The Official Top 40 biggest albums of 2017 so far

This year's most sold and streamed albums so far, including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Little Mix and Take That.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ album is the fastest-selling album by a male of all time, featuring more Top 10 singles on it than any other studio album in history, and has spent more than 30 consecutive weeks in the Top 3. It’s easy to see why it is the biggest album of 2017 so far.

With 2.2 million combined sales made up of 1.7m physical and download sales, plus 511,000 streaming equivalent units, Ed’s third studio album is above and beyond the year’s biggest album as we enter the final quarter of the year.

In fact, Ed’s album is so huge that it has outsold the next biggest release by 3:1. Tallying a still-impressive 767,000 across all formats, Rag’n’Bone Man’s Human, which was revealed as the fastest-selling male debut album of the decade upon its release in February, is at Number 2.

Despite being released in 2014, Ed Sheeran’s second studio album X continues to sell well and is currently the third biggest album of the year. The collection has notched up 280,000 combined sales in 2017 alone, while its total figure stands at a mighty 3.1m.

Rag'n'Bone Man with his Official Number 1 Album Award

Drake’s ‘playlist’ album More Life, which peaked at Number 2 behind ÷ in March, is the UK’s fourth biggest record of the year so far (271,000), and Little Mix’s Glory Days – released in November 2016 - continues to hold up well in fifth place (270,000).

Stormzy’s Number 1 album Gang Signs & Prayer is Number 6 in the Official Chart year-to-date rundown, ahead of Take That’s eighth record Wonderland (7). Despite missing out on Number 1 (again, held off by Ed), Wonderland still managed to shift an impressive 113,000 in its first week.

Elsewhere, The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Moana (8) proved a slow burner at first, opening at Number 88 on the Official Albums Chart in December 2016, but it has gone on to become a favourite this year, reaching Number 7 in April and so far logging 39 weeks in the Top 40.

Chart-topping albums released this year that have sold well include Harry Styles’ self-titled debut (15), The Beatles’ Sgt Peppers reissue (16), and Kasabian’s sixth record For Crying Out Loud (19).

Following his death on Christmas Day 2016, George Michael’s 1998 retrospective Ladies & Gentlemen is currently placed at 21.

And there's an incredible chart feat to recognise featuring the oldest ever recording artist. At the incredible age of 100, Dame Vera Lynn is currently the best-selling female album released in 2017.

The Forces’ Sweetheart makes an appearance with her latest album 100 at Number 28 on the Official Charts Company’s year-to-date list. Released back in March to celebrate her 100th birthday, Lynn became the oldest living artist ever to score a Top 10 album on the Official Albums Chart, and the album has since gone on to secure BPI gold status, out-performing latest albums from the likes of Zara Larsson, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey and Imelda May.

With anticipated new albums still to come in Q4 from the likes of Taylor Swift, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson and Paloma Faith, it’s all to play for through to 2017’s final whistle.

Finally, several debut albums also make the Top 40, including Zara Larsson’s So Good (32), J Hus’ Common Sense (37) and Dua Lipa’s self-titled (40).
