Taylor Swift has made chart history in the US with her new single Blank Space.

The singer’s latest release from her 1989 album leaps from 13 to Number 1 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, knocking her previous single Shake It Off from pole position.

In doing so, Taylor becomes the first female artist in Billboard’s 56-year history to succeed herself at the top spot.

Blank Space marks the singer’s third Number 1 in America, following Shake It Off and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, which spent three weeks at the summit in 2012.

Elsewhere on the Hot 100, Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass is at Number 2, Hozier’s Take Me To Church reaches a new peak at 6, Sam Smith earns his third US Top 10 with I’m Not The Only One (9), and Nick Jonas leaps 23 to 10 with Jealous.

Last month, Taylor’s 1989 became the fastest-selling female artist album of 2014 in the UK, where it shifted 90,000 in its opening week.

The collection’s lead single Shake It Off peaked at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart and has sold 570,000 copies in the UK to date, while Blank Space has so far reached Number 11.
