Rapper Childish Gambino's latest single This is America nabs the Number 1 spot on this week's Official Trending Chart – the Top 20 songs making the biggest impact in the UK this week.

Since the video debuted over a week ago, the track has been causing controversy and igniting discussions worldwide for its scathing takedown of the political situation in America. Serving as the lead single for what is thought to be actor and musician's Donald Glover's last album performing as Childish Gambino, This is America has broken the Top 10 in today's latest singles chart sales flash, currently sitting at Number 6.

Elsewhere in the Official Trending Chart, Shawn Mendes enjoys a surge with In  My Blood, which is expected to give the Canadian his fourth Top 10 this Friday, currently at 7, and Arctic Monkeys take up multiple slots thanks to the release of sixth album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino.

New releases already making waves include Selena Gomez's Back To You, Years & Years' If You're Over Me and Bastille's Quarter Past Midnight, and the Eurovision effect sees three tracks from the infamous song contest make our clutch of trending hits. UK entrant Surie heads them up with Storm, followed by Israel's winner Toy, from Netta, and second-place Cyprus, with the fan favourite Fuego, from Eleni Foureira.

About the Official Trending Chart

The Official Trending Chart is a brand new chart launched for 2016 to highlight the hottest new tracks beginning to make an impact in the UK every week.

The Top 20 rundown, published on OfficialCharts.com every Tuesday, based on the first four days’ sales of each chart week, is designed to highlight emerging hits as they begin to scale the Official Charts and build buzz.

The Official Trending Chart ranks titles which are showing week-on-week chart growth, and is the only “new music” chart to reflect audio track sales and streams comprehensively across all services.

Devised by the Official Charts Company in close consultation with labels, retailers and media, the chart since launch has already highlighted emerging hits such as Number 1 singles Mike Posner’s I Took A Pill In Ibiza and Drake's One Dance.

The chart is designed to help highlight hit singles in their early stages of their growth, in the light of the shift in release strategies of record labels over the past six months. Under “On Air On Sale”, labels have started to release new music for consumers to buy or stream on the same day as those tracks are released to media (including radio stations and TV).
