Ed Sheeran could be heading for an Official Chart double this Friday, with the singer-songwriter leading the way on both the Official Singles and Albums Charts in today’s Official Chart Update.

Official Singles Chart Update

At Number 1 on today’s Official Singles Chart Update is Perfect. Boosted by the recent duet version featuring Beyonce, a new edit of Perfect featuring Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is also set to be released this Friday in time for the biggest chart race of the year - the UK’s Official Christmas Number 1 – putting Ed on course to be a strong contender for the 2017 crown. See the full list of Christmas Number 1 2017 contenders.

X Factor champs Rak-Su hold at Number 2 today with Dimelo ft. Wyclef Jean and Naughty Boy, while Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You sits at three. Should Mariah maintain her momentum, the song will reach its highest position since its original peak of Number 2 set back in 1994. (14); Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone (16); Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (17); It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas by Michael Buble (18); Elton John’s Step Into Christmas (20); Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (22)’ Driving Home For Christmas from Chris Rea (24); Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade (30); Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me (33); Leona Lewis’ One More Sleep (35); John Lennon and Yoko Ono classic Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (36); and Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime (39).

Finally, grime artist Ramz is set for his Top 40 debut with Barking, up 10 to Number 31.

Official Albums Chart Update

On the albums front, Ed’s record-shattering ÷ could be on for an 18th week at Number 1, up one place from last Friday’s position. As the UK flocks to pick up Christmas presents, ÷ is an obvious choice. The album features more Top 10 singles on it than any other studio album in history (10), and is the second fastest-selling vinyl album of the last 25 years too.

Elsewhere in this week’s Official Chart Update Top 5, Sam Smith’s The Thrill Of It All slips to Number 2, P!nk rises one rung to Number 3 with Beautiful Trauma, Paloma Faith’s The Architect is on course for a leap to Number 4, and Michael Ball & Alfie Boe are at 5 with Together Again.

Other albums set for big climbs this week are Rag’n’Bone Man’s Human, up seven to Number 6 following his performances on BBC shows Sounds Like Friday Night and The Year in Music 2017, and George Michael’s Twenty Five, which floats six positions to Number 13 as the first anniversary of his death approaches.

In fact bar Ed Sheeran,Rag and Bone Man and Sam Smith there have been 25 one week wonders at the top of the album charts. The poorest showing ever in history!

After months of one week wonders at the top of the album charts at least you can rely on the popular selling power of Sam and Ed to return to the top.

Hey OCC, why are you allowing Ed Sheeran's different versions of 'Perfect' be added together? if one of them is solo, one has beyonce, and one had Bocelli on it, surely they are 3 different songs. Don't allow this to happen now or it'll set a trend for the future. Act now this week, and stop others doing it next year. What a farce. It'll make a laughing stock of the UK Charts

I would love it if Eminem was the Christmas number one album. Having said that, Ed Sheerans on that too so no getting away from him! I don't think remixes should count towards single sales though. They should be treated as separate records.

15 Christmas songs in the Top 40? That's amazing to see! :)
It's cool to see 'Perfect' expected for a second week at #1, but I'm very surprised that Andrea Bocelli is featuring on the next remix! That should be an interesting listen. :D
All of the Top 5 of the albums chart is looking good too, especially with '÷' on course to go back to the top spot (Gameskiller, it looks like you might be right with your prediction for a total of 18 weeks at #1 for it). ;)

Haha yeah. It'd be amazing to see '÷' go back to #1 this week even if it's for no other reason than finally fulfilling my prediction! Last week it sold 56,000, just behind 'The Thrill Of It All' with 58,000, which brings its lifetime total to 2.46m. With 3 weeks of the year left to go, a 2.6m total is looking more and more likely.

Was that 56k sold or streaming included?

Are you joking? As much as I love Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, I think it’s really sad that it can climb to Number 3. It just shows that no one is buying music any more and also that streams are represented inappropriately. The charts have officially stopped to be a reflection of the most popular songs.

I think you are wrong as it is much more ofna reflection of what people are listening to. Back in the day you bought a record and that was it, you may have bought 5 singles in a week but listened to 1 all the time and left the others to gather dust. Now the amount of times you listen to a record is counted so surely that is a more accurate record of what is popular as youbwant than what has been bought.

Streaming included, though I'm pretty sure most of it was from sales.

I have to disagree. I think 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' was completely deserving of its #3 peak last week.
Yeah, it wasn't selling very well, but sales figures have declined massively in the past few years anyway. Streaming is becoming such a popular way to consume music, this year more than ever, so how is including it in the chart formula inappropriately representing the most popular songs?
Just going back to a pure sales chart wouldn't make it an "official chart" anymore.
