2

You speak Italian too?! Awesome! :D

avatar

Damián

3

hahha, yep, I also speak Italian because my mum is Italian, she came to Argentina because of WW2, so I travelled to Italy many times and get some of the language, by the way, its quite similar to Spanish too.

That's interesting! It must take a long time to get there though, given the distance.

The charts is being so unfair to Dua Lipa. Totally ridiculous how both songs fell down the charts. It is wrong that this is happening. I want them songs to go back up the charts on the Top 40. I hope it happens otherwise I will be mad. She is my favourite singer and this should not be happening to her this week, full stop.

avatar

Damián

2

I think it has been totally unfair for Kylie's new single

What an eventful year for Vera Lynn. 2 new hits, one either side of her death. Three if you count the 2 different recordings of lockdown anthem We'll Meet Again. Becomes the oldest living artist to have a hit and, with a gap of 3538 weeks, the artist with the biggest span of new hits. No doubt, had she lived, would have beaten her own record again this week. What a pity she didn't live to see this one.

1

Agreed! Two hits and I like them both; they seem to have an unusual something extra that most of the rap at the moment doesn't.

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, I think it's 24kGoldn's generally fun charisma, but he also adds some really interesting instrumentation to complement it too (such as the guitars that open the song!). Not many trap artists can tick both boxes, especially when they're so new to the music scene! :)

2

Have there been any other K-Pop songs that have charted high apart from Dynamite and Gangnam Style?

avatar

Piran

0

Not this high, I don't think! 'Gentleman' was PSY's follow-up, but I'm not sure how big that song was in the UK.

EDIT: It peaked at #10 here, but like 'Gangnam Style', it was a global hit! :P

0

Yeah, so PSY wasn't actually a one-hit wonder in the UK, nor anywhere really! :P

Gangnam Style and Gentleman are the only two songs I know from him, I think Gangnam Style only reached #1 because it was a bit of a meme

Loved Flo Rida ft Sia, Take That of course, it was the single reuniting the 5 again and unbelievably wasn't number 1, and that Michel Telo's song...wtf??it was so popular in Latin America a few years ago, I can't imagine you mate singing in Portuguese and dancing to it😂😂😂😂💪💪

avatar

Piran

2

Glad you're also loving 'Wild Ones' & 'The Flood'! :)

Regarding Michel Telo, 'Ai Se Eu Te Pego' was actually really big in Europe too & since I listen to a lot of foreign language music, it was always going to capture my attention, especially when the song itself is so fun, catchy & summery, haha.

avatar

Damián

2

yes!! I absolutely love the way you know about any genre of music or worlwide music being so young! That happens to ppl who really loves music. Congrats!!
By the way, I recommend you these 2 Argie pop stars (the 2 more popular in Argentina) to listen to them, Lali and TINI, I'd love to have your opinion bout them!

avatar

Piran

1

Lali is a name I'm sure I've heard somewhere before, but I can't recall exactly how I know the name! What can you recommend from her? :)

I've heard of TINI before & I'm liking what I've heard from her so far, especially her songs with Alvero Soler & Flo Rida ('La Cintura'), Alesso ('Sad Song'), as well as Jonas Blue & Chelcee Grimes ('Wild').

avatar

Damián

2

Woww, so good to know that you enjoy TINI. She's not only popular in Argentina and Latin America but many countries of Europe because she's been a Disney LatAm actress in many series.
By the way, Lali is also popular in and abroad Argentina. She's kinda rough than Lali, more urban style. I can suggest you to listen Laligera, Una Na, Fascinada, Sin Querer Queriendo(her biggest hit to date), Un beso. Check the videos out on you tube you like fella!

avatar

Piran

1

Oh, that's cool! I didn't know she also acted, haha. :)

Honestly, when I first heard of her, I really got Camila Cabello vibes (even if TINI sings in Spanish way more often than her!). I mean that as a big compliment though, as the former is one of my favourite artists across in general right now!

I'll try to check out some of those songs you recommended before you're next online on Sunday.

COOLOCELOT’S CHART REVIEW

hey pals and gals, it’s coolocelot101. tonight i’m gonna give you a review, but before we get into the new entries, i’ll observe the moves around the top 40.

“head & heart” is number 1 for 6 weeks now... you know, i’m kinda tired of this song now! it’s still pretty good, but it’s time to move on from it. it sold 62k overall units this week. i see “dancing in the moonlight” is dropping away, that because that’s still a 10/10 from me. “on deck” rebounds massively into the top 40 too! let’s get into the top 40 entries.

BTS - DYNAMITE (#3)
i know bts and i really hate them as artists, and i know this is their first full-english song and it’s led on itunes... well, finally, a decent bts song for a change! of course, theres still issues with their vocal delivery, especially when jungkook’s falsetto in the chorus isn’t great and i can’t understand them. however, better qualities come in with the really groovy beat, and feel-good lyrics! it’ll take me a while to actually like bts, but this one is at least passable. light 6/10.

HEADIE ONE FT AJ TRACEY & STORMZY - AIN’T IT DIFFERENT (#4)
headie did a great job on “both” and “only you freestyle”, aj tracey is just really fire as an artist and stormzy put out one of my favourite records of 2019. they’ve come together to create something fire! i like that high pitched vocal layering, especially when the accompanying trap beat is awesome! then we get the deliveries... headie goes completely in on this, while aj brings a speedy flow which reminds me of “rain”, which is one of my favourite uk rap songs this year, and stormzy... do we not know him for bringing amazing verses?! my only nitpick is that each verse of theirs is too short, but that doesn’t stop the song from being good. decent 8/10, it could go up!

24KGOLDN FT IANN DIOR - MOOD (#11)
so 24kgoldn was announced as a xxl freshman this year, but i don’t know if that was the reason why this leapt up the charts. that doesn’t matter, because this is actually really good though! i like the guitar strums at the start, and like with “rockstar”, it fits well with the bass-y trap beat. i really like iann dior’s singing delivery, but sadly 24kgoldn doesn’t sound all that good in my opinion. we also have lyrics about a lover playing games and 24kgoldn wont play by her rules anymore and they’re well written to me. nice job, both of you. strong 8/10!

quick interruption to announce vera lynn’s “land of hope and glory” is back at number 17! this follows after a bbc proms controversy, and it’s number 1 on itunes as we speak.

CONAN GRAY - HEATHER (#22)
well, this went up really fast, didn’t it? this is a chilled song and i like it. to start, his vocals are very breathy and mellow, to calm you instantly, as he sings about his love for this girl but someone else likes her more. i really like the guitar strums in the verses, and the production suddenly comes up to a massive climax in the chorus, before going back to the mellow guitars in that final chorus. yeah, this was really chilled and i can see myself coming back to this - strong 7/10!

CLEAN BANDIT FT MABEL & 24KGOLDN - TICK TOCK (#36)
so this is 24kgoldn’s 2nd appearance on this review. i’m happy that clean bandit are back as i love their music... but this was very underwhelming. i like the beat that brings a sense of bounce to the song, but their usual violin comes in at the most random time possible and sounds very squeaky! i’m not really a fan of mabel’s delivery which is surprising, as she’s a great singer, and “tick tock, tick tock” comes in at some of the worst possible times. and 24kgoldn sounds more autotuned than he should be... nah, clean bandit have put out much better than this. light 5/10!

on the albums chart, the killers score their 6th number 1 album with “imploding the mirage! it debuted at number 1 with 50k chart sales.

the rest of the top 5 is: “shoot for the stars, aim for the moon” by pop smoke (4-2), “folklore” by taylor swift (2-3), “the neon” by erasure (new at 4), and “legends never die” by juice wrld (non mover at 5)

so yeah, decent week overall. i enjoyed putting this review together, and i hope you enjoyed reading. have a good weekend! :)
P.S. my top 25 favourite songs of the week will come later tonight.

5/10 for Tick tock??

sorry, i just think it’s pretty generic and the “tick tock, tick tock” comes in at random times. the beat is dope though!

I'm glad you like 'Mood' a lot & that you're giving 'Dynamite' a pass, but I have to disagree on 'Tick Tock' (a light 9/10 for me!).

Good review as usual mate! :)

thanks for the reply! :)

mood is my favourite entry of the week, i think it’d debut high on my lists! dynamite is with boy with luv on decent bts songs. tick tock might grow on me due to the great bouncy beat, but for now it ain’t really for me.

avatar

Piran

1

I could see it debuting high in my next chart too! :D

I've always been a fan of Clean Bandit (I follow them on FB), so them returning after so long certainly helped based on anticipation alone, haha.

i really like clean bandit’s music too. “stronger”, “real love”, “symphony” and “baby” are my favourites from them. nice to know that you follow them on fb too! 👍

Do not worry, sometimes it does happen with popular artists with popular songs. I am sure it will go up the Top 40 charts. You better trust me.

It has gone Top 40 before, but yeah, I'm hoping it'll be a slow burner! :)

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (28/08/2020 - 03/09/2020)

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘Lighter’ dropped back even more today, but while it’s chances of #1 are almost completely gone, I’m hoping it’ll get a resurgence thanks to the acoustic version that was released today (Ella Henderson sounds way better in the new version!).

2) I think we can rule out Top 10 peaks for both ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ & ‘Heaven On My Mind’, which absolutely !

3) ‘Blinding Lights’ is starting to drop faster! Yes, it’s had an amazing run here, but I still adore it as much as I did back when it first came out, so I was always going to hate seeing it go.
‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ just lost momentum out of nowhere! I sincerely hope it’s not out of the Top 40 by next week.

4) Unfortunately, I think ‘Rain On Me’ is going to drop out of the Top 40 in the next chart!
‘Cardigan’ continues to drop fast, but at least Radio 1 played it during the chart show again today!

5) The worst thing about this chart is Dua Lipa having a rough week, with both ‘Hallucinate’ & ‘Levitating’ both dropping out of the region today.

🟠 (Mixed)

1) ‘Wap’ looks like it might take the lead next week, given how much it closed the margin today! It’d become both Cardi B’s & Megan Thee Stallion’s first #1 single in the UK, which would continue the trend of no artists scoring multiple #1’s in 2020.

2) Both ‘Savage Love’ & ‘Go Crazy’ leave the Top 10! I still don’t hate these songs somehow, but I know they’ll get on my nerves sooner or later.

3) ‘Looking For Me’ is holding up incredibly well, but it really stalled here after the sudden boost it got last time!

4) ‘Heather’ blasted into the chart out of nowhere! The sentiment in the lyrics is sweet, but it’s just a shame that the rest of the song is a completely snoozefest. This was very nearly in the “negative” section, but the content just about saved it from getting there!

5) ‘The Woo’ absolutely crashed this week! I thought this was because of ACR at first, but no, it just had a terrible week apparently.

6) ‘Rockstar’s declines are starting to get really steep now! It’s still a decent trap song, but it’s been here for long enough now.

7) ‘On Deck’ re-entered to a new peak, which I’m indifferent on after revisiting it. It’s a fine enough drill song, but nothing extraordinary.

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Head & Heart’ held on to #1 despite close competition! I think this could be the last week it spends there, but at least it got the record for the longest consecutive chart-topper of 2020 so far.

2) ‘Dynamite’ had extremely dominant download figures, allowing it to debut in the Top 3! I’ve actually been following K-Pop for a few years (before anything other than ‘Gangnam Style’ hit the chart from the genre), so it’s really satisfying to see a Korean group do so well here, especially when ‘Dynamite’ is very fun, bright & uplifting. This is their first song entirely in English!

3) ‘Ain’t It Different’ also joins it immediately beneath it! Honestly, this is one of my favourite UK rap collaborations of the year so far. All three artists here bring incredible flows & the production is particularly menacing! This is exactly what I’m looking for in a brag-rap banger, haha.

4) Along with ‘West Ten’, AJ Tracey is back with two songs in the Top 10 once again!

5) I knew ‘Mood’ was going to become big this week, but I didn’t expect it to rank this high! This is definitely one of the most fun trap songs I’ve heard in ages. I’m rooting for this to keep climbing!

6) The legendary Vera Lynn made the Top 20 thanks to huge sales! It that her cover of ‘Land Of Hope & Glory’ wasn’t played by Radio 1, but it’s a classic nonetheless.

7) ‘Midnight Sky’ might’ve dropped from last time, but it held up far better than I was expecting it to!

8) ‘Tick Tock’ sneaks in as the lowest of the six new entries today! Clean Bandit have always been able to mix classical instrumentation & EDM production very well, which is also an awesome fit for both Mabel & 24kGoldn here (he had a good week, didn;t he?). I hope this is a slow burner!

9) On the albums chart, The Killers debuted at #1 with over a 6x lead! Honestly, while many people love this group for just ‘Mr Brightside’, I’m a fan of many other hits of theirs. Glad to see them still doing so well!

Hope you enjoyed my review everyone! Have a good weekend. :)

Try to ban it and Rule Brittania from being played at The Proms. This is the deliberate patriotic backlash. BBC U-turned to include them without lyrics after public outcry.

avatar

Piran

2

Haha, yeah, I'd never miss out on your reviews! :P

avatar

I'm not sure why they'd try to ban it! That being said, Radio 1 don't play many songs during their chart show anyway. It is disappointing though, given that those two songs are very symbolic of our country! :/

Thanks Piran! Great to see Mood at 11 and Tick Tock at 36 - TT is running to be my new no 1 this week! Head & Heart is awesome, it needs another week! I hope WAP doesn't knock it off. I'd rather BTS, Headie One, Nathan Dawe or any other top 10 did! Sad to see LFM, DITM, HOMM, FF drop, but great to see WSugar drop. Laugh Now is growing on me fast, along w Tick Tock and At Least I Had Fun (wheres that banger??) I've had i on repeat all day!

The political opinion of the average BBC employee is shame and embarresment of this country / with a heavy left bias. Dispite their (very expensive) "Diversity programme", diversity of opinion is one thing they are very weak on, while baying at the altar of every other idenitity politic (race, gender, sexuality etc). Being a symbol of this country and/or being "related" to colonialism is exactly why they wouldn't play it. They are offended on behalf of people who are not offended. Or quite the opposite: people who are proud of this country and their identity with it. Considering the debacle on Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead (#2), I'm not sure they'd play it even if it was #1 or #2..
There was a time when every top 40 single got played on the countdown (in full!) - no questions asked.

Also I agree with negative 1,2,3,4,5, mixed2,3,4,5 although Looking For Me and the woo dropping are negatives. Pretty much all EDM is :( also positive 2,3,4,5,6

I wouldnt be surprised if the sudden turn in weather has meant that more summer oriented songs such as Looking For Me, Heaven On My Mind and Dancing In The Moonlight, just a theory though

I had a friend who played for the BBC Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years and got as high as the 2nd desk in the viola section. He said even before he retired in 1997, it was an "if your face fits" organisation. Full of cliques and favouritism.

Love the chart analysis you deliver week after week dear mate. I loved this one. Shocked how both Dua's latest singles dropped off the top 40, especially the ultra hyper promoted Madonna megamix

Yeah, it's a real shame that neither of Dua Lipa's song remained in the Top 40 this week! I'm really surprised they didn't too.

I don't know! I'm hoping it'll get to seven weeks at #1 (it's already the longest consecutive leader of the year), but I'm thinking 'WAP' will take over on Friday.

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, I think summer coming to an end caused all the EDM songs to move down! :/

Anyone know the last time two songs debuted in the Top 5 in the same week?

2017. Ed sheeran

avatar

2

avatar

David N'jama

1

Yeah. There was no ACR back then also

avatar

Piran

3

You'd think with ACR being introduced more recently, we'd have more songs debuting higher up in the charts, but apparently not! :P

avatar

Rector

1

24 April this year actually. You'll Never Walk Alone and Times Like These.

avatar

Piran

2

Oh yeah, the former was #1 & the latter was #5 that week! Coincidentally, both charity singles. :)

avatar

Blank

1

I started listening to the charts in the mid 90's. 2 or 3 new entries in the top 5 was expected pretty much every week then! October '98 was the big one when the entire top 5 and a further 2 in the top 10 were new entries. Such a change now, but it's more similar to the 70s/80s chart behaviour of low entries and long climbs.

avatar

Piran

2

Even in the early 2010's, multiple Top 5 debuts happened every few weeks! It was much more common that all songs started high up & then dropped naturally, but now, everything seems to be a slow burner.

avatar

Blank

2

I had a lot of work on then, so paid less attention in charts than any other time since I started. I don't know if you're old enough to remember the hype of new releases in the CD era of before 2004? For a major act, anything less than a #1 new entry was considered a failure. I heard some entries as "low" as #4 be considered a disaster. Even minor acts with well-hyped songs were expected to enter the top 5 on debut week and was a dissapointment when they didn't

avatar

Piran

1

It was all physical CD's before 2004, right? I would've been six years old then, haha! :P

See, there were no downloads nor streaming in the charts back in the 80's & 90's! I think the bigger difference is the number of combined sales an album debuts with.

Typically, this would've been around 100-200k pure sales, but now, The Killers debuting at #1 on the albums chart with 45k combined sales is now considered "impressive"!

avatar

new acc - disqus.com/afrog69

1

Depends who the artist is. Drake, Aitch, AJ Tracey, Joel Corry is an instant success for example

avatar

Blank

1

It was all-physical for a few years after 2004! (2007 was the first download eligable on the main chart I think). 2004 saw the lowest sales on record - just 500,000 copies of all titles combined for the whole year as downloads were taking over but not chart eligible. As someone who still bought an average of 10 a week, I accounted for one in 50,000 singles sold in the whole country for the year!

80's and 90's albums? You wouldn't even get in the top 10 with 45k then. Physical sales were HUGE (there was no alternative). Today an album can go top 10 with just 5000 copies. I'm not sure that would get you in the chart (Top 100) at all in the 20th century!

avatar

Damián

1

Totally agree, new singles debuting out of top ten were considered flops

avatar

Piran

0

I don't know about Joel Corry nor Aitch yet!

Despite 'Head & Heart' going #1 for six week so far for the former, it only debuted at #15! Also, 'Safe To Say' (the latter's new single) missed the Top 40 altogether.
