ARETHA FRANKLIN

Tennessee-born Aretha Franklin emerged from her gospel roots to record the seminal soul album I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You for Atlantic Records in 1967 and establish herself as the undisputed "Queen of Soul". RESPECT became Aretha's UK breakthrough hit that year, but it would be a further 20 years before she scored her first and only UK Number 1 single - teaming up with George Michael on the chart-topping I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me). Aretha Franklin sadly passed away in 2018. (Image: Rex)
