Mae Stephens and Meghan Trainor team up on infectious new single Mr. Right

Mae Stephens

What a bloomin' year Mae Stephens has had, eh? Since finding herself going viral with breakout release If We Ever Broke Up, the 19-year-old singer-songwriter's earned her first-ever Top 20 hit, supported BLACKPINK in London and bagged a load of festival bookings.

And she's just getting started, as this week Mae unleashes her brand-new single Mr. Right. A team-up with Meghan Trainor, the song sees the pair navigate the ever-complex world of dating with a sprinkling of their signature sass.

Now, being the legend that she is, Mae's actually given us a sneaky First Listen to the song ahead of its release this Friday August 4. Let's see what you've got in store, shall we?

Assessing the dating pool atop glittering, summer-ready disco production, Mae explains she's totally happy in her own company but is (begrudgingly) open to seeing what's out there on the fella front.

"I've been on my own, I've been on my own for a while. I've been putting off giving someone else all my time. Maybe I should call, maybe I should give it a smile. Grit my teeth and bear it, oh, it's been a while..."

Meghan's verse is equally-infectious, with her oh-so-silky vocal runs perfectly complementing the breeziest of instrumentals.

"I know what I deserve, I deserve the whole damn world. And if you can't provide it, then I'm gonna keep swiping. Maybe I should find my Romeo, but I'm way too good at being alone. And I didn't even really wanna go, I'm much better on my own, and now I really wanna go home..."

Then comes the earworm of a chorus, with its quirky lyricism detailing the realisation that Mr. Right isn't always so easy to find. "Darlin' I'm not one for bad breath, or that yellow stain on your vest. Boy, you're really not passing my test, so I'll be swiping on to the rest."

Chatting about the track, Mae says: "Meghan is an artist I have idolised for years! She is the artist I aspire to be, so working with her has been an absolute dream come true. Especially working with a huge artist for the first time; she just makes me feel so heard and comfortable. She is the ideal artist, the kindest person I have ever met and the most amazing MOTHER, Both to her kids and also as a role model music mother for me."

Meghan adds: "I am beyond honoured that Mae asked me to be a part of this song.

"I have been a big fan of hers from afar on social media and was so excited when her team reached out. I am convinced that she is my long-lost little sister, and I am so excited that we now get to have a song together. Mae is a young legend, and I cannot wait for more and more people to discover her and to hear her incredible song writing and vocal skills. She is the sweetest and most talented girl and deserves all the success in the world."
