Elton John will no doubt be celebrating today as he lands his first UK Number 1 album in 22 years, with a little help from Aussie electronic duo, Pnau.

A selection of Elton John’s 1970-1976 classics have been reimagined for summer 2012, courtesy of Australian electronic duo Pnau, the result of which comes in the form of critically acclaimed album Good Morning To The Night. With the music icon’s blessings, Pnau, who first rose to public consciousness via Nick Littlemore’s 2009 side project Empire Of The Sun, have unlocked and reworked the original masters with added loops, samples and their own material too, to create a revolutionary new collection of interpretations.

Elton signed Pnau after listening to one of the duo’s own earlier records, and it is this eye for talent that has helped deliver Elton his first chart-topping album since 1990’s greatest hits collection, The Very Best Of Elton John.

It doesn’t stop there, lead title track Good Morning To The Night now also follows in the footsteps of Muse’s Survival as an official song of the London 2012 Olympics. Elton performed the track recently in Ibiza with Pnau and it is already tipped as the anthem of the summer.

Elsewhere in the Top 5, Maroon 5’s Overexposed climbs one place to Number 2, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange is at 3, while Paul Simon’s Graceland (4) climbs four places this week. Ed Sheeran’s debut release + completes the Top 5.

New entries

A total of four new entries secure a midweek Top 40 placing. Led by Elton John vs Pnau (1), new offering Life Is Good (8) gives US rapper Nas his first UK Top 10, while Andrew Lloyd Webber’s current Superstar TV talent search helps bring about the release of a new digitally remastered version of the original studio cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar (22).

Finally, our thoughts are with all those affected by the week’s tragic events at the screening of new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado. Hans Zimmer’s original soundtrack to the film settles at Number 36 today.
