RAYE crowned first ever female BRITs Songwriter of the Year

RAYE is nominated for a record seven awards at this year's BRITs ceremony, too

RAYE has been crowned winner of the BRITs 2024 Songwriter of the Year award, making history as the first-ever female to claim the trophy.

Having already broken records as the artist with the most nominations in a single year, boasting seven to her name at this Saturday's (March 1) ceremony, RAYE goes into the show with a shiny BRIT already under her belt.

The BRITs Songwriter of the Year award was introduced in 2022, looking to shine a spotlight on the musical multihyphenates with an ability to pen a transcendent track to engage the masses.

Judged by a panel of industry experts, RAYE joins Ed Sheeran and Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus) as the third recipient of the award.

This comes as RAYE makes BRITs history as the artist to have secured the most nominations in a single year ever; overtaking Robbie Williams, Craig David and Gorillaz, who bagged six apiece in 1999, 2001 and 2002 respectively.

Reacting to the news, RAYE told BRITs: "It’s too much. The only way I can describe it is a miracle.

"A year and a half ago, as far as the industry was concerned, I was down and out. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that trying again would mean seven BRIT nominations!

A former BRIT School student, RAYE added: "I’m a BRIT kid. I went to BRIT School. It was the goal, to find my way, somehow, to the BRIT Awards. I’ve had some nominations in the past, which I’ve been so grateful for, but this is a whole different thing. Best Album! It’s a joke!

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
