Billie challenges Dave & Central Cee as Travis Scott and Sinead O'Connor impact Singles Chart

A trifecta of big players move up the chart this week.
Billie Eilish Sinead O'Connor Travis Scott

Billie Eilish’s Barbie anthem What Was I Made For? benefits from a second week of Barbiemania as it’s currently just 1,500 chart units away from replacing Dave & Central Cee’s Sprinter at Number 1.

Following the release of his much-hyped fourth studio album Utopia, three tracks from Travis Scott could flood the Top 10; Meltdown (6) which features uncredited vocals from Drake, Hyaena (7), and Fein (9) which features uncredited vocals from Playboi Carti.

After the sad news of Sinead O’Connor’s death, the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter’s 1990 Number 1 single, Nothing Compares 2 U, is predicted to re-enter the Top 40 at Number 12.

Experimental producer Aphex Twin could score his highest-ever peak in the UK chart with Blackbox Life Recorder 21F (14); potentially marking his first Singles Chart entry since 1999.

Calvin Harris & Sam Smith’s latest collaboration Desire eyes a Number 15 debut. It would mark Calvin’s 41st Top 40 single and Sam Smith’s 22nd.

Charli XCX’s Speed Drive could zoom into a new peak of Number 18.

i saw that snl episode live that night when sinead ripped up the picture of the pope.  & people today have got to understand, she chose to do something shocking on live tv with NO explanation to the audience.  THAT'S why she got forever banned on snl.  even i was wondering 'why is she holding a picture of the pope for?'  & then after she rips up the pic and says 'fight the real enemy'....that was it.  she didn't explain why she did that until about a wk later.  THAT'S what shocked us here in the states.

so i'm sorry she passed and had mental issues BUT we have a saying here in america: you make your bed, you have to lie in it.  i still agree with her being banned on snl & i 100% support the americans who booed her everywhere she went.  again, she had PLENTY of time @ the moment to explain why she did that, but didn't.

Chart Update 30/07/2023

After the chaotic reigns on play last week in the chart, I was half expecting this post to just be completely forgotten about, given Radio 1 are too busy doing their Dance Weekend in Ibiza to care. But the OCC do, fortunately, so let's get this over with.

20. Jorja Smith - Little Things (7.7/10) Jorja had a good run, but now it seems the crucial lack of streams seems to have hit her hard. Still, great song, hopefully great album. If it ever comes out of course.

19. J Hus ft. Drake - Who Told You (8/10) Fraud. How do you fall that far. He's not even on ACR and he's crashed 10 places. Still, nice Mercury nomination you got there.

18. Charli XCX - Speed Drive (6.6/10) In other news, The Barbie will NOT. GO. AWAY. I can't decide whether that's a good thing or bad thing, but here's Charli XCX anyway. This piece of information is as brief as the song.

17. Becky Hill/Chase & Status - Disconnect (7/10) 'Ver Status' put out a new song that impacted the Spotify chart called Baddadan, but given it isn't in the Top 20, I just wanted to inform you 'bout that, K?

16. Gunna - fookoomean (4.5/10) Down he goes. Just like my bank balance.

15. Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Desire (6.6/10) (NEW) And now for Miracle 2.0, as Calvin tries similar tricks with this followup. Similar beats, similar sounds, similar collaborators. Even the lyrics are a little copy and paste. Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

14. Aphex Twin -Blackbox Life Recorder 21f(N/A) (NEW) I have no words. I actually don't. How has this happened. I know this is due to physical products, and I know this won't be in the Top 100 next week. But just, WOW. Hats off to Richard D. James for doing this well. Haven't listened to it, obviously.

13. Hannah Lairo & RoRo - Good Love (4.8/10) And now, back to the boring kind of dance music that usually clogs up this section of the chart. Great.

12. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (5.6/10) Oversaturation on radio means this rating is a little damaged, but yeah. This lass passed, so now her chart class she will now outclass. That was not meant to rhyme.

11. Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer (7/10) Had a good run, eh TayTay? Out of the Top 10 she goes, I guess (for now, anyway).

10. Nathan Dawe/Joel Corry/Ella Henderson - 0800 HEAVEN (3/10) If only this song could leave the Top 10, though.

9. Travis Scott - FE!N - (4.7/10) UTOPIA happened. Don't ask questions, alright?

8. Peggy Gou - (It Goes Like) Nanana - In the middle of this Travis Scott sandwich comes Peggy Gou, who may not be our hope and saviour of the dance world after all. I mean, yeah, she's still got the highest charting dance rave hit, but still.

7. Travis Scott - HYAENA - (7.3/10) On the contrary, however, this Travis Scott is surprisingly good. Maybe because I can't understand what's happening in it, but who knows. Maybe he learnt something from Aphex Twin.

6. Travis Scott - MELTDOWN - (5.2/10) This rap breakdown, however, is less than inspired.

5. Olivia Rodrigo - vampire (7.8/10) Welp, O-Rod had a good run. Looks like time has run out for our favourite American teenage superstar.

4. Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice - Barbie World (5.1/10) I refuse to put Aqua as part of this artists credit. The song is so short they barely contribute anyway.

3. Dua Lipa - Dance The Night (6.4/10) Dua has her biggest hit since the Future Nostalgia days, and I for one couldn't care less. Probably because it still isn't the biggest Barbie single.

2. Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? (5.7/10) And in other news, Billie E. has her biggest track since Therefore I Am. Which is great. For her. But unfortunately, I just don't see the hype.

1. Dave & Central Cee - Sprinter (5/10) Then again, I'd put Billie at the top in a heartbeat if it meant knocking off this track. GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE. Preferably one of the girls. Given they make up the rest of the top 5, that is up to your imagination.

But yeah. That's that. Caw.

(P.S. That is goodbye in Maltese, if you're wondering. Also, the EP which contains 'that track' also has such big tunes as Zin2 Test5, and In a Room7 F760. Also a Pallax Mix of Blackbox Recorder. I'm sure that doesn't matter to you, though.)

Pleasantly surprised to see Aphex Twin here! 😮

This would become his first charting entry this century.

Good to see 'Nothing Compares 2 U' surge into the Top 20, even if the circumstances behind it doing so are very sad! 😔

hey mate, it was a big hit here in the states.  i wrote a post explaining why americans were so shocked by what she did.  i myself saw that snl episode where she ripped up the pic of the pope.  i'm sorry she passed, but i'm not sorry she got banned from snl.  she just left us all hanging for about a wk as to why she did that.

I sadly don't see it happening, but I'd absolutely love to see Billie take the #1 by Friday! ❤️
