Doja Cat aims for first UK Number 1 single with Paint The Town Red

Doja has some tough competition first, though...
doja cat number 1

Doja Cat is in the running for her first-ever UK Number 1 single this week with Paint The Town Red, which is predicted to climb to the top of the Official Singles Chart.

But there are less than 1,000 chart units separating Doja from her competition; Olivia Rodrigo’s Vampire (2), Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer (3), former Number 1 Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For? (4) and Peggy Gou’s It Goes Like (Nanana) (5).

Since breaking through during the pandemic with her Top 3, disco diva cut Say So, Doja has proved to be one of the most elastic and provocative new voices in pop. Her new material is a hard swerve away from the typical sonics of a pop star, with her forthcoming fourth album, Scarlet, apparently an entirely rap-based record.

Paint The Town Red is the second single from the LP, and it contains a sample of the Dionne Warwick standard Walk On By. Last week, Paint The Town Red reached a brand new peak of Number 4, which actually bettered the peak of Warwick's 1963 original.

Dance music continues to rise in the Top 10; Calvin Harris & Dam Smith could reach a new peak with Desire (6) and Chase & Status, Bou & Flowdan’s Baddadan is expected to enter the Top 10 for the first time (8).

Miley Cyrus’s emotional new single Used To Be Young is on track for a debut at Number 9, while Selena Gomez’s Single Soon is predicted to enter at Number 17.

Finally, Burna Boy and Dave’s link-up Cheat On Me could earn a brand new entry at Number 20.

Chart Update 27/08/2023

Sometimes, I wonder if I get any scathing comments from other users whenever I make these reviews. Given I namechecked someone on Friday, I started to wonder if i ever look back on my opinions, and if I ended up looking like an absolute loony. Of course, I don't. And here's the update.

20. Burna Boy ft. Dave - Cheat On Me (NEW) Dud after dud has become the norm for old Burna Boy in recent times, so hopefully his new album that's just dropped can give him some long lost success. This may or may not have something to do with Dave tagging along here, but it works. I think.

19. D.O.D. - So Much In Love (down 1) Does anybody actually still stream this song? Asking for a friend.

18. Charli XCX - Speed Drive (down 3) Barbie fever's subsiding now, which means that Charli XCX can also subside. Just kidding, obviously. Or am I? :/

17. Selena Gomez - Single Soon (NEW) Right then. Selena Gomez. I refuse to comment on her last appearance in the charts, as it may cause to me to have a kidney failure. So let's just focus on this song, which is actually the new Wikipedia definition for 'average'. Not that it's bad or anything, but it doesn't do her any good.

16. Dave & Central Cee - Sprinter (down 4) That's it. Keep slidin' down.

15. Fred Again../Obongjayar - adore u (up 2) Welp. This song has grown on me now. Blame Radio 1 for it's revival in my headcanon. Maybe I just treated it bad.

14. Gunna - fookoomean (down 4) Doesn't mean I'm giving this song any positive coverage. I've already been bored to death by this a thousand times, and it ain't changing now.

13. Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right? (down 2) Cripes. Album out in 12 days now.

12. cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada (up 8) Yöu know, this söng is starting tö get ä little ön my nerves nöw. And nöt just because the ärtist uses diaeresïs.

11. Dua Lipa - Dance The Night (down 10 because of ACR) Well that was an anticlimax. They tweaked the ACR rules not long ago, but it isn't saving last week's No.1. Still, at least you got there, right Dua?

10. Nathan Dawe/Joel Corry/Ella Henderson - 0800 HEAVEN (up 3) No. Just no.

9. Miley Cyrus - Used To Be Young (NEW) Meanwhile, Milly Cyrrous is pretending her Summer Vacation shindig wasn't a thing, and she does this by slapping out a new song and expecting us to not notice. Unfortunately for her, I have to cut this paragraph short because this track is the pits. My mum likes it though.

8. Chase & Status ft. Every MC in Britain (up 6) Up go Chase & Status...

7. Becky Hill/Chase & Status - Disconnect (non-mover) ..and up go Chase & Status.

6. Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Desire (up 2) And up go Calvin & Sam as well, meaning we have to accept that despite this song sounding just like his last hit, Calvin's new formula works. Sadly.

5. Peggy Gou - (It Goes Like) Nanana (up 1) I swear this chart position is gonna be written on her CV for all eternity if it continues like this.

4. Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? (down 2) Well that's Billie finished. For now.

3. Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer (up 2) IS SHE STILL HERE!? Crikey...

2. Olivia Rodrigo - vampire (up 1) Another week, another bottled opportunity. C'mon O-Rod, step it up.

1. Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red (up 3) Ah. Now this, I will admit, wasn't expected. But all the better for it. This will be Doja Cat's FIRST! EVER! NUMBER! ONE! if it continues the way it's going, and this is undeniable proof that no matter how badly you see your supporters, all publicity is good publicity. Maybe this can be the best chart-topper of 2023. Who knows. Who cares. She's top, and that's all that matters.

But enough fangirling. I'm sure Doja would treat my words like a rubbish tip. That's it for tonight, so see you tomorrow for more of the same!!

(P.S. The generic meat-and-two-potatoes cover versions I'm being force-fed at my Haven holiday park right now may be awful, it may be cringe, it may only be appreciated by drunken 43 year-old mothers of four called Janet, Karen or Susan. But some of it is still better than 0800 HEAVEN. No lie.)

your hatred for 0800 heaven is the same hatred i have for baddadan… lol. that’s an awful song too tho so keep roasting it like i’m gonna roast the out of baddadan till it acr’s

OMG..couldn't agree more...as much as i love 0800 HEAVEN, i HATE baddadan: awful song!! have a great day...

oh christ on a stick can we not let baddadan be a hit. there’s so much good drum and bass on monstercat (the only saving grace edm has nowadays) and we get chavs in their council estates blasting this “song” on their 5 pound speaker from asda (and necking a stella for good measure).

i’d rather listen to death to mumble rap than this trash. i’m not joking.

i prefer attention to paint the town red. i’ve always appreciated doja cat as a rapper but she ate on that song. paint the town red is decent but i wish attention became the hit, it’s 🔥

Same here. It felt like a huge letdown when Attention squeaked to 37 a few months back, but it seems that justice is finally being served.

I am a big fan of Paint The Town Red though.

So we got new entries in the Top 20 from Miley, Selena and Burna/Dave.

I'm honestly okay with all three of them being here!

'Prada' nearing the Top 10 is amazing to see. :)

Currently on course to outpeak the original 'Ferrari Horses'! 👀

Somewhere, in a pristine Perranporth caravan, a 16 year-old reviewer is silently crying to himself.

What I'm trying to say is that Prada doesn't come anywhere near the levels of Ferrari Horses, in my opinion. That may have something to do with the fact that I usually despise dance renditions of songs I like.

All it takes is for someone to try to reinvent a song like Meet Me At Our Spot or something, and it causes me to lactate. Very badly.

you may not like dance remixes of pop songs but i despise most dance music in the charts right now full stop, it all sounds the same and it’s at a new low this year because trance is what’s hot right now.

id recommend going to monstercat if you want to find decent dance music. i’ve found some BANGERS from monstercat.

Even if it's far from her best song, Doja getting her first #1 single with 'Paint The Town Red' would be awesome! 😊

Didn't expect Dua to be on ACR this week, but at least she got one week at the summit.
