Olivia Lunny has been making waves in her native Canada over the past couple of years (since winning TV music competition The Launch in 2018), but her new single Sad To See You Happy feels like it could be her big international breakout moment.

Out today, Sad To See You Happy is the kind of pop song that has an instant familiarity about it, yet also feels like it comes from the modern school of Olivia Rodrigo/Julia Michaels alt-pop.

Musing about an ex who is doing more than okay now thanks very much, Sad To See You Happy's sharp and meticulously crafted lyrics are delivered with the kind of quiet sass that most of us could only wish to pull off - something that extends to its brilliantly macabre music video.

"This song was so fun to write!" Oliva said of the track, adding that she and its co-writers Jenson Vaughan, Shaun Frank and AJ Healey we were playing around with... the concept of 'love you to death' and being 'sad to see someone happy'. We loved the idea of playing off of an oxymoron - this was the through line in our songwriting process."

She quite rightly adds that "Sad to See You Happy is a very fun, vibrant song at first glance, the lyrics however, are subtly darker and reminiscent. The contradiction of these two make for a unique combo and will hopefully leave the listeners intrigued and dancing along!"

So there you go. If you're a fan of Sad To See You Happy, her tracks Think Of Me and Bedsheets are very much in the same vein and well worth a listen.
