This week’s extraordinary launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has revitalised sales of the original Star Wars movies, according to Official Charts data.

In fact, Star Wars fever is set to send a box set of the movie’s Original Trilogy into Official Video Top 20 for the first time in more than 10 years.

The Original Trilogy (comprising Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) is likely to return to the Official Video Top 20 at Number 17 (up from 36 last week) when the chart is announced this Sunday. The last time the set made the Top 20 was in summer 2005, after the cinema release of Revenge of the Sith.

In turn, the Prequel Trilogy (comprising Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) is at 37 (up from 54). The complete Saga is on course to climb from 161 to 116. Between them the three sets have sold a total of 40,000 copies up to midnight last night (Thursday).

Across their lifespan, the three DVD/Blu-Ray box sets have sold in excess of 3.6m units in the UK, the Original Trilogy claiming sales of 2.6m-plus on its own. In turn, the Prequel Trilogy has sold over 600,000 copies, with the Complete Saga closing in on 400,000.

Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens reunites many of the characters from the original Star Wars movie franchise, which launched in 1977, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca the wookie.
