Mariah Carey and Wham are leading the race for Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart

Plus Jess Glynne and Justin Bieber could be flying into the Top 5 this Friday.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is leading the charge on today’s Official Chart: First Look.

The festive hit is currently just 1,300 chart sales ahead of Wham’s Last Christmas which rises one place to Number 2 after 48 hours. If Mariah can hold on to her current position it'll be the first time the song's 26-year history that it scoops the Official UK Number 1.

Meanwhile, Jess Glynne’s Amazon Originals cover of Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas flies up 25 places to Number 3 on the First Look - and if it stays on track, this will be Jess’s 13th UK Top 10 song.

Another Amazon Original, Justin Bieber’s take on Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree is up 16 places to Number 5, set to become his 23rd Top 10 hit.

The influx of festive songs into the Top 10 this week means current Number 1 Ariana Grande’s Positions drops to Number 7 – but with five days of this week’s chart race left there’s still time for the song to rise back to the top.

Other songs rising into the Top 20 on this week’s First Look are: Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens (6), Step Into Christmas – Elton John (8), Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band Aid (9), I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard (12), Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea (13), Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade (17), and One More Sleep – Leona Lewis (18).

The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled exclusively on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published from 5.45pm.

An all Christmas Top 5?

A first for the UK chart?

The UK CHRISTMAS #1 is news around the world. With all the changes in the last decade, streaming or buying, etc., it's high time some new rules are put into place. Without that, the contest risks becoming a joke, with no real meaning behind who really wins. It's close already to being a farce, bring some real meaning to the Christmas #1 title.

For me "Last Christmas" its better than "All I want for Christmas its you". But what I really want to be N1 its "One more sleep" by Leona Lewis. Thats the new Christmas hit.

This is so ridiculous!
All shops now use streaming to play songs during this season too and all those plays count for chart.
Before as they used CDs they were not "equivalent" buying the same song twice a week for overplaying them. Most don't even choose the songs and use ready made Christmas playlist where those 2 TOP songs are the most added. Almost all the TOP 10 it's just old Christmas songs... at least the sales chart is a bit different.

I can't see BRENDA LEE inside the Top 20?

Yes please!! Mariah so deserves her 3rd UK number 1 single!! Furthermore she has been waiting 26 years for that number 1 single!! PLEASE let Mariah be our new number 1 single this Friday!!

Lazy cover versions everywhere by lazy b*stards cashing in on Christmas....easy money for the people who least need it. Once upon a time people used to write new songs for Christmas.

If Mariah Carey stays at No.2 then wouldn't that be better? She would have the accolade of having the longest No.2 in U.K. chart history (8 weeks) without ever reaching the top spot! Better than just becoming another belated No.1? (see also: Steve Miller Band, PJ & Duncan AKA, David Bowie and many more...)

Anyone but bieber for the UK Xmas #1.
At least that ladbaby hasnt done an Oasis styled 'sausage-roll with it' one week wonder this year.
Personally Mariah or Wham! is more deserved for a festive #1 than the over-rated filth of the Pogues.
But, it's still 3 weeks away, anything can happen.

this year has been a disaster all around, with corona and everything, so this will hopefully be amazing news in an otherwise tragic year for once. i’ll fork my streams and a few pennies to help the cause...

This will most likely be the top 5 on Friday

1. All I want for Christmas is you
2. Last Christmas
3. Fairytale of New York
4. Positions
5. This Christmas

Piran

Honestly, looking at how close the Spotify numbers were today, I wouldn’t even rule out ‘Last Christmas’ for #1 on Friday just yet! :O

avatar

Shadowcat222

5

Maybe Mariah wont be #1 because of Last christmas🤣

avatar

Piran

2

Either one of them going to #1 would be amazing for me, but Mariah’s would just feel that bit more magical for me personally. :)

Shadowcat222

1

Yes me too😜

Piran

It’s funny how none of the three big Christmas classics (Mariah, Wham! & The Pogues) have never hit #1 in the charts, but they’re always the three festive throwbacks that return to the charts first, haha. :)

JB

Jack Brooks

'Last Christmas' by Wham is the biggest selling song not to reach #1 in the UK due to it being released at the same time as the original Band Aid single, so that would be a very long standing record broken if it did make it to the top.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Would love to agree but this Christmas by Jess Glynne is the only track that isn't on long term acr, although positions is too thats not a Xmas song. So hopefully that isn't going to take over soon

avatar

Piran

Yeah, as soon as Mariah takes the #1 on Friday (it’s looking increasingly likely now), then I’ll be backing Wham! until they can finally get to the top of the charts, haha. :)

JB

Jack Brooks

I'd be interested to find out what would become the biggest selling non-Number 1 if they were to achieve it. Something in the back of my mind says it would be 'Wonderwall' by Oasis but i'm not 100% on that.

avatar

Piran

2

You were very close actually! :O

So ‘Wonderwall’ is the 38th best-selling song of all-time according to OCC, but there is actually song that didn't reach #1 above it in the list (not counting ‘Last Christmas’).

It’s not what you’d expect either! ;)

This is too much ridiculous as these classic streams are inflated by shops playing the Christmas paylists and genearted millions of streams for the songs (while before would play them the same way but on CD).

JB

Jack Brooks

Wow thanks for that Piran! I never would have expected it to be 'Moves Like Jagger' in a million years. Tbh even if you'd said it was something from 2011 I probably wouldn't have guessed it, it's a good song but I had no idea it was so successful.

Interestingly now i've looked into it, it seems that song was kept off the top spot by a multitude of different songs which is even more unusual, unlike 'Last Christmas' and 'Wonderwall' which were the result of one other massive hit been released in the same week (Band Aid & Robson & Jerome).

avatar

Velvet Android

1

I wouldn't have expected that either!

But yes, it's arguably the most 'unlucky' song in chart history. First up it matched the seven-week record of All 4 One's I Swear for the longest spell at No.2 by any single never to reach Number 1 – but unlike I Swear (held off for all seven weeks by Wet Wet Wet's Love Is All Around) and Right Said Fred's I'm Too (six weeks behind Bryan Adams' (Everything I Do) I Do It For You) it didn't get held up by one massive chart-topper but instead somehow came in runner-up to six different No.1s consecutively.

What made it feel more galling at the time, and in retrospect frankly, is how with the exceptions of One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful (week 3) and Rihanna/Calvin Harris's We Found Love (weeks 6 & 7, the only one to actually hold on at the top), none of the ones that actually held top spot for a cup of coffee during that run had any widespread appeal or lasting impact whatsoever.
And OK, we can perhaps give What Makes You Beautiful a pass in hindsight, but at the time an anonymous new boyband barging straight in at Number One with their debut single only seemed to add to the endless parade of five straight 'unworthy' recipients of the top spot ahead of Moves Like Jagger, before We Found Love finally came in with a bit of 'credibility' at least.

(Edit: I've just twigged that All I Want For Christmas Is You has also tied the record as it's now on its 7th week at No.2 – albeit from five separate runs in five different years! Last Christmas, incidentally, has 6 and counting...)

avatar

Piran

I think the First Look in two weeks’ time will be an entire Top 20 of Christmas songs, haha. :)

avatar

Doc Pops

1

Be careful what u wish for... ;o)

avatar

Piran

Hey, the more Christmas songs, the better, at least for me! ;)

NN

And we are luckly if it's just TOP 20 and not entire TOP 40.
Thank God for the Single Sales Chart! Something real to look at instead this official fake chart due to free streamings where playlists say what's hot and what's not.

avatar

Piran

1

I personally disagree.

The sales chart has become outdated now... almost everyone streams music nowadays (as opposed to buying it) & a lot of that is through choice, so I feel that the right amount of emphasis is being put on it!

It’s ACR & the three songs rule that’s ruining the charts at the moment though. :/

i mean there was payola from amazon last year with river. that song was actually good, but i hope they don’t use similar payola to those two songs, especially when they’re both mediocre.

Okay, I’m not getting too excited just yet, as a lot can change in five days, but the fact that the highest non-festive song is down to #7 makes me very hopeful that Mariah will finally take it on Friday. :)

I would definitely have preferred her to get the number 1 when the charts were a real thing rather than just streaming through free apps. It's a great song that deserved to be number 1 on sales!

avatar

Piran

Yeah, but #1 through streaming is better than no #1 at all, I guess. :)
