Ding! Ding! This week’s Official Chart battle kicks off here!

In the blue corner…. pop poster boy Justin Bieber enters the ring this week with new single Boyfriend. The first track taken from Bieber’s forthcoming third studio album Believe, Boyfriend is a slight departure from his usual sound. Written and produced by Mike Posner and Mason Levy, the track has already been compared to the likes of Justin Timberlake.

Silhouetted Michael Jackson-inspired teaser clips for the upcoming Boyfriend promo video have begun appearing online this week keeping Beliebers everywhere in anticipation of its full unveiling. Boyfriend starts the week at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart Update.

Over in the pink corner…last weekend’s surprise chart topper and fellow Canadian newcomer Carly Rae Jepsen currently leads the field in the Official Singles Chart race with the summery, feel-good Call Me Maybe. The former Canadian Idol contestant came out of nowhere to land a debut Number 1 on Sunday, and also became the second fastest selling single of 2012 to date, with a week 1 opening sale of nearly 107,000 copies.

Call Me Maybe became an internet phenomenon last month when Justin Bieber, Selina Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and Big Time Rush recorded their own spoof video and uploaded it to YouTube. It was also Justin Bieber who first tweeted his appreciation of Carly Rae Jepsen, much in the same way as Usher was an early champion of Bieber.

Speaking about Bieber’s support, Carly recently commented "They say it's called paying it forward since Usher signed Bieber and then he signed me, so I'm gonna hope that I have the opportunity. That'd be pretty rad.”

The final bell will ring on the Official Chart this Sunday at 7pm. Be sure to log on to OfficialCharts.com to see who emerges victorious.

New entries and high climbers

R’n’B star Usher is back with new single Climax (3), while Sway is on course to enter at Number 7 this weekend with new track Level Up. Meanwhile Breathe Carolina and Fun FT Janelle Monae all look set for Top 40 hits with Blackout (23), and We Are Young (36), respectively.

This week’s highest climber comes courtesy of Together In Electric Dreams. Featured as the soundtrack to the latest EDF Energy TV ad campaign, the Phil Oakey/Giorgio Moroder classic leaps a massive 80 places today to Number 38.
