really, because I don't think it did bad on sales either. Maybe it was one of those songs that sticks around forever, but gains & falls so slowly that it doesn't have the momentum to hit a strong peak (take 'Meant To Be' or 'That's What I Like' as other examples).
I guess I'm not too surprised, given that Spanish songs have always done very well on YouTube & this year has been less interesting than the previous two or three years for English songs or videos. The global success of 'Despacito' certainly helped fuel videos to Latin songs even more!

avatar

Foxes

0

I think 'Photograph' should remain consistent enough, since it's been getting somewhere in between 3.8m & 3.9m streams for the past 5 weeks, and in any week that it hasn't made the Top 200 the #200 track has always had more than 3.85m. 'Shape of You' might fall a little but should still average over 8m streams per week until the end of the year, allowing it to reach 2bn before then. 'Perfect' is the one I think will fall the most out of the 3 as it's currently averaging ~6m per week, but that should still reach 1bn before Bieber gets a 4th 1bn+ song as a lead artist.
I think you're right about 'Photograph', though. It spent 9 weeks just moving between #15 and #20, and spent 22 weeks in total in the Top 40. It just couldn't get enough momentum to climb further.

avatar

Piran

1

That's good then, well, the fact that the song came out four years on the album (& three years ago as a single) & still be borderline in the Top 200 globally on Spotify.
It doesn't surprise me that 'Shape Of You' has more weekly streams than 'Perfect'. The latter has now been on the Hot 100 chart for a year this week, but is still comfortably in the Top 25, how's that for longevity? ;)
Meanwhile, 'Shape Of You' holds the record for most weeks spent in the Top 10 in the US chart's 60 year history with 33 weeks!

avatar

Foxes

0

'Thinking Out Loud' is in a pretty similar position to 'Photograph' as well, though it seems to get 100k - 200k more streams most weeks. I'm even more impressed with 'Mr. Brrightside', though. It's another song that's borderline Top 200 globally, but that released in 2004! Some other older songs that still sneak into the Top 200 are 'Halo' by Beyoncé, 'Wonderwall' by Oasis and, of course, 'Africa' by Toto.
That's definitely incredibly impressive, for both 'Perfect' and 'Shape of You'. I don't think either of those would be likely to happen in the UK, even before ACR, but Ed seems to have extremely good longevity everywhere. 'Thinking Out Loud' is the only song to spend an entire year in the Top 40 in the UK, but I think 'Shape of You' would've managed it if not for ACR. Not to mention '÷'s 76 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 here. It even climbed back to #7 this week for a 77th week in the Top 10!

avatar

Piran

1

The original version of 'Africa' might be because of the recent Weezer cover, which has been doing well across America. I'm sure most of 'Mr Brightside's streams are coming from the UK, haha!
'Shape Of You' would probably have managed it, yeah, but what I think is also amazing is the longevity of 'This Is Me'! There's no doubt it was on ACR weeks ago now, yet it still regular appearances inside the Top 40. :D

avatar

Foxes

-1

Yeah haha, 'Mr. Brightside' is at #78 on the most recent weekly chart in the UK, while it's #200 globally.
'This is Me' is really impressive, though. Somehow it's managed to never drop lower than #43, despite being on ACR for the past 18 weeks from the looks of it!

avatar

Piran

1

It makes you wonder where 'This Is Me' would we without ACR & 'Mr Brightside' for that matter.
Either way, I think the former has a shot at being at least Top 10 for the yearly chart, maybe even Top 5 if it continues to hold up well over the next few weeks.

avatar

Foxes

0

I think the Top 5 will consist of 'God's Plan', 'One Kiss', 'These Days', 'Shotgun' and then possibly 'In My Feelings', 'Promises', or 'This is Me'. It'll definitely be Top 10 at least. It was at #4 for the first half of the year, so I think it'll be able to hold up with how well it's still doing!

It does here in the UK, there are far less people with iPhones and the only people who use apple music have an iPhone, then most of them are young people who still think iPhones are cool and loads of them will be buying downloads as cannot afford a subscription and anybody of the older generation with iPhones are more likely to download as they sswitched to streaming yet. Spotify is huge in the UK as is deeper and also Amazon, apple music has very little share. Be great if OCC could run an article about it.
