BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
by QUEEN
Formed in 1970, British rock band Queen were originally comprised of vocalist Freddie Mercury (born Frederick Bulsara), bassist John Deacon, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. First released on October 31, 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody was the quartet’s fourth single and first Number 1 escalating from its entry at Number 47 to Number 1 in the space of four weeks, and spent nine weeks at the top giving them the UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 in the process.
At almost six minutes, it was the longest Christmas Number 1 and was decidedly un-festive with its lyric concerning killing a man as well as a lack of a chorus. Bohemian Rhapsody also has the unique accolade of being Christmas Number 1 twice, when it was reissued as a double A-side with These Are The Days Of Our Lives in 1991 following the death of Freddie Mercury. The biggest-selling single of the decade, it currently stands tall with 2.62 million sales overall.
