Lady Gaga celebrates her fourth Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart today as her latest collection Chromatica debuts at the top with impressive opening-week numbers.

Gaga’s sixth record lands at the summit with 53,000 chart sales – the biggest opening week for an album on the Official Chart in 2020 so far. It’s also the strongest comeback for the singer in some time, Chromatica smashes the first week tallies of her 2014 Tony Bennett duets album Cheek To Cheek, 2016’s Joanne and the cast recording of A Star Is Born from 2018.

Chromatica outperformed the rest of this week’s Top 10 combined, finishing as the week’s best performing album across physical, streaming and downloads. It’s also the fastest-selling vinyl record of the year to date, with 8,500 copies of the record snapped up on wax this week.

Gaga also claims the biggest opening week for a female artist album since Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next in February 2019.

Three songs from Chromatica finish inside this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 40: Rain On Me ft. Ariana Grande at 2, Sour Candy with Blackpink at 17 and Alice at 29.

Gaga's previous Number 1 studio albums are The Fame/Fame Monster (2009), Born This Way (2011), Artpop (2013). The soundtrack for A Star Is Born, which is credited as a cast recording, was also a Number 1 in 2018. View Lady Gaga's Official Chart history so far here.

Meanwhile, Youtuber-turned-rapper KSI holds at Number 2 with his debut album Dissimulation, and Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent completes the Top 3.

Two more new releases land in this week’s Top 10: Golden Hour by Norwegian producer Kygo opens at 6, marking his second Top 10 album, and Manchester rapper Aitch is new at 7 with his Polaris EP.

Further down, the debut album from Scottish indie group Vistas, Everything Changes In The End, enters at 21, and Canadian rock band Rush are new at 22 with the 40th anniversary edition of their 1980 album Permanent Waves.

Christine and the Queen’s La Vita Nuova EP makes its Top 40 debut at 37 following its physical release, and UK jazz collective Dutty Moonshine Big Band enter at 40 with City Of Sin.

"Gaga also claims the biggest opening week for a female artist album since Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next in February 2019." I don't get it. Lover sold 53K too..

J

Jstar

2

Maybe it sold like 100 copies or more or something lol. They don't give the exact numbers. They just round them off.

But in twitter "uk chart oficial" said chromatica sold 52.900.

J

Then maybe Lover might have sold like 52,800 or something. They just round up or down.

Chromatica - 52,907
Lover - 53,015

OCC is wrong

J

Well that is their mistake then, I doubt they will edit their article even though they should.

OCC doesn't even fix their own chart! (see Mariah incident)

J

I only recently started following the U.K charts so I don't know about that Mariah incident, what happened?

avatar

Rector

Mariah missed the #1 last Christmas because the OCC incorrectly gave Mariah's YouTube sales to a random tribute act (new at #13) while it itself fell 5-19. See the Video Streaming Chart of that day: https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/video-streaming-chart/20191227/7508/
If the data was added correctly, Mariah would be #1, not Ellie. But of course the OCC didn't bother fixing it. Really puts the 'official' in OCC...

(Watch this comment get deleted because whenever I post about it, it gets removed. Scandalous!!)

I thought more the tracks would chart. They have all garnered millions of streams. I wonder does Lady Gaga decide which tracks should appear on charts? Or are albums only limited to 3 tracks on the charts? Anyone know? I'm intrigued!

Only three songs per artist is allowed to chart!

wow! I never know that! I was sure Billie Eilish had more tracks from WWAFAWDWG on the UK chart...

Glad to see it doing so well! What I've heard so far is really good.

Also nice to see Kygo, really though it would've debuted a lot lower, but glad that isn't the case.

So happy for LADY GAGA..Shame her single dropped to number 2 and she would have had a number single and album!! and so pleased to see KYGO at number 6!!

Jstar, come through, good news for you that’ll make your day... ;D

This is a decent album, so it was deserving of the #1, but I personally wanted Kygo to get there. Still, congrats to Gaga! :)

Thanks man, Kygo still got a top 10 debut which is great. Now I am just waiting for the billboard 200, it is predicted to debut with around 275k which would be awesome.

Hi Coolocelot101..How are you? So happy with Lady Gaga and her number 1 album? Did expect Kygo to get into the Top 5...just hope his album won't drop out the album chart next week?!! Have a great week end..BTW, do you like Megan the stallion? She made it like DOJA CAT to the top of the Billboard hot 100 but only remained there for a single week: shame really, great tune!!

Hi Thierry! Life’s good, as the weekend has come. I’m happy enough with Lady Gaga getting the #1 album, but I enjoyed Born This Way and her A Star Is Born soundtrack a little more.

Regarding Megan Thee Stallion, I really like her! Savage has been on repeat for days, she and Doja Cat are awesome breakout acts. I witnessed her song only reaching #1 for a week, but it looks like she could reclaim. Let’s hope so! :)

What awesome news to here. So glad Gaga was able to get another number 1 album in the U.K. I hope everyone is well today.

Oh wow, this is her biggest opening week since 'Artpop' seven years ago then?!

I'm very glad about that though! The whole album is a lot of fun & gives me really nostalgic vibes for the dance-pop sound that made her so big in the first place.

It's also interesting to hear BLACKPINK & Elton John on the same album too, haha! Who would've expected that? See, 'Chromatica' is full of surprises! :D

J

Jstar

Hey Piran you know I am happy about it. It is also the biggest debut so far this year which is awesome considering we are in June.

Hey Jstar! :)

Yeah, I'm just amazed that it outperformed the rest of the Top 10 combined, when you've got some other massive global artists up there like Dua Lipa, Lewis Capaldi, KSI & Kygo, to name just a few.

J

Jstar

Like I said A star is Born really was great for her career, it put her back in the mainstream spotlight to a lot of people. Also the fact that she returned to dance which was her initial sound also helps.

Hi Piran..long time no speak...how are you? BTW i don't know if you are still listening to KEIINO ...but their 1st album came out last week: OKTA..amazzzzzzzzing...i love pop/ dance music at its best and their album doesn't disappoint!! love it, love it..

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I agree! :)

See, this is why I wish Taylor would go back to a full country-pop album like 'Fearless'! A lot of fans love it when a big artist sticks to the original sound that brought them into the mainstream in the first place.

avatar

Piran

2

Hey Thierry! How you been? It has indeed been a while.

I'm doing okay thanks! Obviously really bored at the moment, but staying safe, which is the most important right now. :)

I've just been listening to all the Eurovision songs for 2020 over the past month really (so hyped that 'Think About Things' is in our Top 40 now!), so not got to KEIINO's debut album yet, but I can't wait to check it out!

J

Jstar

I believe Taylor will one day return to a more country style album again. I don't think it will be full country but country-pop as you mentioned.

I look forward to talking on the singles chart soon, I guess the albums chart is quiet this week since we knew Gaga would be number 1 since last Friday here haha.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, she took a step closer in going back to that sound on 'Lover' to be fair, although it was primarily a pop record.

Haha, true, well I can confirm that 'Rockstar' has returned to #1 on our singles chart for a third non-consecutive week, but Lady Gaga does have three songs inside the Top 40 ('Rain On Me' at #2, 'Sour Candy' at #17 & 'Alice' at #29!). :)

This is kind of the time I wish album bombs were allowed lol, there probably could be a few more Gaga songs this week. But I understand that they want a variety of artists to chart. Especially since that time Ed basically took over the whole chart haha.

Hey Jstar!!! I am finishing up my Chromatica review and I kept thinking "Sunday" all yesterday....almost forgot Queen Gaga's album debuts first in the UK...haha. Awesome sales!!!! The combined Top 10? :)

J

Jstar

1

Hey Marco, great to see you. Yep the combined top 10. Also 3 songs are in the top 30 this week in the U.K. Rain on Me, Sour Candy and Alice.

Marcothedonjuan

Awesome!!! Love all of those. :)

J

Jstar

Unfortunately more couldn't chart because they have a rule of 3 per album i believe. But i am still happy nonetheless. Also Shallow held on at 100 for a 72nd week lol.

avatar

Marcothedonjuan

I wasn't aware of that rule thanks! Shallow still charting proves this era is a RETURN, not a comeback. :)

J

Jstar

Yep, she is just continuing her success from A Star is Born here.
