The seventh X Factor winner to claim the UK Official Singles Christmas Chart Number 1, Ben Haenow’s ‘winners single’ had been originally composed by Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco for Tedder’s band OneRepublic, whose own version of the song had not been issued as a single previously. Released December 14, 2014, Something I Need entered the chart at Number 1 for one week, and for the first time, audio streams counted towards the total of 214,000 copies sold on the first week.
A sign of changing times in the music industry, Ben Haenow would be the last X Factor winner to ever claim the Official Christmas Number 1, and the once-dominant star-making machine itself would flitter out of existence four years later.
