A new pop princess took the throne for the very first time five years ago today, spelling the end of Black Eyed Peas’ Boom Boom Power!

It’s always exciting to see the ‘birth’ of a new star, to be right there at the beginning of their chart story. Five years ago today, a new chart tale was just starting out for Essex teenager Pixie Lott, thanks to her insanely catchy debut single Mama Do.

Although she was only 18 at the time of her debut hit, Pixie – real name Victoria – had been bubbling under pop’s radar for quite some time.

After being signed by huge US music producer LA Reid at just 15, Pixie spent her time recording and writing for other artists, biding her time until the day she herself would get her name on a record all of her own.

Mama Do went straight in at the top, deposing Black Eyed PeasBoom Boom Pow from its second (non-consecutive) week at the top. It’s sold almost 350,000 copies.

Mama Do was the first of three chart-toppers for Pixie. Boys And Girls made Number 1 in September 2009 and All About Tonight hit the summit two years later. Pixie has scored 11 Top 40 hits, with seven of them making the Top 10. All About Tonight is her biggest selling single, with over 400,000 copies sold.

Her most recent hit was Nasty, which peaked at Number 9 in March this year. Pixie’s self-titled album – her third – is due for release in August.

Check out the video for All About Tonight before we take a look at the rest of the Top 5 today in ’09.

2: Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow

After another week at the top, it was death by Pixie for the Peas’ second Number 1. Read all about it on Boom Boom Pow’s very own Flashback

3: Agnes – Release Me

Known in her native Sweden as the winner of the second series of Swedish Idol, Agnes was one of the surprise hits of the summer in 2009. Rising one place to the song’s peak of Number 3 this week, Agnes saw her star rise internationally thanks to her appearance on Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s huge TV competition to select their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. She had one more Top 40 hit with I Need You Now, but there have been no more UK hits since. Release Me has sold over 410,000 copies in the UK.

4: Dizzee Rascal & Armand van Helden – Bonkers

Dizzee’s second chart-topper takes a further tumble, dropping two places this week in 2009. It was the second of three consecutive Number 1s for the rapper, and out of five overall – sandwiched between Dance Wiv Me FT Calvin Harris, and Holiday. Bonkers sure has the smarts when it comes to sales – over 680,000 of you have it in your music library.

5: Daniel Merriweather – Red

The Australian singer who shot to fame as vocalist on Mark Ronson’s version of Smiths’ track Stop Me gets his most successful solo chart peak with this emotive ballad that’s a favourite of auditionees for TV talent contests. Red was a non-mover this week in 2009 and would go no further – it would chart again in 2013 but there have been no fresh hits for Daniel since. Red has shifted over 500,000 copies (and is brilliant).

This time last year…

Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell were still hey-hey-heying their way round the throne room at the top of the Official Singles Chart, with Blurred Lines enjoying a third week at Number 1. Interesting fact: four songs out of the Top 5 this time last year would go on to be million sellers. Check them out now.
