Terrible all round, just dreadful. But at least the Ginger Hobbit isn't hogging the entire top 20 like he did last time.

Not even a top 100 entry for the new Kylie single Kiss Of Life, featuring Jessie Ware. The song and the vid are fire but it seems Kylie won't have a top 40 anymore 😔

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

1

i’m more sad because jessie ware hasn’t had a top 40 hit in years. even though what’s your pleasure was a top 3 album, none of the singles from it became hits, and that disappointed me because that album is one of the best pure pop albums i’ve heard in a long time. and like you said, it definitely seems like kylie is past her prime 😔

avatar

Damián

1

Absolutely agree with u buddy!! WYP is one of the finest pop albums in decades its production is amazing, awesome and of course it deserved to be #1 album and all of the singles should've been top 40, as well as Kylie's one.
I get so mad due to ageism, these incredible artists are not having hit singles anymore

The Halloween related songs should have hit the charts last friday, not 5 days after the event has come and gone. Streaming has a lot to answer for. This happened almost a year ago when Wham Last Christmas made it to number 1 for the first time but Christmas had already past. Its all pretty messed up really.

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

2

it’s not entirely because of streaming on wrong days. halloween fell on sunday, which is during the tracking week for the charts. people would go out of their way to constantly stream thriller on that night and when november came, streams for it crashed. so in short, halloween songs are only here because of sunday’s tracking. hope that answers your question!

DK

Dave Knight

0

I see what you mean. I cant help but think this wouldn't happen when the physical format reigned.
People would have bought a halloween related single at least a week before the event. Its the same with Christmas how ironic was it when Wham's Last Christmas made it to number 1 for the first time since 1984 when it originally came out, but it happened on New years day. Again this wouldn't have happened in a physical age because people who buy Christmas records wouldn't have bought it after Christmas has gone. Same with Halloween people as you said streamed the out of them on the night hence the delay in chart entry. But in a physical world people would have bought them in advance so they got the records to play on the night, so the sales would have already done their job a week before Halloween. Its simple when you think about it.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

Without streaming Wham would never have made No.1 though also Dave

avatar

🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜

1

exactly and christmas day fell during the tracking week so 5 million people went out of their way to stream last christmas and aiwfciy that day.

also, i dunno if anyone else other than me and frank has, but i’ve started streaming them now 😂

DK

Dave Knight

1

Well that maybe true, but can anyone see my point? Its embarresing in my mind for this to be happening. I been following the charts for as long as I remember, but would nevee have happened in a physical sales era.
Everyone would have geared up and bought Christmas singles weeks in advance usually.
A Christmas number 1 really was a Christmas number 1.
I actually used to like the weeks building up to Christmas to see what singles were coming out because in those days artists released songs that sounded a bit Christmasey even if it wasent an all out Christmas song.
Slades My oh my for example doesn't have Christmas mentioned in the song at all, yet it entered the charts in November and gradually worked its way up to number 2 by Christmas day but The Flying Pickets just won the race with Only You.
You wont see battles like that anymore which is sad in my eyes.
Because with streaming people use streaming sites rather than buy proper records, so what they listen to on Spotify reflects on what the charts look like the Friday after, but when its event type songs they enter the charts too late because people have only just listened to them.
Whereas if it was physical sales you'd have to be buying them before hand.
Surely it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work this out.
But sadly this has what has happened to our beloved music industry. Its gone down the pan in my eyes.
I could write a book on streaming and the negative imact its had on the industry and charts.
Just look at how stagnant it is.

DK

Dave Knight

1

But thats just my point, the very fact people are using streaming sites instead of buying them is why we get the songs enter the charts after the event which to me is embarrassing and why streaming shouldn't be allowed to affect the charts in my opinion..
The only way to make streaming work along side the charts more affectively would be to update the charts every day, so if there is a sudden uptake on a song, we could literally see it on the charts the very next day or even same day, to me its the only fair way to include streaming on the charts.
That way you would not have Halloween songs enter the charts 5 days too late, or indeed Christmas songs.
Im pretty certain in this digital age the chart company could implement this.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

1

😂 I've not started streaming them yet. There are quite a few new ones out this year, hoping to get a listen to them and see if there could be any future classics among them!

AR

0

It would and did happen in the days of vinyl.
Mud ' Lonely This Christmas ' for example was still being bought well after Christmas and wasn't knocked off the number 1 position until the 18 January.

avatar

Traffic Light Review:
Very Bad:
1) OUT OUT will be going on ACR next week thanks to Obsessed With You climbing up to 8 since the update. Need I say more?

🔴 Negative:
1) Cold Heart down to 5!
2) Bad Habits returns off ACR. This needs to leave.
3) Another D Block Europe song? I like Ferrari Horses from them but their others are pretty bad, this one included.
4) How Will I Know dropped out
5) Head & Heart cant decide whether it wants to go up or go down.
6) My Heart Goes robbed of the Top 10, again.

🍊 Mixed (my mum has an android, dont ask):
1) Coming For You. It's okay but the sample is not put to use that well imo.

💚 Positive:
1) Goodbye reached a new peak
2) I Wish debuting
3) Easy on Me gets a 3rd week at number 1
4) Meet Me At Our Spot top 10
5) Life Goes On out of the top 40
6) Better Days climbing into the top 40
7) Dance Monkey has dropped out AGAIN
8) Thriller is back! I haven't appreciated this song as much as it should be, it's really good.

Piran, hello!! long time no talk!! I keep on reading you,m but answering is my issue for now...about the song, ‘Coming For You’...to what version of "Don’t Play" do you refer? just being curious, and pondering your words...your paragraph looks a lot charged with anger for an offensive reason to Avicci´s memory.....sorry, Piran...I already followed you through the paragraph and heard the songs....I don´t know what you might think, but I totally agree with you....now I understand your thoughts and feelings....I am with you!! 😔💔

Coolocelot101... My week was heavy thou to partial exams, but musically was great, I love those new songs by ES, and still enjoying "Easy on me" and "Dopamine", along with "Somebody's watching me".... I was pondering in why Piran felt that way with the interpolation of Avicci's "Coming for you" and after listening to the different versions I came to understand Piran's point of view... I think is a matter of admiration and respect to a memory... Just that.... How do you see this coming new week?

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (05/11/2021 – 11/11/2021)

🤬 (Really Negative)

1) RANT ALERT: ‘Coming For You’ broke into the chart throughout the tracking week! Yeah, for as much as some things about the chart have been too good for the positive section of my reviews since I brought them back, I unfortunately need to bring in a segment that’s too bad to even put among this week’s negatives. To describe why I detest this song as much as I do, I think it’s best for me to mention in advance that the song it samples, ‘The Nights’ by Avicii, is my favourite song from one of the most inspirational DJs of all-time! Not only does it have empowering vocals, but it’s also got groovy verses, an uplifting drop & motivational lyrics that got me through a time that was absolute in my personal life; it’s a straight 10/10, no question! With this, I’m just shocked that SwitchOTR & A1 x J1 even got the greenlight to use Avicii’s sample on this. For one, the vocals on the hook are pitched way too high to the point where it sounds like somebody on helium, but outside of that, A1 x J1’s flow sounds so lazy, blocky & off-beat, also not helping by the fact that the lyrics are about going out to literally murder your haters & competition, when the whole idea of the original recording was a father inspiring his child to go out & make the most of life! The interpolation is just outright offensive to me & even when they’re not ripping that off, it’s forgettable, bland & completely one-dimensional! I was disappointed when Central Cee didn’t give PinkPantheress a credited feature on ‘Just For Me’, sure, but at least ‘Obsessed With You’ somewhat intrigues the listener into the song it plucks its ideas from me. Now, I don’t think for one minute either artist in question here intended to degrade Avicii by putting this out for one minute, but unfortunately, this is also a song neither him nor his fans would like to hear, myself included! I might’ve shocked or even angered some of you earlier this year when I said that ‘Don’t Play’ was the worst song to be released this year, but honestly, it might now have serious competition, because this is beyond tragic. Skip this trash!

🔴 (Negative)

1) ‘Bad Habits’ got an ACR reset! I know I’m not as fed up with Ed as much as most of this forum are, but I’d have at least have liked to see some more album tracks here rather than overplayed hits of his that have been out since June (again, I don't think this is precisely a bad song, I'm just tired of it).

2) ‘My Heart Goes [La Di Da]’ missed the Top 10 yet again! Judging by how fast it’s stalled out & the number of weeks that it’s been on the chart for, I’m expecting a serious knock for this soon sadly.

3) ‘No Competition’ among the new entries! Yeah, not really got a lot to say about this one, given it’s the same generic formula we’ve seen D-Block Europe already use when they first hit the UK charts. The biggest is, as it usually It from this collective, way too much autotune on Young Adz’s vocals, which isn’t a good sign when he aims for an upper register & has most of the song to himself! Sure, the skittering drill beat has a bit of a chilled tone to it & Dirtbike LB can at least ride his flow better, but the best D-Block Europe songs are those are a lot more melodic like ‘UFO’ or ‘Ferrari Horses’ & I can unfortunately say that this while this is far from their worst thanks to one half of the group putting on a passable permission, this is definitely not up there with the two aforementioned hits. In other words, it’ll be forgotten about in record time!

4) ‘Tell It To My Heart’ is way lower than I hoped it would’ve been! Yeah, it’s the same MEDUZA that we’re all used to hearing, but man, Hozier’s vocals stand out incredibly here. He’s criminally underrated!

🟠 (Mixed)

1) ‘Overpass Graffiti’ is the highest debut of the week! Honestly, I feel like I’m just repeating myself when it comes to reviewing Ed Sheeran songs at this point, because I could nearly copy my commentary on ‘Bad Habits’ or ‘Shivers’, paste it right here, change a few words & most of the points would still apply for this album track which has already been confirmed as the next commercial single, even getting an official video for it. I will say that this song does at least feel a bit more dynamic & less acoustic than most of the other tracks on ‘=’ & I also think that there’s better mixing here too, especially in some of the layering of the instrumentation! That being said, for as much passion as I can hear coming from Ed here, I’m not sure his vocals hit the level of brightness that he was hoping for, especially when the whole song are about him getting over a previous break-up, but understanding that the ex in question will always be a part of his life & it’s shaped who he is as a person to this day. I’m not sure if I entirely agree with comparing a past relationship to drawings often in rough places & usually with explicit content either, also ‘Stop The Rain’ & ‘2Step’ both would’ve blown this out of the park in terms of quality, but it’s still okay, I guess! It probably won’t overstay it’s welcome in the charts in the same way that this past two singles have & are still doing to the point of boredom, so yeah, I’m fine with it being here.

2) ‘Ghost’ entered the Top 40! Despite the name, this actually isn’t here because of Halloween. It’s actually the sixth single that Justin’s pushing from ‘Justice’, specifically the deluxe version of it! What amazed me here is how much is going on in it. Sure, JB’s delivery about the pain of moving on from a loved one is okay, but I think his emotion is highlighted a lot more in the production! The drum & bass rollicking makes this a lot more up-tempo than you would otherwise expect, while the EDM-heavy synths & programmed drums only add to the intensity of it. That being said, were either of those features entirely necessary? Sure, we know from ‘Purpose’ that JB should continue to make more hits like this, but I think in the case of ‘Ghost’, it would be better if he just kept the folky acoustic guitar, since the content is a lot more suited towards an acoustic sound! Overall, it’s not bad, but I can see a lot of places where this could’ve sounded much better.

3) ‘Happier Than Ever’ hitting ACR! It’s one of my favourite Billie songs, so it’s sad to see it go, but it had a better chart run than I think anybody expected.

4) The three songs per artist rule! Yeah, I’m normally really against this, but I don’t mind seeing it as much for albums on this scale, other the chart probably would all be about one name who I think has been mentioned enough here, haha.

5) ‘=’ inevitably debuted at #1 on the albums chart with the biggest opening week of the year so far (until three weeks from now at least!). There were about four tracks from it that I added to my weekly playlist, but yeah, for the most part, too many of the tracks sound similar to each other on this. As expected, it’s my least favourite album of Ed’s to date!

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Easy On Me’ held onto #1 despite the figures all week saying that it would fall today! It’s a lot more vulnerable than I would’ve expected on its third week in the chart, but at least it matched ‘Hello’s run at the top.

2) ‘Meet Me At Our Spot’ finally entered the Top 10! I’m so happy to see the momentum continuing for this.

3) Some Halloween songs held up way better than I was expecting! Not only did it allow some classic artists including MJ to return to the chart, but last weekend was probably one of the best Halloweens I had, so it’s awesome to see the biggest chart impact that’s on the annual tradition too.

4) ‘I Wish’ debuted in a decently high position! As far as the new dance hits go this week, there seems to be a trend of the guest singers outshining the producers. The production is very much standard Joel Corry with the thumping beat & sleek piano keys that shower the hook, but honestly, Mabel is the real star of the show here! Her bombastic vocals remind me of a voice that could be on a club hit from the 90’s, while the whistling that accompanies it lifts the mood even further! Funnily enough though, the content actually comes the point of view of heartbreak, where you regret leaving an ex & you try effortlessly to show them that you’ve changed your mind, allowing you to become a new person. I’m not sure I can put this among his best hits given how many ideas he’s just taken from songs he’s charted with over the past three years, but Mabel sounds more confident with every song she puts out & she really elevates this! Good song overall.

5) ‘Better Days’ climbed into the Top 40 this week, but it’s even higher than predicted in the updates predicted it over the past few weeks! Now, you might remember NEIKED from ‘$exual’ a few years back, which was admittedly a guilty pleasure of mine, but I have absolutely no shame in saying that I absolutely love this. The glittery synthesisers, the pulsing beats & the radiant horns are all good production features to add to a bop that also has a very optimistic message behind it! I do feel that Mae Muller’s singing can feel a little too saccharine at places, especially on the pre-chorus & the hook does fall a little flat for me, but she absolutely shines in the verses & Polo G is slowly becoming one of my favourite rappers in the mainstream right now. Seriously, he can fit so many grooves so well that it’s actually making me more curious to check out more of his solo music! We might be in winter now, but this is the energy that we need in the charts going forward. Hopefully this is just the beginning for it!

6) ‘Life Goes On’ dropped out of the Top 40! I’m definitely not going to miss seeing this so high up in the charts.

I think for me personally, it’s in the lyrics.

‘The Nights’ was all about going out & seizing every opportunity in life, because you only get to live it once, while ‘Coming For You’ has a very different meaning, since a lot of the content seems to reference hunting & even shooting rivals!

I personally don’t believe Avicii would’ve liked hearing that if he was still alive. :/

More than 10 years now, but yeah, it’s mad how fast the time’s gone! :O

She was still a teenager back then 🤔

avatar

Piran

2

I think she was only nine years old when she released it! :O

K

Kiesling

3

Really ?? 😳

avatar

Piran

2

Yeah, apparently she was born on October 31, 2000. :)

K

Kiesling

3

Wow. She just turned 21 :O

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, she’s even younger than me! :O

K

Kiesling

2

She's older than me 😂😂

avatar

Piran

1

I don’t think this is going to be her last Top 10 hit either. :)

K

Kiesling

2

I agree because she's taking up alternative in a time that it's gradually becoming more popular

Another underrated artist I’ve been getting into a lot lately is Sam Fender. :)

K

Kiesling

2

He's been blowing up on the charts lately, might check his songs out

avatar

Piran

1

I'm thinking of reviewing his latest album too! 'Spit Of You' absolutely deserves to go Top 40 soon, especially with all the airplay it's been getting from Radio 1. :)

K

Kiesling

2

How many songs in the album ??

avatar

Piran

1

11 tracks on the standard edition, but an additional five on the deluxe version. :)

Hey everyone! Did you all have a nice week? :)

Enjoy the fireworks tonight! 🎆

avatar

⁉️

3

Yeah, I had an alright week. :)

Bit surprised they celebrate November 5th in England, considering the reason it started was someone trying to bomb the parliament. 💀

avatar

Piran

2

I think the reason they celebrate is the plot ultimately failed though! :P

avatar

⁉️

2

If only it actually worked. 😔

My week was alright thanks, what about yours ?? :)

avatar

Piran

Very busy, but that also meant it was productive thankfully, haha.

I’m looking forward to seeing some firework displays tonight & one of my close friends got drinks tomorrow!

Have a good weekend. :)

K

Kiesling

3

You too. Why the fireworks in UK ??

avatar

afrog

1

in like the 1700s this dude tried to blow up the parliament because they had a different religion to him but the plot failed and every year we celebrate by burning a pile of wood and setting off fireworks lol, bad description but its called 'bonfire night' if you want to google it :)

Have a nice week too dear Piran!!!

You too, Dami. :)

Piran

On the 5th of November in 1605, there was a man called Guy Fawkes who attempted to blow up the Houses Of Parliament, but his plot failed, so we celebrate the anniversary of that by lighting bonfires & setting off fireworks. :)

avatar

Piran

1

You like both of those songs too? Awesome! :D

Piran

‘Dopamine’ is still my current EDM obsession, even if it’s probably not going back to #1 in my own charts sadly. :/

K

Kiesling

Katy Perry was an influential part of my 2010's :)

K

Oh, cool :)

"Dopamine" has been doping my mind over the whole wekend while doing house work... Just to release the mind of "Easy on me", "Cold Heart", "Levitating"... And the fact that ABBA isn't doing any well in the UK chats 😔

Piran, hi!! My week was full of work, 1st term partial exams at school (don't forget I'm a teacher)... But I had a high overdose of "Dopamine" in my stereo that kept me going through the weekend, despite the fact that is just #2 in your chart losing the top spot to 24/5 by Mimi Webb, which is also good... The rest of your chart is great, "Tell it to my heart" & "Where are you now" are gaining positions, I am glad for that... Only ine thing made me sad... No ABBA songs in any charts 😲

K

Kiesling

0

Isn't that Tayloe Swift ??

avatar

Piran

1

I don’t think more than a couple of ABBA songs will appear in my next chart sadly, since I found ‘Voyage’ to be a decent listen, but not enough for me to revisit sadly!

That being said, it could result in ‘Tell It To My Heart’ & ‘Where Are You Now’ climbing even further, possibly even coming close to the Top 10. :)

avatar

Piran

1

Same here! I think the title track has to be a personal favourite of mine though. :)

K

Kiesling

2

Nice :)
