Barbie named UK's most popular film of 2023 alongside John Wick 4, Super Mario Bros and Oppenheimer

With £200 spent every minute on the billion-dollar blockbuster in the UK, it's official. She's everything, he's just Ken.

Barbie, the billion-dollar blockbuster from director Greta Gerwig, has proved that life in plastic is indeed fantastic, ending 2023 as the most popular film with consumers in the UK, according to a new report by BASE using Official Charts data.

This comes as little surprise, of course, given that Barbie dominated conversation when it hit cinemas last summer. Not only did the phenomenon of 'Barbenheimer' - where fans attended double-screenings of Barbie and Christopher Nolan's biopic Oppenheimer - prove a healthy boost to box offices around the globe, the film became the highest-grossing movie by a female director of all time worldwide.

Now, we can reveal that Barbie secured more than 770,000 transactions in the UK last year across digital and disk sales, plus film rentals, to top the Official All-Video Chart. Barbie - starring Margot Robbie as the titular doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken - split the stats with 402,000 disk and digital units sold, as well as 368,000 rentals.

Barbie was also the highest-performing film at the UK box office last year, with a total gross of £95.6 million. Altogether, Barbie's success in 2023 meant that there was a collective £200 spent per minute on the film last year by consumers across all visual channels.

Keanu Reeves' ultra-noir action sequel John Wick: Chapter 4 came in second place, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie - starring Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser - reached third.

In fourth place, we have James Cameron's ambitious Avatar: The Way of Water, the first of a planned four sequels taking back to Pandora, while the live-action adaption of Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical came in fifth. Originally a runaway hit on the West End, the film memorably starred Oscar-winner Emma Thompson as the villainous Miss Trunchbull.

Avatar: The Way of Water tops the Official All-Video Sales Chart for 2023 (featuring digital download and physical sales), which also includes the long-awaited Indiana Jones sequel, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, starring Harrison Ford and Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge (5).

And where Barbie goes, Oppenheimer soon follows. You couldn't have guessed that Christopher Nolan's biopic of J Robert Oppenheimer - the father of the atom bomb - would have become such a sensation, but with the help of bravura performances from Cillian Murphy as Oppenehimer as well as Emily Blunt (who just scored her first Oscar nomination for her role as Oppenheimer's wife Kitty) and Florence Pugh, the historical drama ended 2023 as the biggest-seller on physical formats. Overall, the film generated £1.1 million of sales from Blu-Ray alone (topping the Official Blu-Ray Chart at year's end, too).
