The Rolling Stones' Official most streamed songs revealed: Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter and more

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones, anarchic, chaotic and completely brilliant, are one of the biggest bands to ever come from the UK.

Like a cracked mirror image of their contemporaries The Beatles, the Stones originally started life as a blues cover band, before evolving into an outfit that would be declared, live on stage, as the Greatest Rock And Roll Band in the World.

Now, The Rolling Stones have returned with Hackney Diamonds, their first album of original material since 2005, with collaborations with a wide array of music legends including Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder and even Sir Paul McCartney himself.

With Hackney Diamonds cruising towards Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart (it would be the 14th UK Number 1 album overall for Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards), we thought it was high time to reveal the band's most-streamed songs ever in the UK.

With 8 Number 1 singles and 13 Number 1 albums in their belt, they certainly have a lot of material to choose from, so we've dutifully curated the Top 20 most-streamed songs of all time in the UK from The Rolling Stones.

3. Sympathy for the Devil

Released: 1968
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 14
Total UK streams: 86 million

The opening track for the Stones's 1968 seventh album Beggars Banquet. Famously written from the point of view of Satan himself, the song takes us through the Devil taking ownership of several defining atrocities in history, from the death of Jesus Christ to even both World Wars.

A defining track in the band's career, Keith Richards himself has said that the release of Sympathy for the Devil enacted a change in the public reaction's to the band.

"Before, we were just innocent kids looking for a good time, and [the press were saying] 'they're evil, they're evil.' That makes you think, oh, am I evil?"

2. Gimme Shelter

Released: 1969
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 76
Total UK streams: 89 million

An easy choice for fans and critics alike, Gimme Shelter is widely regarded as one of the Stones's greatest-ever compositions. Despite this, the track was never released as a single, but became a staple of the band's live performances from 1971.

Originally featuring guest vocals from singer Merry Clayton, the band have performed it with an increasingly impressive roster of female music icons over the years, everyone from Lady Gaga and Florence + The Machine to Mary J Blige.

1. Paint It Black

Released: 1966
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1
Total UK streams: 119 million

Widely regarded as the first instance of a sitar being featured on a chart-topping track, Paint It Black (or Paint It, Black) features heavy Middle Eastern and Indian influencers and was noted for its innovative instrumentation for the time.

Paint It Black would become the Stones's sixth overall UK Number 1 single, and also their third chart-topper in the Billboard Hot 100. Its classic status still endures today, clearly, as it is by and far the most-streamed Rolling Stones track in the UK, claiming 119 million streams and counting.

It's influence on pop culture is palpable  - Westworld fans will also recognise the song from being used in the sci-fi series's mind-bending second season.
