Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home dominated Official Film Chart in 2022

Two of the biggest blockbusters of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home, dominated the Official Film Chart last year. 

Figures released today by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) and the Official Charts Company (OCC) show Top Gun: Maverick (starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Val Kilmer) flying high as the biggest selling home entertainment title in 2022, with over 1.2 million sales across DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital EST (electronic sell-through).

Meanwhile, Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home (with Tom Holland, Zendaya and Andrew Garfield & Tobey Maguire in much-hyped surprise roles) swings in to second place with over 900,000 sales across DVD, Blu-ray, and EST, plus a rental performance of over 450k on VOD.

In what is great news for Tom Cruise, who returned to the Top Gun franchise after more than 30 years, the 1986 original film was the UK's most rented title with nearly half a million digital transactions, proving that Tom is still the King of the Blockbuster.

Other big successes of the year include No Time To Die, the last film to feature Daniel Craig as James Bond, Denis Villeneuve's ambitious adaption of Frank Herbert's influential sci-fi opus Dune starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and Matt Reeve's neo-noir reboot of The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight and Zoe Kravitz in an impassioned turn as Catwoman. 

BASE research shows that UK consumers had nearly 50 million subscriptions in 2022, with a 6.4% growth from 2021. The top-rated children's film of 2022 was Disney's Encanto, released on Disney+ at the tail-end of 2021 which birthed one of the biggest chart-toppers of 2022 in the UK in the form of We Don't Talk About Bruno. 

The biggest TV show release of the year was HBO's much-hyped Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, an ambitious 10-parter that included star-making turns from Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke and Milly Alcock, as well as established heavy-hitters Matt Smith and Paddy Considine.
