Linkin Park's My December should've been in the Top 40 at least throughout the month.

Can someone explain why songs like Do They Know Its Christmas,Last Christmas and the like only say that Band Aid has its highest chart place of number 12 when it was number 1 in the 80s also Whams record seems to be missing the 80s and 90s when it charted?I noticed the same thing with Legend Bob Marley And The Wailers?

I actually agree with quite a lot of these, but there are some that I'd change. I'd put 'Fairytale of New York' at the top with a higher score, 'Santa Tell Me' would be a lot lower down, as would 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. I'd keep 'Last Christmas' in the same place, though.

Although I am not much of a fan of River I would have preferred it loads over Perfect getting to number 1. I hope it can in the next few weeks though

Hey everyone, this is my review of the UK Christmas top 100 chart:
- Congratulations to Ed Sheeran, who gets his third week at #1 with Perfect, and also his first Christmas #1. He just beats himself and Eminem's track River to #1, which debuts at #2.
- And the late George Michael's former group Wham! have to settle for #3 with Last Christmas. It is their highest position with the track except its release year of 1985, but I and many others would have liked it to get to the top spot almost exactly a year after Michael's passing on 25 December 2016.
- Mariah Carey rounds off the top 4, and The Pogues appear at #7. NF also manages to reach the top 10 for the first time with Let You Down.
- There are 16 Christmas songs in the top 40, but, strangely, none that had not already been in that region last week.
- We have another debut and a re-entry from Eminem's #1 album Revival, and Ramz also climbs ten to #17 with Barking.
- Not a great deal to mention regarding the rest of the top 100, and there are very few Christmas songs below the top 50, so its great to see them all so high up! bear in mind, until 2016 not a single one could make the top 10 and very few the top 40!
- That's about it, hope you all enjoyed my review, and soon I will be ranking every Christmas song in the top 100!
- Hope everyone has a great Christmas! :D

Good review as usual mate! :D
I was definitely one of those people who would've preferred 'Last Christmas' at #1 than 'Perfect', but I like the latter a lot too as you know. How do you think Christmas songs are going to be performing this time next year? I think very similarly, although 'Last Christmas' might be a little lower unfortunately.
Regarding the same Christmas songs in the Top 40 as last week, I believe that Spotify playlists are responsible for this, as the Christmas playlists don't really change & people just keep on streaming the same songs. It seems like the festive spirit peaked early for British music fans in general.
I'm surprised that we don't have more Christmas songs charting lower down the chart as well as in the Top 40. 'Perfect' will probably remain at #1 going into 2018, but I still think 'River' is a contender afterwards.

well, I think things will be similar next year, but of course it depends on who releases a single just in time to become Christmas #1, like the Perfect remixes and River this year. but I presume others will see what Ed has done and try and emulate his success next year, unless rules are changed of course.

True. If the Beyoncé duet of 'Perfect' never happened, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' would've been #1 last week... that's incredible now that I think about it!
Sorry I need to sign off so soon, but I'll be back again tomorrow! Have a good evening. :)

Ed started the year at #1 and #2 on the singles chart, and now he's ending the year at #1 and #2 on the singles chart. It really has been an incredible year for him.
It's cool to see 'Last Christmas' as the highest charting Christmas song of the week, even if my personal favourite Christmas song is 'Fairytale of New York'.
I absolutely love seeing 'Let You Down' hit the Top 10. It's one of my favourite tracks of the year, and I thought that it might stall at #11, so I'm really happy for it!
Kind of weird to see more Christmas songs in the chart last week than this week though. Some may enter next week though, as that chart includes Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, where Christmas songs will undoubtedly absolutely take over Spotify.
I love seeing '÷' selling over 100,000 for a 6th week, and 'Revival' debuting straight in at #1.

yeah, I agree that it was weird and a bit annoying to see not very many Christmas songs in the top 40 this week. and as I was telling Piran, this is literally the worst day for a Christmas chart, as the days for Christmas songs taking over Spotify haven't quite hit yet, but wont have enough of an effect next week either as theres three more days for them to drop. so its disappointing. :/
anyway, I'm about to post my ranking of every Christmas song in the top 100 so I hope you can check that out! speak to you soon! :D

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran earns a third consecutive week at #1 on the singles chart & gives Ed his first ever Christmas #1! Following a duet with Beyoncé a couple of weeks ago, the hit experiences yet another boost thanks to a symphony with Andrea Bocelli.

- ‘Perfect’ accumulated 85,000 total sales this week (45,000 through downloads & 6 million through streaming). It has shifted 1.23M copies in total in the UK & has been certified double platinum by the BPI today.

- ‘Perfect’ is also at #1 on the airplay chart for a fifth non-consecutive week.

- The Official Chart Update was reasonably accurate this week, although it had ‘17’ in the Top 10 instead of ‘Let You Down’.

- Despite being the most streamed song of the week, ‘River’ by Eminem ft Ed Sheeran makes its debut at #2 today. I knew just by looking at the names on this collaboration, it would easily be a strong contender for Christmas #1 despite being released last week & I’m very sure it’ll become an official single in the coming weeks. It also has hit potential for sounding like a sequel to ‘Love The Way You Lie’, particularly with the subject matter being Eminem rapping dexterously about a toxic relationship & both him & Ed bring intensity & sound convincing in their parts. It also helps that the production grabs your attention immediately, with the beat that’s heavy on maudlin piano & a strummed acoustic guitar. Overall, as Christmas songs start to drop out, this still has a strong chance to start 2018 as a future #1 & honestly, I really want that to happen!

- Eminem’s other debut on the Official Chart today is ‘In Your Head’, which is a new entry at #19. So ‘Revival’ doesn’t seem to be going down too well with most critics so far, with many calling this the worst album of his career so far. While I don’t understand where all the hate for this album is coming from, I’m surprised that this is one of the most streamed tracks from it so far, because it’s only okay at best. Eminem opts for a choppier flow than usual, which takes away any intensity or emotive charisma here, which we’re used to hearing when he covers more serious topics. In the lyrics, he reflects about his regrets throughout his career, but it seems like he’s most frustrated with his Slim Shady persona in particular (his alter-ego that was described by Eminem as an evil yet funny side of himself). The production is what ruins this for me a little though, as I didn’t think sampling ‘Zombies’ by The Cranberries was a good fit for the song & Scram Jones’ work on the verses really doesn’t help as the instrumentation is just boring. Eminem has always been one of the most memorable rappers in the industry, mainly for his skilful rhymes & quick flow, but he’s done this sort of music before but better. I’d recommend checking the rest of the album, as for this, it’s one of the more likely cuts from it that you’re going to skip.

- The biggest climber in the Top 40 wasn’t even a Christmas song, as ‘Barking’ by Ramz jumps 27-17. I think it can go Top 10 within the next two weeks, as the festive songs drop out. I’m very pleased that ‘Let You Down’ by NF finally hit the Top 10 this week though!

- On the albums chart, ‘Revival’ becomes Eminem’s eighth #1, tying the record with ABBA & Led Zeppelin for most consecutive #1 albums.

- ‘Revival’ debuted at the top spot shifting 132,000 copies across downloads & streaming equivalent sales, which is the second biggest debut of any album in 2017.

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘÷‘ by Ed Sheeran (1-2), ‘The Thrill Of It All’ by Sam Smith (2-3), ‘Beautiful Trauma’ by P!NK (3-4) & ‘Human’ by Rag’n’Bone Man (stationary at #5).

- So far in 2017, there have been 15 #1 singles & 31 #1 albums.

- As for the final chart of 2017, the only songs I see breaking into the Top 40 are re-entries for more Christmas songs or for the biggest hits of the year. There might be some more ‘Revival’ tracks from Eminem if the ones that are currently charting drop far enough next week.

- These are currently the Top 10 best-selling Christmas songs ever in the UK according to The National Student:

#1: Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas? (1984)
#2: Boney M – Mary’s Boy Child (1978)
#3: WHAM! – Last Christmas (1984)
#4: Harry Belafonte – Mary’s Boy Child (1957)
#5: Band Aid 20 – Do They Know It’s Christmas? (2004)
#6: Slade – Merry Xmas Everybody (1973)
#7: Bing Crosby – White Christmas (1942)
#8: East 17 – Stay Another Day (1994)
#9: Cliff Richard – The Millennium Prayer (1999)
#10: Johnny Mathis – When A Child Is Born (1976)

Surprisingly, despite being the most downloaded Christmas hit since the launch of iTunes, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey is only at #16 on this list.

- Finally, the Top 100 songs of 2017 will be counted down on Radio 1 next Friday from 1pm.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend & a Merry Christmas! :)

Hey Piran! tbh I was quite disappointed with the charts today, as no Christmas song re-entered into the top 40 that wasn't there already. there may be more next week, but I doubt it as over half the week will be after Christmas so they'll have time to drop down.
River has grown on me a bit this week, but its still not his best. and I haven't really heard revival yet so I don't really know any others, and I think I missed that one at #19 when the charts were on. I'm gonna do a review in a sec so I hope you can check that out! :D

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I wish there was a bit more movement in the charts in general, as was only one song re-entering the Top 40 ('Walk On Water').
Haha, yeah, I prefer it when Greg announced 40-26 & then played the Top 25 in full.
'River' is certainly one of the better tracks from 'Revival' to be honest, but I really don't think his album is as bad as many critics are making it out to be.
Are you going to upload a new chart tonight? As usual, my next one will be up on Sunday.
I'll check out your review shortly, but it might have to be tomorrow as I won't be on Disqus for very long tonight.

yeah, the charts were quite boring tbh, although the 22nd is pretty much the worst day for a Christmas chart, as its before the Christmas songs get binge-streamed then the 29th is too late for them to do well too as its four days after Christmas.
I'm not sure which way I preferred it tbh, but I guess they changed it as there were some songs they didn't have clean copies of available. I don't mind it this way, as long as they actually do what theyre meant to, and skip fallers and old songs, and play climbers and new ones. for me, playing New Rules today (which was down 6) and skipping loads of Christmas songs was outrageous, this is exactly what they shouldn't do with this system. I kinda get it if its gonna be its last week on the chart, but given all the festive songs will drop out soon, it should stay on longer.
yeah, ill have a chart up tonight if I can, hopefully not too late, maybe 8/9. hope you can check it out! :)

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, the charts will probably be reasonably stationary next week too, as Christmas songs will be streamed for the next three days & then like you said, they just collapse in performance for the next four days.
Another thing I don't like about the new system is that the host can choose what they want to play, whereas they had to play every song in the Top 25 previously, hence there couldn't be bias.
I don't think I'll be on longer than another 10 minutes tonight, but I'll leave a comment there tomorrow!
I'm also now about to check out your review of the actual chart! ;)

It's cool to see 'Perfect' get an 3rd week at #1 and to get the Christmas #1, but I would've much preferred to see 'River' get there instead. It's still holding strong at #1 on Spotify and iTunes though, so I have hope for it in the coming weeks! It'll also be really interesting on Monday when http://www.mediatraffic.de/ updates its UK section to see just how far ahead of 'River' 'Perfect' was, and to see whether it was a close race or whether 'Perfect' had a huge lead.

EDIT: On the Spotify chart for 22/12/2017, 'River' loses its crown and drops 2 places to #3. It didn't really lose all that many streams though, it's just that 'Last Christmas' (#1) and 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' (#2) are starting their in the run-up to Christmas. The only other non-Christmas song in the Top 10 is 'rockstar' (#8).

I'm also ecstatic to see 'Let You Down' reach the Top 10, and hopefully climb in the coming weeks as the Christmas songs drop out of the chart. Good to see 'Barking' climb so much as well; the track has really grown on me over the past week.

I don't really know why 'In Your Head' charted so high either. It's one of the weaker songs from the album and it never really got that high on either Spotify or iTunes. 'Believe' seemed to do better on streams than 'In Your Head', so I'm surprised that it didn't make a debut.

Both 'Revival' and '÷' sold over 100,000 this week, which is pretty huge. This also brings '÷'s total to well over 2.6m, and it just needs around 70,000 more sales before the end of 2017 to end the year with over 2.7m sales, the highest total since Adele's '21' sold just under 3.8m in 2011.

Great to see 'Revival' sell so well in its first week and to become the 2nd fastest selling album of the year, selling even more than I predicted! This week also marks a couple of other landmarks in the album chart, as it's 'x's 175th week inside the album chart Top 40, and its 183rd consecutive week inside the Top 75, further extending its lead as the longest consecutive run in the albums chart Top 75. It's also '+'s 300th week inside the albums chart Top 100 this week, which means that '+' has spent just 28 weeks outside of the region since its release!

Ed Sheeran's got another record to add to his list today as well, as 'Thinking Out Loud' passes 1 billion streams and joins 'Shape of You' in the exclusive club. This marks the first time that an artist has 2 songs that have passed the landmark. Also on Spotify, 'Save Myself' passes 'Bibia Be Ye Ye' again, and is now a mere 10,000 streams ahead of it. All songs on '÷' have also passed 90m streams now, and 'Eraser' may manage to pass 100m before the end of the year as it's at 97.1m now.

Seeing the Top 100 songs of the year will be very interesting. I've got no doubt that 'Shape of You' will be 1st and 'Despacito' will be 2nd, and I think that 'Castle on the Hill', 'Galway Girl' and 'Perfect' should all make the Top 10 as well. It'll be cool to see where 'Havana' lands, as the list shouldn't include the 300:1 ratio that sends it down to #13 this week (it would've been either #5 or #6 without it) and it got certified platinum a little while back.

Do you think that any album tracks from '÷' will make the Top 100? 'Happier' and 'New Man' have been doing very well on streams throughout the entire year, but I don't know whether they'll be able to make the Top 100.

Hey Gameskiller! I hope you're having a good weekend. :)
Yeah, I think 'River' will retake the #1 on Spotify by the middle of next week at the very latest, although it'll probably still remain at #2 next week, but there obviously won't be an Official Chart Update tomorrow.
Interestingly, the Top 3 songs on the my personal chart this week are in the exact same order as that of the UK chart!
Regarding the Top 100 songs of the year, 'Shape Of You' will absolutely be at #1, with 'Despacito' at #2. I think 'Castle On The Hill' might have a chance at #3, but 'Unforgettable' & probably 'New Rules' will be very high up & I agree with you that 'Perfect' might make the Top 10 & yeah, 'Galway Girl' might be able to reach the region too.
Here's the link to my new chart: https://crownnote.com/charts/piran-delves/pirans-top-40-56
