LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS
by MUD
Written and produced by songwriters ChinniChap aka English-American Nicky Chinn and Australian Mike Chapman, Lonely This Christmas was British group Mud's (guitarist Rob Davis, lead vocalist Les Gray, drummer Dave Mount and bassist Ray Stiles) seventh chart entry and their second Number 1 single in the UK, following 1974’s Tiger Feet, spending four weeks at the top to claim the title of the UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 in December 1974 and January 1975.
It was also the third Number 1 of the year for the songwriters, after Tiger Feet and Suzi Quatro’s Devil Gate Drive in addition to previous chart-toppers by The Sweet and Suzi Quatro the year before. Entering the chart at the end of November, Lonely This Christmas climbed to the summit in time for the Christmas week’s chart, selling over 750,000 copies. Of the few times that Christmas was actually in the title of a Christmas Number 1, this was sort-of the first time it had happened in consecutive years following Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody in 1973.
