My Thoughts on the Charts. Congratulations on Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber on getting a #1 with ,"I don't care". Also, thank god that Baby shark has finally left the top 100. I see that "Mr. Brightside", by the killers is re-entered the top 100 at #95. It originally came out in 2004 and it was new at #10. Ed sheeran's song, "Shape of you" which has re-entered at #97 is a good song was #1 from January to April 2017.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber launches in at #1 on the singles chart to become Ed’s sixth & JB’s seventh chart-topper.

- The song enters the chart with a massive 123,825 combined sales (13 million streams & 22,000 downloads). That’s the second biggest weekly combined sales figure of 2019 so far, behind ‘7 Rings’ by Ariana Grande with 126,240 in its opening week.

- It was only less than five years ago that a song of the same title hit the top spot, as ‘I Don’t Care’ by Cheryl reached #1 on the 15 November 2014 dated chart.

- ‘I Don’t Care’ also makes a #1 debut on the radio chart! It’s the second week of consecutive #1 airplay debuts, following ‘Me!’ from last week.

- ‘Old Town Road [Remix]’ by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus goes back to #1 on the national YouTube chart for a fourth non-consecutive week. It increases by 6.7% in weekly views to 3.79 million!

- ED SHEERAN & JUSTIN BIEBER – I DON’T CARE (#1)
Let’s be honest, I think we all expected this to debut at the top today just by name recognition alone, but I’d have thought we’d be getting a ‘Love Yourself: Part 2’… that’s not what this is though. That said, what both Ed & JB have in common is that when they feel vulnerable, that’s when they sound their best! Ed can at least bring more diversity in his vocals & changes his cadence to reflect his mood well, while JB does that to a slightly lesser extent & while the verses might be slightly underwhelming, the catchy hook definitely makes up for it. I also like how the content turns an uncomfortable situation into one that neither artist in question have here because their girlfriends are there. It speaks out to a lot of people that suffer with anxiety at parties, which might be more than you think. I think the Max Martin tropical-pop production gives allows this to reach the level of positivity that this song wants to achieve, but I kind of wished the groove was a little better (although it is ultimately an anti-party anthem). For now though, I’m definitely curious to see where this fits in terms of a later project & how it’ll perform over the summer. As a rating, I’m going for a solid 8/10!

- SKEPTA – GREAZE MODE (#22)
Considering Skepta is one of my favourite grime artists, I’m fairly underwhelmed by this actually. You’d think he’d be able to string rhymes together a little better & make longer lines given his quality, but no, the flow is really choppy & how much auto-tune does Nafe Smallz have to have here?! I mean, I do appreciate the different beat & the more upbeat production here, but then the lyrics make me realise how little I’ll remember this, which is mostly just standard brag rap & getting high. I’m sorry, even if it isn’t among the worst rap in the charts right now, this should’ve been way better! I’m thinking a 5/10.

- JAMES ARTHUR – FALLING LIKE THE STARS (#34)
Look, while James Arthur can surprise me a lot at times, I just can’t get into most of his music like I used to & when we have Lewis Capaldi doing these kind of songs better, I just wasn’t as hyped to hear this as I wanted to be. That said, at least this is still decent. I do find building almost all of your instrumentation on only an acoustic guitar is getting really boring now, but James Arthur has always bought a lot of passion to the table & in this case, he sounds more heavenly than ever. Some of the descriptions of his love for this girl are both sweet & clever, but we’ve just heard him & others do this before so many times. I also expect this to suffer from overplay before long too, but until then, I’m thinking a solid 6/10 for this!

- DABEATFREAKZ X DAPPY X SWARMZ X DENO - MOTOROLA (#35)
You know, when I heard the piano line at the start of the video & that DaBeatFreakz also helped produce ‘Advice’, I thought this might actually be really good… but it’s just average for me unfortunately. Swarmz might have a consistent flow but doesn’t sound interesting at all & while Deno taking charge of the hook is fine, his verses are too whiny for me to really get into, while Dappy is probably delivering the best flow out of three. Beyond that & the incredibly clunky production, you’re just left with content about how these rappers run the city with lots of random references thrown in. In other words, it’s just your standard British hip-hop team-up that’ll probably be forgotten by the middle of the summer. Not bad, but not that good either. 5/10 for me!

- MARK RONSON FT LYKKE LI – LATE NIGHT FEELINGS (#39)
I’m actually really looking forward to the new Mark Ronson album next month; I really liked ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’, there’s a collaboration with Camila Cabello coming soon & for now, we’re treated with this! Lykke Li starts off the song with a gentle & almost despondent, but then we get a significant burst in both the vocals & production in the chorus, where Mark Ronson brings a discotheque feel to the collaboration. It’s also interesting to see a song where the content seems really honest (holding yourself back from a former lover & feeling guilty about falling for the wrong people) while also maintaining some groove & a bounce of the main production line. The dynamics might not be big enough to make this among Mark Ronson’s best, but it’s still good regardless. Solid 7/10 for me!

- On the albums chart, ‘Hurts 2B Human’ by P!NK spends a third consecutive week at #1, now more weeks than all of her other #1s combined! It was the album with the most physical sales & digital downloads over the past seven days.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘When We All Fall Asleep. Where Do We Go?’ by Billie EIlish (3-2, most streamed album of the week), ‘The Greatest Showman’ [Soundtrack] (5-3), ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ [Soundtrack] by Queen (7-4) & ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (9-5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Unsainted’ by Slipknot, ‘Nightmare’ by Halsey, ‘Doin’ Time’ by Lana Del Rey, ‘Blame It On Your Love’ by Charli XCX ft Lizzo, ‘3 Nights’ by Dominic Fike, 'Truth Hurts' by Lizzo, 'Higher' by DJ Khaled ft Nipsey Hussle & John Legend, a track or two by Lewis Capaldi, one or two Eurovision entries & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

I'm still with streams over weight. I mean, 13 million streams give them the same money as 26k sales and yet are accounted as more than 100k sales...

Wow, what makes you put slipknot in there as a possible top 40 next week Piran? Personally I'm more excited about the new biffy clyro track but didnt even know slipknot had a new track out!

Nice review as always. For me I'm kinda hooked on the new entries except "Motorola" really hope "Truth Hurts" and "3 nights" eventually make it to the top 40 though.

Hey Piran! Of course I love seeing 'I Don't Care' go to #1, but it's not exactly surprising. What I did find quite surprising, like you, is that it didn't actually manage the biggest debut of 2019 so far. That said, its 21,602 actual sales is by far the highest of any #1 track this year (the previous best was '7 rings' with 15,108 in its first week), and it might even be the highest weekly sales figure of any track this year. Its 102,223 streaming sales is also the 2nd highest of the year, with only '7 rings' managing 111,132. I guess it just goes to show that the chart isn't quite as predictable as we think, as even when 2 of the Top 5 biggest artists of the 2010s join forces they can't quite manage the biggest debut of the year. I think '7 rings' massive YouTube figures definitely helped it a lot, and if 'I Don't Care's music video had been released with the song it probably would've edged '7 rings' down to 2nd.
For the debuts, I don't think it'll be any surprise that 'I Don't Care' is my favourite. It's not even my favourite Ed or Bieber track, nor would it make my Top 50 songs of all time (where Ed has 8 entries, 5 from 'x'), but I'd still give it a light-solid 9/10 for now, with the potential to climb slightly. 'Greaze Mode' is where we differ the most, as I'd probably give it a strong 7/10 - light 8/10, while I'd give 'Falling like the Stars' a light 7/10. 'Motorola' was pretty decent for me but nothing special, probably a strong 6/10, and 'Late Night Feelings' would be a solid 6/10. I had no idea Mark was doing a collaboration with Camila though - do you know when that'll be released? Because I am already extremely excited for it! It'll be the first track with her as the only vocalist since her debut album, iirc.
Next week I think it's pretty safe to say that 'I Don't Care' will be #1 again, especially with its music video released on Friday which has already racked up over 23m views. I think 'I Don't Care' will probably spend at least 4 weeks at #1, even with the ridiculously strong competition at the moment, unless something else massive is released. I mean, 'Someone You Loved' at #4 is still getting over 60k sales, a higher amount than its first week at #1! And 'Vossi Bop' & 'Old Town Road' are both pushing 80k sales, an amount that would usually guarantee a #1!
Lewis Capaldi will probably have 3 Top 10s next week with 'Someone You Loved', 'Hold Me While You Wait' and then either 'One', 'Grace' or 'Bruises', and I think his debut album has the potential to be the fastest selling of 2019 so far, and potentially even the fastest selling debut of the 2010s! One Direction currently hold that title with 'Up All Night', which got 139,000 in its first week, but Capaldi is dominating streaming and digital sales services right now, and he's also the type of artist to get massive physical sales. At the very least I think it should beat '+', which got 102,000, and if he can beat 'Human's 117,000 he'll have the biggest debut of the 2010s for a male solo artist.
Tyler, The Creator will probably have 3 Top 40 entries next week and a #2 album with 'IGOR', and DJ Khaled's 'Father Of Asahd' will probably make the Top 5 as well, though it doesn't look too likely to get any Top 40 tracks. All in all it'll probably be a huge week for debuts, but just because of album tracks rather than actual single releases, since the highest debut for an actual single on Spotify is 'Inglorious' by slowthai ft. Skepta, which is at #60.

Thanks David! :)
'Motorola' certainly isn't among the worst rap songs in the charts right now, but I don't see myself coming back to it unfortunately.
'Truth Hurts' is decent, but I think 'Juice' is the far superior Lizzo song. '3 Nights' is amazing though & I'd love to see this in the Top 40 soon!

avatar

Piran

0

They seemed to have decent sales at the start of the week, but I'm not sure if streaming is going to be enough.

avatar

Piran

0

If anything, I guess that shows how much streaming is influencing our charts since the 150:1 formula was introduced, so either the OCC should alter the sales numbers they report or consider changing the chart formula.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

0

I dont think slipknot or buffy clyro will be too fussed about their chart positions anyway, they both have massive followings and will always have huge concerts which will generate enough income for them to consistently make new music

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I honestly think having successful tours & albums is far more important than getting a hit song anyway.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Gameskiller! :)
Yeah, even if 'I Don't Care' didn't get the strongest streaming week of 2019 this time, it could still have the chance to do in the future (especially considering the official video came out on Friday & it should be heading for a #1 debut on that chart too).
I agree with your prediction on 'I Don't Care', given how stable it is across the board.
I think 'One' probably has the edge for Lewis Capaldi right now, but I didn't realise how well Tyler The Creator was doing in the UK this week. Maybe DJ Khaled could chart a song or two from his new album as well given the names that are on it. I wonder if any Eurovision songs will make the Top 40 too? 'Spirit In The Sky', 'Arcade' & 'Bigger Than Us' all have a chance currently, with the former being the most likely. However, if none made it last year, I don't think any will manage it this year either.
The Mark Ronson & Camila Cabello collaboration is called 'Find U Again' & it's just an album track for his upcoming album for now, which is due for release on the 21st of June.
