DON'T YOU WANT ME
by HUMAN LEAGUE

The Human League are an electronic pop group originally formed in Sheffield in 1977, and after a reshuffle of their original line-up in late 1980, then comprised of Philip Oakey (vocals), Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall (backing vocals), Adrian Wright (synths and slides), Jo Callis (synths and guitar) and Ian Burden (synths and bass). Don’t You Want Me was the fourth single issued from their ground-breaking UK Official Album Chart Number 1 album Dare, and was inspired by a photo-story in a magazine.

Written by Callis, Oakey and Wright, and produced by Martin Rushent, it wasn’t scheduled to be a single at first as Oakey didn’t think the track was good enough and felt a fourth song from the album to be a rip-off for fans. Released November 27, 1981, it entered the chart at Number 9, before shooting up to the top a week later and stayed there for five weeks to become the UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1. On top of that accolade, Don’t You Want Me became the biggest-selling single of the year.
