So, Wham has finally set a new chart record of taking 36 years to reach number one. Three years ago, and also (but not in the same year) Mariah set unwanted chart records by dropping from number two out of the 100 on the first chart of the New Year then when all the festive records dropped out.

This week Ladbaby has a big drop from one to 78, not a record by any means but a significant fall to say the least.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the current record holder of biggest drop from number one in a single week belongs to the Lightning Seeds with Three Lions when that tumbled down to 97 following England's defeat in the World Cup semi final during summer 2018.
No single in chart history has ever fallen from one out of the hundred in a single week. This Friday that will change when Wham sets that most unwanted chart record.
Also other chart records will be set, with the most number of dropouts out of the 100 in a single week as we kiss goodbye to all the festive records, a new record of re-entries will occur, the most number of singles in the top 10 to fall out of the 100 in a single week, with nine expected to go, you get the picture, I could go on but won't, so we all wait with baited breath for the new chart.

Happy New Year 2021 everyone. So nice to see Last Christmas made it to #1. It was there in my charts also ... on January 26, 1985 ... toppling That-Other-1984-Christmas-Song, finally ... :-)

I am so glad that Wham! have got to NO.1 after all these years again. It just goes to show how fantastic Wham! and pop was during the late 70's, 80's and early 90's. It was Britain's greatest pop era. Thank you Andrew and rest in peace George.

Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger
Oasis - Wonderwall
John Legend - All Of Me
Eminem & Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie
The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York

Where is "Boris Johnson is a F*cking C*nt"? It was number 5 in the Christmas chart, but not here? Plus, where you do list it, why is the record company name disguised? If you think it's offensive, many other offensive songs and offensive titles have appeared over the years. You have a duty to accurately report sales etc and not to allow personal intervention to distort the factual reporting and basic function of your charts. The song is no more stupid than someone singing about a sausage roll. There has been a conspiracy to hamper the progress of this track, by yourselves and the BBC who refused to play even the special clean version on The Chart Show. Truth and accuracy have been compromised.

avatar

Marta Haskell

0

It's gone becuase it was a song that no one liked and listened to like once. Plus it's not funny putting that rubbish in the middle of a top 40 chart that kid's read. It's pathetic.

It's shocking to see my favourite Xmas song reach #1 finallyšŸ˜, especially by beating my most-disliked AIWFCIYšŸ˜œ

3

Last Christmas now sets a new record of the longest time a song has taken to reach #1 after it was released, it has taken 36 years after being released in 1984. The previous record was Is This The Way To Amarillo? which which was released in 1971 and reached #1 34 years later in 2005.

KF

Karl Frost

2

Will next week be the first ever week where for 2 consecutive weeks the no. 1 has dropped out of the top 40 altogether? Shocked but happy that Last Xmas is number one, especially as almost the entire week was after xmas aswell.

4

WAIT WHAT??? I didnā€™t expect any Christmas songs, never mind Last Christmas finally getting to Number 1.

I have no idea what I want for Number 1 next week. The three contenders I see happening (Sweet Melody, Whoopty and Afterglow) all get a 2/10 or lower for me.

Also, why is Blinding Lights Number 1 on Spotify and Number 2 on Apple Music? šŸ¤Ø

Am I correct in thinking that LadBaby's 1 to 78 drop this week is the biggest EVER fall from Number One and thus sets a brand new record? Has a record EVER gone from Number One to completely out of the Top 100 ?

I beyond happy for Wham. I'm old enough to remember "Last Christmas", when it came out in 1984. I always thought, although raising money for famine relief is good, it also meant and deprived Wham of making the top slot, until NOW. Ladbaby is number 78 this week, having been the Christmas chart topper.

2020 mightā€™ve been a terrible year in general, but at least it gave us two surprise releases from Taylor & an incredible sophomore album from Dua! :D

P

I love Ellie too, but 'River' shouldn't have been #1 in the charts last year. :/

P

PN

3

It shouldn't have, true (how a song that was the true definition of a yo-yo song beat Mariah to number 1 is beyond me). Ellie deserved it (a lot), but Mariah deserved it A LOT more.
But least justice was served last year, and Ellie added another number 1 to her tally in the process :)

3

I'd love to see it happen but I don't think it ever will sadly unless AIWFCIY and Last Christmas end up on ACR bad and Fairytale of New York somehow manages to use that to its benefit. It's always the third in line so that'd be the most likely scenario it'd happen in

'Love Story' too! ;)

17

The biggest song never to reach #1 is now 'Moves Like Jagger' by Maroon 5 ft Christina Aguilera. :)

avatar

Cameron

3

That's never going to be #1 though lol

avatar

Piran

2

No, but it is in the Top 40 best-selling songs of all-time apparently! :O

avatar

Cameron

4

Yeah it was #2 for seven consecutive weeks and seven different songs kept it off #1 lol

avatar

Blank

3

Cool stat. Got to be a record for most records keeping a #2 off the top. There was an 8-week run but that was all behind Bryan Adams!

avatar

Cameron

4

I think the record is seven weeks for a #2 which has happened three times. There was I Swear by All-4-One in 1993 which spent seven consecutive weeks at #2 behind Love Is All Around by Wet Wet Wet. Then Moves Like Jagger spent seven consecutive weeks at #2 in 2011. Then most recently in 2018, These Days by Rudimental spent seven consecutive weeks at #2 behind God's Plan by Drake but it reached #1 after the seven weeks.

DAW

Dr. A.W.K. Ward

4

Right Said Freds 'I'm Too ' was kept from the #1 for 6 wks by Bryan Adams, then 3 years later 'I Swear' by All 4 One spent 7 weeks at #2 thanks to Wet Wet Wet. But no other #2 song has been kept off the top by so many different #1s as ' Moves Like Jagger' which is a cruel irony as some of those one-week #1s were really inferior, forgettable songs. Judge for yourselves....

Example - Stay Awake
Pixie Lott - All About Tonight
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
Dappy - No Regrets
Sak Noel - Loca People
Rihanna & Calvin Harris - We Found Love (2 wks)

Six different songs kept it from the UK #1, not 7. ;o)

avatar

Blank

3

I got some of it wrong. As you say, All For One at 7 weeks is the longest consecutive run. Frank Chackesfield (Limelight) had 8 weeks at #2 in 4 different runs - all behind Frankie Laine I Believe (which itself had different runs, both hits dropped from their peak at the same time!). As for the #1s keeping Jagger off, of the 5 I remember they are all pretty decent. Don't remember the Dappy one!

"Previously, Last Christmas was the UKā€™s best-selling single to never reach Number 1, accumulating 1.9 million pure sales to date across its lifetime. That title is now handed over to Maroon 5ā€™s Moves Like Jagger ft. Christina Aguilera (1.55m pure sales), a Number 2 hit in 2011."

2

I'd have said it was 'Moves Like Jagger', since that was a released as a separate single, unlike 'Everything She Wants' (which was only released in 1984 as a double A-side alongside 'Last Christmas').
