Yes but who cares ? she has a decades lasting career
not a fan however interesting that she had us hot 100 top 10 hits from 1983-2008

on the other hand lady gaga flopped with ART POP an album that came out after 4,5 years after her first album

Modern music really is absolutely awful, just listened to the top 10, what the happened to melodies and real music. BBC radio 1 should be ashamed playing this , and I'm in their age band!

But didn't our parents say the same thing when we were young? Young people should enjoy the music of their era and generation. Let's not be old, bitter and miserable.

Let Nature Sing, better than all of the top 40 put together, sometimes the sounds of nature is all you need, and not enough people appreciate it.

Well, not a bad week.

Glad to see Stormzy hit number 1 with "Vossi Bop". Wish other UK rappers would learn a thing or two from this dude.

Taylor Swift's new track had "ME" going all week. Not her best work with all those emphasis on "ME" but still awesome.

Nothing much to say about "Let nature sing" by The RSPB. It's for a good cause but just like every other charity song, I won't be surprised if it takes a massive drop next week.

"Don't worry bout me" by Zara Larsson isn't so bad. Wondering why it took so long to hit the chart though. Anyways, it's one my least favourite track from her and would most likely drop before ACR hits.

Ellie Goulding's being releasing some good songs lately but they don't perform well on the charts. "Sixteen" is one of those good tracks and should even be a Top 20 by now. Really wish people will give her more streams. 🤕

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

- ‘Vossi Bop’ becomes Stormzy’s first ever #1 single in the country! The song racked up 12.7 million streams over the past week, which is the biggest opening week ever for streams by a rapper & the fifth biggest of all-time.

- Overall, ‘Vossi Bop’s total combined sales for this week are 94,500, giving it the second biggest opening week of 2019 so far.

- ‘Me!’ by Taylor Swift ft Brendon Urie makes a massive debut at #1 on the nation’s airplay chart. I’m not aware of any other song has done this since I started these OCC reviews, although I’d imagine it hasn’t been done since at least ‘Shape Of You’.

- ‘Old Town Road’ is #1 on the YouTube chart for a third consecutive week, although it loses 2.5% of its weekly views, down to 3.63 million.

- STORMZY – VOSSI BOP (#1)
Just by name recognition, you’d think Stormzy would’ve had a #1 before this, or at least a Top 5. Anyway, while he has put out better hits, I can see the appeal to this & why it would have potential to go all the way to the top. I really wish more rappers in general would have as much confidence, flair & charisma as Stormzy does here. He seems to have a laid-back & somewhat witty flow here as well, but the lyrics are where the controversy comes in a little, particularly at him calling out politicians, particularly Boris Johnson. That said, Stormzy had always been vocal about his thoughts on the government. Overall though, yeah, I’m definitely a fan of this! I still really wish Taylor would’ve got her second #1, but at least Stormzy was able to get his first, because it’s much deserved with this. Light 8/10 from me!

- TAYLOR SWIFT FT BRENDON URIE – ME! (#3)
When I say I’ve been a Swiftie since Taylor’s debut album, that’s been for 13 years, so as you could expect, I had every expectation that this would be an immediate pop smash & that’s exactly what we got! I feel like Taylor & Brendon have a lot more chemistry than you would expect & both of them can really belt those vocals too, even if their upper range could’ve hit with a little more impact. The marching band instrumentation & the burst of life into the hook really took me by surprise. The only thing I would really criticise is that the lyrics can come across as a bit childish, particularly the “spelling is fun” part, but then again, some of the melodies & lines here are also kind of clever, particularly “you can’t spell ‘awesome’ without ‘me’”. It might not be her best lead single, but it’s definitely up there! For me, I’m thinking a light 9/10. So glad she’s back!

- THE RSPB – LET NATURE SING (#18)
Okay, fairly short review for this one, just because there’s not a lot I can say about it. There’s no lyrics nor instrumentation, just the chirps & squawks of vulnerable or endangered birds. I mean, it’s different I guess & it’s certainly for a good cause (between this & ‘Earth’, I have faith that lots of people are starting to care about this more). I don’t know though, I was expecting a choir or something similar. Anyway, some of the birds sounded relaxing, while others didn’t, although one sounded like it could’ve been alien-like which was cool. While I’m giving this a 6/10, I feel like a rating is almost meaningless for something like this, because you can’t review the sound of nature.

- ZARA LARSSON – DON’T WORRY BOUT ME (#34)
I don’t what it is, but for as much as I loved both Zara Larsson’s earlier discography & almost all of her biggest hits in this country, I’ve just struggled to get into her more recent music. Unfortunately, with this, it becomes a lot more clear as to why I’m not getting on board with her as much as I was. For a blend of both tropical dance & pop, you’d expect there to be much of a groove or interesting melody than there is here, which means it really doesn’t stick with me that much sadly. It’s a shame because the lyrics do show some potential, telling a selfish ex not to worry about her because he should be more concerned with how he’s treating others. It’s one of her more mature singles, but despite that, she doesn’t land the vocal display to pull it off anywhere near as much as I know she can. I still hope we’ll get a third studio album from her before long, but I sure hope it’s better than this. 5/10 for me!

- ELLIE GOULDING – SIXTEEN (#36)
I honestly expect Ellie Goulding’s latest single to do a lot better than they have, but with this, at least the quality is still there, although this did have to grow on me a fair bit from when I first heard it. Ellie’s always had such a powerful pop vocal, which absolutely shines over this production! Speaking of which, I’ve always said that dance music is a really good fit for her & the groovy instrumentation & the sense of a drop adds to that, even if I’m not sure I can get on board with the chopped vocals following the hooks or at the start of the song. She can also mostly capture the feel of reminiscing on good times in a relationship really well, but it just wish the drop didn’t fall a little flat for me. Still euphoric & upbeat enough to lift this to a very strong 7/10 though!

- On the albums chart, ‘Hurts 2B Human’ becomes P!NK’s third #1! It has a lead of around 22,000 combined sales over its closest competitor, including having the biggest digital sales week of 2019 so far.

- The rest pf the Top 5 is: ‘The Balance’ by Catfish & The Bottlemen (debuts at #2), ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ by Billie Eilish (1-3), ‘The Greatest Showman [Soundtrack]’ (2-4) & ‘Love & Fear’ by MARINA (debuts at #5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘If I Can’t Have You’ by Shawn Mendes, ‘Hold Me While You Wait’ by Lewis Capaldi, ‘Homicide’ by Logic & Eminem, ‘Guten Tag’ by Hardy Caprio & DigDat, ‘New York City’ by Kylie Minogue, ‘M.E.N II’ by Bugzy Malone & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good bank holiday weekend. :)

"Vossi Bop" has surprisingly had streams from Finland as well! In Spotify it has been in the upper-lower 100s for days. Today it re-entered at #168 with over 6000 streams. Surprising because as country music has minimal influence here, I'd say British Grime fits into that category as well.

Hey Piran! I really like seeing 'Vossi Bop' at #1, even if it isn't my favourite of Stormzy's tracks I still really like it, and I also really like that 'Old Town Road' is able to stay at #2. I don't mind seeing 'ME!' at #3 either, though I am very surprised that it went from being just a few hundred sales behind 'Vossi Bop' in the midweek chart to being just under 30,000 sales behind on the final chart. Seeing 'Location' rebound for an 6th week in the Top 10 is great as well, though Dave will need to put out a video very soon if he wants to save it from ACR.
As for the new debuts, I'm definitely a fan of 'Vossi Bop', so I'd probably give it a light-solid 8/10 for now, while 'ME!' would actually be my least favourite of the debuts, though I don't hate it by any means. It'd be a light 6/10 for me, which is a massive improvement from my 2/10 for 'Look What You Made Me Do'. I'm glad to see 'Let Nature Sing' in the charts, though, as you said, there's not really much point in giving it a rating. 'Don't Worry Bout Me' is where we differ the most, as I'd give it a strong 8/10 and it's been a Top 10 hit on my charts! 'Sixteen' would be a light 7/10 for me, though I am definitely a much bigger fan of Ellie's track 'Hollow Crown' from 'For The Throne'.
I've not heard either of the Top 2 debuts on the album chart this week, so I can't really comment, but there's something else happening on there that really highlights one of my issues with the chart. Just like with 'Black Panther: The Album' last year, 'For The Throne' has been relegated to the Compilations Chart while 'The Greatest Showman' is currently enjoying its 69th week inside the Top 5. 'For The Throne' is literally credited to "Game of Thrones" as well, while 'The Greatest Showman' is credited to "Various Artists", so if anything they should swap charts.
Next week looks to be a pretty big week in terms of new debuts: 'Hold Me While You Wait' seems to be heading for the Top 5, while 'If I Can't Have You' and 'Homicide' both seem to be heading for the Top 20, with the former doing better on iTunes and Apple Music and the latter doing better on Spotify. 'Guten Tag' also looks like it's heading for the Top 30. Not3s' 'Wanting' also may climb those 2 places to reach the Top 40. Right at the top, though, Stormzy looks pretty safe with 'Vossi Bop' reaching its highest daily streams yet of 826k on Spotify on Friday, enough for it to surpass the combined streams of 'Old Town Road' for the 5th consecutive day, though that streak was broken on Saturday's chart with both 'Old Town Road' versions gaining and 'Vossi Bop' dropping.

1

Hey Gameskiller! :)
Yeah, it wasn't really much of a surprise that 'Vossi Bop' remained at #1 throughout the entire week. It seemed like it was always going to be #1 on streaming, but unlike most other debuts, the song gradually increased on downloads to make it #3 on the sales chart.
Regarding 'Me!', I think it's weakest metric was streaming, although it still came it at #4 there. The one place it was dominant on was YouTube, making an unsurprisingly big debut of 4.91 million views there! Either way, while you don't love the song, I'm pleased that you think it's at least a lot better than her last lead single. Hopefully you'll like TS7 more than 'Reputation' as whole too, since many are calling the latter her worst album of hers (it's actually my second least favourite from her, but that's not saying much, because I still think it's really good).
Is 'Location' even an official single? I think it's only 'Streatham' that has a video since 'Psychodrama' came out, but neither than nor 'Disaster' appear to have had much longevity.
Yeah, 'Guten Tag' is the only one I missed really. That's the thing with my segment on Top 40 predictions; I can only go by Apple Music or iTunes, or maybe the "New Releases" page on the OCC website, since Spotify always seems to be day or two behind updating their daily charts, same for the YouTube weekly charts.
I think it'll be a much closer race for #1 next week between 'Vossi Bop' & 'Old Town Road', but I could see the former getting a second week at #1 on Friday, maybe with a lead of just a few thousand combined sales though. 'Hold Me While You Wait' looks like it'll be Top 5 like you said & I'm not so sure about 'Me!', but that'll at least absolutely remain in the Top 10.

avatar

Piran

2

Thanks Dami! :)
We'll have to see about Kylie hitting the Top 40 for me to fully review 'New York City' (I still haven't heard the song yet) because while sales are decent, streaming never seems to be on her side, nor for many older artists for that matter.

avatar

Piran

1

It'd be cool to see a grime artist get big on an international level, but I think Skepta is the only one to do that so far & even then, he's been more of a featured artist on those kind of hits.
You never know, since 'Despacito', Latin songs have been bigger smashes in countries that don't speak Spanish, so maybe 'Old Town Road' & potentially 'Vossi Bop' could pave the way for more grime & country success in Finland respectively like you said! ;)

avatar

Foxes

0

Yeah, it's pretty unsurprising that 'Vossi Bop' got #1 given how well it did on all platforms. Even on sales and YouTube, where 'ME!' did better, 'Vossi Bop' wasn't far behind at all. It was #3 on sales like you mentioned, and it was only around 10% behind on YouTube as well.
I actually didn't mind 'reputation'. 'Look What You Made Me Do' was my least favourite track on the album and, while I didn't like all of the others either, there are still tracks like 'So It Goes...', 'Call It What You Want' and '...Ready For It?' which I'd give an 8/10, and 'Dancing With Our Hands Tied', 'I Did Something Bad' and 'End Game' which I'd give a 9/10.
I don't think 'Location' is an official single, though it definitely should be given that it's Dave's 2nd most successful track. I wonder what the last example was of an album track doing this well for an extended period of time like 'Location', though. Off the top of my head I can think of 'Lucky You' from 'Kamikaze', which only spent 3 weeks in the Top 10 and was promoted to a single shortly after release, and 'Galway Girl', which was also promoted to a single shortly after release.
Yeah, I think it'll be closer between 'Vossi Bop' and 'Old Town Road' next week, but I still think that 'Vossi Bop' can hold onto #1 for another week. 'ME!' is currently Top 10 on all 4 major services, so it'll definitely be there next week, and 'If I Can't Have You' & 'Homicide' will both probably come close to the Top 10 but not quite make it. The former is #2 on iTunes, but #12 on Apple Music and #19 on Spotify, while the latter is #9 on Spotify, but #18 on iTunes and #38 on Apple Music.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, Stormzy was only 500k views behind Taylor in her opening week! Honestly, if you'd have told me that would've been the case even a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have believed you. I think both of their next albums are going to #1 though, unless they somehow release on the same day.
Oh fair enough, I completely forgot that you thought 'Reputation' was decent, but I do remember us talking about how much we loved 'End Game' & 'Dancing With Our Hands Tied' actually! What is your favourite album from Taylor then? :)

avatar

Andr Krawutk

0

forget it
do you have an obsession with 51year old singers?

avatar

Damián

2

Yep, that's true. Sadly streaming winning over sales has destroyed veteran artists to hit top 40 again

avatar

Foxes

1

It'd actually be quite interesting if Stormzy and Taylor were to release albums on the same day. Stormzy would of course do better on streams (and Taylor may not even release on streaming services to begin with), but Taylor would do better on sales. 'reputation' got 84,000 in its opening week, while 'Gang Signs & Prayer' got 69,000, but as 'Vossi Bop' shows Stormzy is bigger now than ever before. I think it'd be a really close race for the #1 album.
I've only listened to Taylor's 3 most recent albums in full, but out of those 3 I'd say my order goes: 'Red', 'reputation', '1989', from best to worst. I'd actually give all 3 albums a 7/10, with 'Red' closer to an 8 and '1989' closer to a 6. 'I Knew You Were Trouble' was my favourite of her songs until 'End Game', and 'Everything Has Changed' was 2nd.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I agree with your thoughts on if they did release their albums on the same day. No doubt Taylor would debut at #1 in almost every other country though, haha!
For me, 'Red' would probably be a light 8/10, '1989' would be a strong 7/10 & 'Reputation' would be a light 7/10. Of course, her country music is what I really love, with 'Fearless' getting a 10/10 score when I recently reviewed it on the Billboard discussion forum. :)
I thought you'd definitely like both 'Everything Has Changed' & 'End Game' given the Ed Sheeran feature. I still can't believe the latter never made the Top 40 over here!

avatar

Foxes

1

Yeah, Stormzy doesn't have much of a presence outside of the UK so far, though hopefully he can break out at some point and be one of the first artists to bring UK hip-hop outside of the UK.
Speaking of Ed, have you heard the rumours that him & Bieber are releasing new music on the 10th? If that is true, that track will almost certainly be #1 in 2 weeks' time, and it'd be the 2nd time Ed replaced Stormzy at #1 if 'Vossi Bop' holds on next week. First was with 'Gang Signs & Prayer' and '÷'.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, he's doing alright in Ireland & he's getting a small number of Spotify streams elsewhere in Europe, but there aren't many grime artists who are big outside of the UK other than maybe Skepta as a featured artist.
I do agree that a JB & Ed Sheeran collaboration would probably debut at #1 if one did come out in five days! I wonder if it'll be 'Love Yourself: Part 2'? ;)
Speaking of which, it is just me, or should 'Earth' be a lot bigger than it is? I mean, it's essentially a charity song (& a comedy song), but my other main point about it is that it has so many big local & global artists on it, including Ed & JB, but also Ariana & a countless number of others!

avatar

Piran

0

No. How does saying an artist is going to do well on the sales chart & was a contender to maybe hit the Top 40 at the time mean I have an obsession with them? I just said I haven't even heard the song yet...

avatar

Piran

0

Yeah, Eminem is the only who's older than 40 that appears to be having consistently huge success on both the singles & the albums chart.

avatar

Foxes

1

I definitely wouldn't mind a 'Love Yourself: Part 2', though I somehow doubt that's what it would be!
I guess not too many people are listening to 'Earth' because they don't know it's got so many huge artists on it, since none of them are directly credited. Plus, no artist really has a big role, and it's not the best song anyway. Though I would've expected it to do better simply due to the fact that it's a charity song.

avatar

Piran

1

Isn't Ed's next album meant to be a lot more experimental & personal anyway? It'll still easily debut at #1 & probably outperform the rest of the Top 10 combined in its opening week. I'd imagine it'd be in the multiple hundreds of thousands, but nothing we saw from '÷' in the week after that came out.
That's true about 'Earth'. I like the song a lot more than you do as you know, but I feel like Lil Dicky definitely isn't a generally recognisable name yet.

avatar

Foxes

1

I remember reading last year that he wanted to release a grime-influenced EP along the lines of 'No. 5 Collaborations Project' this year, and then his next album next year, though I don't know how accurate that'll turn out to be. But his next album is meant to be a more acoustic record, so I definitely don't think it'll do as well as '÷'. Probably something closer to 'x', especially since Ed himself has said that he does not want this album to be a massive commercial success and beat '÷'.

avatar

Piran

1

'÷' has a lot of records that'll probably never be beaten in the UK charts, as in, ever. I don't know if the OCC will scrap the three songs maximum rule, but even they did, would any artist in the foreseeable future be able to get all ten songs in the Top 10? Ed was only one way from doing that!
Also, thanks to ACR, it makes it almost impossible for songs to spend more than 10 weeks at #1, let alone beat Bryan Adams' record. The only way that could happen if it the song was a real slow burner & had gradual increases over the space for a few months, which face it, is very unlikely.

avatar

Foxes

1

I highly doubt that any artist would manage to get 9/10 in the Top 10 ever again, especially for 2 consecutive weeks, even if OCC did allow artists to chart all of their songs again. The only artists that may have a chance of doing it would be Ed himself if he releases another huge commercial album, or Drake if he took a break from music for a couple years and then returned with a hugely successful album, and even then it's extremely unlikely.
Ed also still holds streaming records for both single and album over 2 years after he set them, and with the massive growth of the streaming market that's insane. 'Shape of You's 14.2m audio streams in week 1 has never been passed, though a few songs have managed to get higher when video streams are included (they weren't for 'Shape of You'), and '÷'s 79k streaming sales in week 1 have also never been passed.
Yeah, the only way a song could beat Bryan Adams' record is if it was a really slow burner, or if it was so massively successful that it could remain at #1 even with its streams halved after 10 weeks ('Despacito' remains the only track to ever do that, shortly after the rule was introduced for 1 week).

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I remember 'Despacito' was one of the first cases where ACR prevented it from being at the top. I recall a lot of chart-watchers, including myself, being very annoyed by the fact that it was the biggest song on both all metrics, yet 'Wild Thoughts' was the #1 song of the week. I still massively disagree with it, but I doubt the OCC are going to change it back anytime soon.
I think 'Thinking Out Loud' set a longevity record too. It was either most non-consecutive weeks in the Top 75, or second most weeks in the Top 100, or maybe even both. 'Perfect' should come to both of those too, but probably not pass it. I feel like either of those are played at literally every wedding or anniversary, which is probably why they've never gone away.
Even in 'Despacito's case, it still needed a remix to make it beyond 10 weeks! As we've seen, it's certainly possible for a song to have double the number of streams than the #2 song on its 10th week, but sales are a completely different matter & a lot less likely to happen!

avatar

Foxes

1

'Thinking Out Loud' has the longest consecutive run in the Top 100 I believe, with 95 weeks. It also has the longest consecutive run in the Top 40 with 54 weeks, and it had the longest climb to #1, reaching #1 on its 19th week. 'Shape of You' managed 94 consecutive weeks in the Top 100, and if not for ACR it would've certainly gone well beyond 'Thinking Out Loud's 95 weeks. It also spent 39 consecutive weeks in the Top 40, and most likely would've gotten 60+ if not for ACR, since the 1st time it dropped below #60 was on its 68th week. 'Perfect' "only" managed 67 consecutive weeks in the Top 100 and 20 in the Top 40.

avatar

Piran

1

Regarding 'Perfect', I actually counted 30 consecutive weeks inside the Top 40 for that.
It turns out it might've actually been placed on ACR, took back off it, then put back on ACR again; it dropped out of the Top 100 entirely from #50 on the 06/07/2017 dated chart, then it fell 7-18 on the 08/02/2018 one, which is a considerable drop compared to the losses it took before & after that date.
I think 'Shape Of You' & maybe even 'Despacito' might still be in, or near, the Top 100 today if ACR didn't exist, while 'Mr Brightside' would probably be considerably higher than both of them (it was #45 In the summer of 2017 with it, so imagine where it would be without it!). 'Mr Brightside' is a really weird one, given it's initial chart run was: 10-26-38-60-off, but with a total of six weeks in the Top 40, it has a mammoth 207 inside the Top 100! More proof that chart positions means nothing regarding a song's success.

Have you thought about doing a review under the Sales Chart. I think you'd find it a lot more interesting as there's a bigger variation of music styles in there. How often do you find a rock band in this chart. Very few

Probably the last review I’ll do tonight (as well as the only one where I was active in the community), but here we go. :)

The race for Number 1 this week was so entertaining to keep up with. I was heavily rooting for Old Town Road to have another week, but Vossi Bop also made me realise how good the UK rap scene was/is.

Speaking of Vossi Bop, that song is so amazing. Definitely my go to summer song (for some reason) behind Slide.

Me! on the other hand, was not very good. Brandon Urie is absolutely terrible without his band, and how could we forget about the infamous spelling line.

At least it’s better than what we got from her next, also known as the worst song ever made. :|

Old Town Road being so popular was weird (especially the two weeks before this one), I acknowledge that it’s a terrible song, but I love it because of how stupid it is and also kind of nostalgia (yes, already).

At the very least, it knocked off the terrible Someone You Loved, and blocked off Me!.

I agree with you on all of the other new entries though, and it reminds me
how annoying Sixteen flopping was.

The only thing I dislike about your review is that it reminded me of Hom*i*de (censored so that nobody else has to go through remembering Logic) exists, but that’s not your fault.

TOP 10 RANKINGS:

1: Vossi Bop (10/10)

Nice to see you checking out my older reviews! :D

I'm going to go back through a few throwback charts over the next few days & review those in my spare time, before I bring back my actual weekly chart reviews, haha.

I think 'Me!' is certainly one of Taylor's weakest singles to date, but it's still overhated in my opinion! Honestly, the song that she went to #1 with ('Look What You Made Me Do') is probably even worse. 'Someone You Loved' soured on many people here fast too!

This Top 10 did, however, feature my favourite song of 2019! That being 'SOS'.

Thanks for the comment!
