Chart Review 01/03/24

must refrain from making a March pun, must refrain from making a March pun, must-

AAAAGGHH!! Sorry, got caught in a moment there. What was I doin'? Oh yeah, the chart.

Bienvenue, guten tag, ciao, and all the other greetings, because I'm here to inform you about the goings on in the UK music industry. Given how limp and boring our Eurovision entry is, you could begrudge my urge to moan about the state of what X-Press 2 used to call 'MUZIKIZUM', but I'm not that sadistic. Ok, sometimes I am, but that doesn't stop your reading these, does it?

Admit it, my style of writing is the only reason you look at these.

In more important news, however, is the sight of Beyoncé still wrestling everybody to the floor with her country-filled extravaganza, as TEXAS HOLD 'EM nicks a second week at the summit amongst the utter drivel below it. Whilst some people may get offended at the sight of a black woman going full Chris Stapleton, those complainers would absolutely prefer her over the double deadly dull as dishwater SLOP of Teddy Swims and Benson Boone. ACR can't come soon enough for those 'tracks'.

Oh, and Rod Stewart and Jools Holland are top of the albums. Just wanted to get that outta the way as soon as possible, because no one with any dignity bought it.

6 new songs make their grand entrances today (along with re-appearances for Becky Hill, because the BRITs that happen tomorrow are at fault, and Justin Timberlake, because Graham Norton won't get with the times), led in predictable fashion by the lady with the most difficult to pronounce name in pop. SZA (shuushshsusa. shsh. sheesh. zar? Just kidding, it's pronounced scissor) had a pretty good 2023 overall, her album SOS selling bucketloads off the back of songs like Snooze and Kill Bill, and clearly she's in no mood to stop there. From the upcoming deluxe edition of that album comes Saturn, a song that feels like a mesh of all her previous smash hits mashed into one. Obviously, her name factor is a huge deal nowadays and a Top 20 chart entry was a given from the start. The only real test will be if Saturn can hold out as long those two albatrosses. 15 may be this song's peak for now, but at least it's trying. And speaking of trying...

4 years ago, Central Cee had his first Top 40 appearance with Loading. 23 Top 40 hits and a Number 1 album later, he finally mixes it up a little. Sure, 2022s LET GO had him attempt to execute Passenger's Let Her Go through the use of, oh the scandal, a chorus, but even CC seems to have realised that you gotta switch it up every now and then. This is where new hit I Will comes into play, and it duly becomes his 24th hit at No.18. It's also the first time Central Cee tries to get his head around this new-fangled afrobeat epidemic that's been sweeping the charts for the last few years. Bit weird that one of drill's leading lights is betraying his clan with this, but if it gets new fans on board, then that's fine. I personally like this song. A lot. Maybe it's 'cos I usually expect some 2 minute exposé on cars and jewellery from him, but I don't know, this is great. Shut up.

I should probably mention by now that ACR is finally doing it's job by ejecting some exhaustingly long runners in the chart lore this week, as greedy and Prada FINALLY succumb to the inevitable and drop at least 20 places apiece this week. Doesn't stop Taylor Swift from clocking up 27 weeks with Cruel Summer, but there you go. Replacing them include Djo, who is clearly reeping the rewards with End Of Beginning creeping into the Top 5 in a blink of an eye, even though he's actually Joe Kerry from Stranger Things. A show I haven't watched yet. There's also Kanye West, who can actually celebrate for once as CARNIVAL from Vultures 1 doesn't immediately vanish and climbs to 9, becoming his 22nd Top 10 smash in his 20-year chart history. Good for him, I suppose, but there's many reasons why people treat him with disdain. You don't need a lie detector to guess why he's a controversial figure, so let's just move on with this review, shall we?

A physical release of Nothing Matters couldn't get The Last Dinner Party into the Top 10, but at least 16 is their best position so far. That always helps, right? Meanwhile, maybe there's a good reason why Central Cee's abandoned the rapping for now, given 29 sees the debut hit for hotly-tipped prospect Pozer, with a song unironically titled Kitchen Stove. The name is the only notable thing about it really. Short, tryhard, and unlikely to be remembered by summertime. That's UK rap for you, everybody!

Then again, US rap is hardly any better, if Bryson Tiller's second solo Top 40 hit is anything to go by. Whatever She Wants is his first effort since 2020's Outta Time, which benefitted from having Drake on it if nothing else. I would give him more credit, but he showed up on a Joel Corry song. So I'll never give him credit at all.

Down at 37, and TikTok is at fault for Muni Long, formerly known as Priscilla Renea for a good decade, showing up here with Made For Me. Having agonisingly missed out at 41 with Hrs and Hrs in 2022, this entry does at least give the 35-year old some love, even though the song is just kinda OK. Not that it's bad or anything, I just couldn't recognise it after it finished playing on Radio 1. Also breaking through at 40 are dance duo NewEra, and one listen to this is proof as to why I have such contempt for dance music at present. It's DIRE. It's CLICHÉD. It's the kind of song Jax Jones wouldn't consider for a B-side. They're not even the best Irish dance duo out there, given the massive success 1-hit wonders Belters Only experienced in 2022. And THAT'S the kind of put-down why Birds In The Sky is so bad. And yet, there are somehow 6 worse tunes than it in the Top 40 today. British public, sort yourselves out. I mean it.

ACR has also affected Zach Bryan, Sonny Fodera, The Weeknd, and Billy Gillies's chances of success, and they all fall out of the 40, joined by new entries from Catfish & The Bottlemen, Selena Gomez, Rudimental, The Blessed Madonna, Dasha, MGK (in reality just Machine Gun Kelly), Alex Warren and Yeat. And yes, this part was rushed.

Out next week for your consumption is the collaborative album between Liam Gallagher & John Squire, meaning the album chart is a closed shop. Shame really. It means that new efforts from Yard Act, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and the Kaiser Chiefs are gonna play second fiddle, as well as Everything Everything, who should deserve the No.1 album next week for the utter gem of a tune that is Cold Reactor. I would go into it in more depth, but that can wait for my Fab 50 in December. As for the singles, Charli XCX is back to underperform again, Liam Payne returns to public pitchforks, Fred Again.. and Skepta continue flogging their new jams, Miley Cyrus has sneaked up on Pharrell Williams and produced some sort of new music out of it, whilst Griff, St. Vincent, Cat Burns, Twenty One Pilots and Headie One are also back for more chart fun (except St. Vincent, obvs). Oh, and Olly Alexander's released Dizzy to represent UK in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. And it's boring. See you next time.

(P.S. Are you gonna upload your charts on time, OCC, or am I gonna have to do it for you? It took 50 minutes for you to do this, and now I'm very unhappy. Don't let me down again. 😤)

the bey song is catchy and growing on me a bit. definitely don’t mind seeing that at number 1 but so happy for djo in the top 5, definitely a breath of fresh air amongst all the cr@p that’s being pushed. and of course sza’s new song is amazing, really makes me want to hug everyone!

im hoping we can see girl in red impact the charts when she drops in april, but i doubt it :/

(p.s. “safari cannot open the page because too many redirects occurred” will be the death of me. what’s a girl to do to comment on a music forum?)

First the old chart appears for half an hour after it should've refreshed, then the new chart wouldn't load for an additional 15 minutes and now most of the comments are either not posting or getting duplicated.

I preferred by far the old website's layout.

Also, then at least the top 40 and top 100 were separated, now the top 40 is simply a copy of the first 40 songs from the top 100.

Example; this weeks #40 appears for the first time in the top 40 and should be marked as NEW, but it shows like in the top 100, as if it is its 4th week in the top 40.

IMHO, why have two different lists if they are identical? 😩

Another busy week in terms of new arrivals, whilst Dua leads the rankings for the first time since the final chart of 2023.

Also checked out ‘Made For Me’ for the first time today and I’m already loving it. Hopefully Muni Long can get a big hit with this! 😊

Hoping to see ‘Dance You Outta My Head’ return to the chart next week following the sad news of Cat Janice’s passing. 31 years old is FAR too young to go. My thoughts are with all her family and friends at this time, especially her son for having to go through losing his mother at such a young age. May she rest in peace! 🙏

This week was crazy in terms of an ACR clearout, with ‘Prada’, ‘Greedy’, ‘DNA (Loving You)’, ‘Popular’, ‘I Remember Everything’, ‘Asking’ and ‘Toxic’ all being placed on it as of today.

Shame to see Zach Bryan crashing down the chart as a result of it, but at least him and Kacey Musgraves gave us one of the best country hits of the decade to date!
