It's the album we didn't know we needed...until now. Cher has recorded a full album of ABBA covers following her role in the musical film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

The singer and actress has been teasing the possibility of a new album over the last few months, but has now finally confirmed a few details about the project.

"After I did Fernando [in the film], I thought it would be fun to do an album of Abba songs, so I did!" She told the Today Show in the US.

"It’s not what you think of when you think Abba, because I did it in a different way."

The superstar recently suggested on Twitter her new album would be released in September, though no official release date has been announced. Check out 18 more exciting albums due out this year here.

Cher stars as the mother of the character played by Meryl Streep in the sequel, despite being just three years her junior. She performs ABBA's Fernando in the film with Andy Garcia, who plays hotel manager Fernando Cienfuegos.

The Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again soundtrack is on course to debut inside the Top 10 on this week's Official UK Albums Chart. With the film's worldwide release this Friday (July 20), only time will tell if it can match the success of The Greatest Showman album.

Cher's last album, Closer To The Truth, was released in 2013 and reached Number 4 on the Official Albums Chart and became her most successful record since her 1998 album Believe. Look back at Cher's Official Chart history in full
