Adele’s 21 looks set to hold onto Number 1 for first birthday

Adele’s 21 on course for 21st non-consecutive week at Number 1

Adele’s 21, which returned to the top of the Official Albums Charts on Sunday, looks set to hold onto its Number 1 position as the Tottenham-born singer’s second album celebrates its first birthday this week, the Official Charts Company can reveal.

21, which was released on January 24, 2011, debuted at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart after selling over 208,000 during its first week on sale. It then proceeded to set up camp at the top chart for 11 straight weeks, and by October had become the biggest selling album of the 21st Century after overtaking Amy Winehouse’s 2006 album, Back To Black http://bit.ly/tv2mKL . To date, 21 has sold over 3,85 million copies in the UK alone. If it manages to hold onto the top spot this Sunday, it will mark 21’s 21st non-consecutive weeks at Number 1.

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto climbs one place to Number 2 on today’s Official Update, while Ed Sheeran’s + (3), Bruno MarsDoo-wops And Hooligans (4) and The VaccinesWhat Did You Expect From The Vaccines? complete the Top 5.

US crooner Chris Isaak’s collection of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis covers, Beyond The Sun, is this week’s highest new entry at Number 6, while Virginian metallers Lamb Of God’s seventh album, Resolution, is new in at Number 7.
Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit‘s second album, The Lion’s Roar, is new in at 27, closely followed by Italian goth-metallers Lacuna Coil’s sixth album, Dark Adrenaline, at 28. Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s Area 52 completes this week’s Official Update‘s Top 40 new entries at 40.

In the midst of media flurry surrounding a rumoured divorce from supermodel Heidi Klum, this week’s highest climber is British singer Seal‘s Soul 2, up 52 places to Number 16.
