The Human League have topped the Official Scottish Singles Chart today, thanks to a social media campaign by fans of Aberdeen Football Club.

The English group’s single, Don’t You Want Me, has gone in at Number 1 on the regional chart, knocking Dvbbs and Borgeous Tsunami (Jump) FT Tinie Tempah off the summit following Aberdeen’s Scottish League Cup win last Sunday (March 16).

The track is popular with the club’s supporters, who change the lyrics of the chorus to “Peter Pawlett, baby” after their 23-year-old midfielder Peter Pawlett, who, incidentally was born 10 years after Don’t You Want Me took the Official Christmas Number 1 spot in 1981.

"I'm absolutely astounded to see what's happened this week,” Peter Pawlett told OfficialCharts.com. “Though I'm gutted to have missed playing the final last weekend due to injury, I massively appreciate the way the Aberdeen fans have got on board and bought the record to make it Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in Scotland. A double win!"

“I just want to say a massive thank you to all who backed the campaign and made it so massive!” adds Richard Albiston, the founder of the campaign's Facebook page.

It’s not just football fans who’ve been backing the Don’t You Want Me campaign. Scottish golfing champion Paul Lawrie has spent the week driving a car branded with the campaign’s hashtag which was donated by John Clark Mini, Aberdeen.
