Kiesza scores a massive selling hit as her debut single, Hideaway, goes straight in at Number 1.

Kiesza has shot straight to the top of the Official Singles Chart with her debut release, Hideaway.

The Canadian singer/songwriter has knocked last week’s chart-topper, Nobody To Love by Sigma (Number 2 today), off the summit to claim her first ever UK Number 1.

“Being Number 1 is the most amazing feeling ever,” Kiesza told OfficialCharts.com. “I just want to say thank you to everybody who’s supported it. I never expected this at all when I created Hideaway; it’s amazing to see people come out of the woodwork and fall in love with it, so thank you!”

The 25-year-old, who is also a classically trained ballerina, first realised she wanted a career in music while working as a code breaker for the Royal Canadian Navy.

“Music was always a part of my life, but it was more of a hobby,” she explains. “When I started sailing on large vessels, people would bring instruments onto the ship and start jamming, and that led me to start song writing. That was the first time that I realised I had a natural instinct for it, and it just led me down this whole musical road that I’m on.”

Kiesza‘s change of career seems to be paying off as she trades sails for sales: more than 136,000 copies of Hideaway have been purchased in the UK over the last seven days. The track is now the third fastest selling single of 2014 so far, sitting behind Clean Bandit’s debut chart-topper Rather Be FT Jess Glynne (163,000 week one) and Pitbull’s former Number 1, Timber FT Ke$ha (139,000 copies).

Meanwhile, London-based DJ and producer Shift K3y also claims his first Top 10 hit today with deep house anthem, Touch (Number 3). John Legend’s All Of Me holds firm at Number 4, while Aloe Blacc’s recent chart-topper, The Man, drops two places to Number 5.

New Entries and High Climbers

Elyar Fox narrowly misses out on a Top 10 placing for the follow-up to his January Top 5 hit Do It All Over Again. The London teenager’s new track, A Billion Girls, debuts at Number 11 on today’s Official Singles Chart.

Fast rising grime star, Meridian Dan, enters at Number 13, with German Whip FT Big H and JME, while Dutch DJ’s Showtek and Justin Prime enter at 29 with Cannonball (Earthquake) FT Matthew Koma.

DJ Snake and Lil Jon complete this week’s Top 40 new entries. The duo’s track, Turn Down For What, surges 32 places to Number 38 today.
