my god, what a fantastic album. 😻

painting pictures was a great opener, rapstar and epidemic were awesome singles, clueless went hard, so real is a nice track, and i also really liked heart of a giant, black hearted and party lyfe.

but oh my lord, that closing track, canvas, left me in goosebumps. i absolutely loved the storytelling in that one and the passion in polo g’s flow. definitely a 10/10! 🔥

might be the 2nd best album of the year behind sour imo, if this doesn’t reach number 1 next week i predict a riot.

Really hope their success might signal a new era and perhaps even a rehabilitation of Eurovision. If the artist who wins next year gets similar success people might not see it as this thing to be avoided

He can. But he - and more crucially his managers/handlers - know that real rap in the vein of some of his past freestyles wouldn't touch the sides of the charts, whereas we can all see exactly what this style of pop-rap is managing as we saw with Body.

The Charts make me laugh.
You are aloud 3 songs in the charts, then Traitor has to fall out of the chart to allow Driver's License back into the chart so she doesn't have 4.
Now this week Driver's License falls from the chart to allow Traitor to re-enter the charts.
Something is not right here, the same thing happened when Ed Sheeran had 3 songs in the chart.

Were you a chart follower in 2017. Do you really want to go back to that divide mess? These rules were brought in for a reason.

The 3 song rule is definitely a good thing. I don't think ACR is that big an issue, the sales to streams ratio is what really needs fixing - as more people turn to streaming it needs to be closer to 1:1000 or 1:500 rather than 1:300 and 1:150 so that sales have more impact - going out and buying a track is a really big deal in this day and age. .

The three songs rule means that you don't get to see the true extent of how popular each track is on the album! The charts are meant to be all about the biggest songs of the week, so if most or all of the tracks on an entire album are doing more successfully that all other singles, then they should still be allowed to chart the highest!

Also, don't get me started on how many fake #1's it has given us over the past four years, like where Song A has been bought & streamed way less than Song B, but Song A still charts higher than Song B.

Sorry but it's a singles chart not an album tracks chart. 3 songs is the same amount as tracks that used to be released as singles, which is exactly why it was chosen.

The worst chart era of all time was the period where they had no cap on album tracks, and had the streaming ratio widely disproportionate to sales. It was utterly turgid, there's no excitement at all for chart fans, and no real assesment of artists success compared to one another if 20 of the top 40 belong to the same artist. It's nutty, and further squeezes rising stars out of the charts. Tbf, if you want to see how popular each track is, open the playcount tab on spotify. I don't see the need to ruin a decades old institution for that reason.

The ACR limit being removed, I could just about understand, but the alternative to it is songs dominating the chart for ridiculously long periods of time. But as said, I'd be far more on board with that being scrapped than the 3 song cap being removed//

Tbh, none of the No 1s of the streaming era are anywhere near as fake as the No 1s of the napster/early download era phase.

Again, the charts don't exist to tell us what music is the newest & freshest, they've always existed to tell what the most popular songs of the week are, even if they're months or even years old! It's incredibly biased knocking down older songs, like some of the modern classics or Christmas songs or when an older artist dies, to name just a few of many examples of where ACR & three songs rules further flaw the charts.

The three songs cap was brought it to prevent album tracks charting instead of singles, but instead, 'Traitor' (an unreleased song from 'Sour'), has now kicked out 'Drivers License' (an officially promoted lead single). Anyone who reads this chart without much knowledge of its rules is going to think that the latter isn't in the Top 100 most popular songs of the week, when it was actually in the Top 10!

As for streaming, that's here to stay whether we like it or not, since that's how almost everyone consumes music nowadays! It would make sense given how much cheaper & quicker is it to access your favourite songs, especially with the lockdowns that we've been in & out over the past month, because while buying a song does more to support the music industry. We sadly have to move on with the times & accept that everything is moving online now, hence the way that the charts are compiled also need to move along with it to reflect that! Besides, I think streaming accounts for like 85% of the music industry in the UK anyway.

For all of those reasons, if OCC are going to keep the ACR & three songs rules, then they need to drop the "official" part from the name, or alternatively, allow all officially released singles & any additional tracks inside the Top 20 to chart, only leaving the least consumed album tracks out of the chart!

Then you at least have a much more believable & reliable reflection of what everybody has been listening to each week. :)

Hi, it's cool if you prefer the British one over the French one. Personally, I like "Le Temps", "La Kiffance", "Allo" and most recently "Calabria" after jumping over 120 places in the space of 2 weeks and even "Sapapaya" :)

I was going to say Vera Lynn achieved that feat in the very first week of the chart, but alas it was 3 hits in the top 10 of a top 12 chart.

Napster era downloads (c.1999) were illegal and thus not eligible for the chart. Official legal downloads didn't start until 2003, even then took until 2005 to be counted at all and until 2007 to be allowed to chart without a physical counterpart.

Even in the physical era there are plenty of albums with 4, 5 or even more singles from them.

Yeah, EDM stands for "Electronic Dance Music"! Okay, they're not exactly the same thing, but they're used interchangeably nowadays. :)

I was chart follower in 1996 and did so avidely until the birth of the digital era and changes to the chart show 2005 meant I listened and paid attention less. It was the 2017 influx of record breaking chart action that sparked my interest again! (although I never entirely went away from my chart interest).

It's not a mess of the chart, it's a mess of the public taste. If they are genuinely the most popular songs of the week, they should be in the chart regardless. Having all album tracks on the top 20 reflected that. As James Masterton correctly predicted, people forget that Stormzy achieved the same feat in the top 100 only in the previous week, and Drake did the same the previous year. It was only a mess because it was genuinely so phenomenally more popular than everything else. Divide hasn't dropped out of the albums top 50 since - 224 weeks later, shows how genuinely popular it still is. If another album like Sour has similar potential, it should have no artificial restrictions curtailing it's chart impact.

On that basis, those early 2017 chart rules are preferable to today's. The change in rules was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to a very rare event. Most of the singles success would have been down to the album streams, and only 2 albums in the previous 60 years of chart history have sold more quickly than Divide should show just how rare such popularity is.

So many people complained about Ed's takeover in 2017, now they're still complaining about ACR & the three songs rules, so you're not going to please everybody, haha.

The OCC rules shouldn't ever have had to change because of one artist though, because it's not their fault that there was perhaps some lack of diversity in the charts after Ed's last album bomb, it's for the British public to listen to as many different artists & genres as possible (which they're thankfully doing a bit more now!). :P
